gong fm 57rter here in rk good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. new zealand's prime minister this morning announced the ban of military-style semiautomatic and automatic weapons just like the ones used in the mosque shootings that killed 50. two more funerals for the victims are being held today with a prayer service planned for there in christchurch. laura podesta is here in new york with more on the developments. good morning, laura. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. in stark contrast to u.s. lawmakers' response after one of our mass shootings, the new zealand situation is developing at lightning speed. it appears no one is pushing back against plans to change that country's gun laws in the wake of the tragedy. less than one week after the new zealand massacre that horrified minister announced immediate and sweeping gun law reforms.

>> the nation witnessed a terrorist attack that demonstrated the weakness of new zealand's gun laws. every semiautomatic weapon used in the terrorist attack on friday will be banned in this country. >> reporter: prime minister jacinda ardern said legislation is being drafted urgely. two shootings left 50 worshippers dead. >> the time for the mass and easy availability of these weapons must end. >> reporter: buyback programs will be created for people who already own the banned weapons, and gun sellers will be expected to return a wide range of products to suppliers. >> we will ban all high-capacity magazines. we will ban all parts with the ability to convert semiautomatic or any other type of firearm into a military-style semiautomatic weapon. >> reporter: ardern said the suspect bought his weapons legally with a standard license

and enhanced their firepower with what she called a simple online purchase. >> they had the power to shoot continuously, but they also had large-capacity magazines. >> reporter: ardern expects the new law to be in place by april 11th. an interim ban starts today to try to prevent stockpiling. ardern said certain exemptions to the weapons ban would be made for farmers to cull their herds, but these exemptions would be tightly regulated. anne-marie? >> laura podesta here in new york. thank you, laura. president trump is facing more criticism for his continued attacks against late arizona senator john mccain. mr. trump spoke out about the vietnam war p.o.w. at an army tank plant in ohio yesterday. and now more fellow republicans are speaking out against the president as his dispute with mccain grows more bitter. major garrett reports. i've never liked him much. hasn't been for me.

>> reporter: in ohio, president trump tried to explain the inexplicable -- a running feud with revered republican senator john mccain who has been dead for seven months. >> mccain didn't get the job done for our great vets. >> reporter: as if to justify the attacks that have rankled top republicans, mr. trump repeatedly faulted mccain on policy. >> the other thing is we're in a war in the middle east that mccain pushed so hard. when he finally had the chance to do it, he voted against repeal and replace. >> reporter: and this -- >> i gave him the kind of funeral that he wanted which as president i had to approve. i don't care about this, i didn't get thank you. >> reporter: mccain's daughter meghan, a co-host of "the view," said the attacks were bizarre. osidentasd think it was so jealous of him that he was dominating the news cycle in death, as well.

>> reporter: top senate republicans came to mccain's ac "nobody regardless of their position is above common decency." >> it was deplorable. it will be deplorable seven months from now if he says it again, and i will speak out. >> reporter: on twitter, mitch mcconnell called mccain a rare patriot and genuine american hero. and utah's mitt romney said he was "honorable, self-effacing, and self-sacrificing." mccain friend and trump confidante lindsey graham -- >> i think the president's comments about senator mccain hurt him more than they hurt the legacy of senator mccain. >> reporter: major garrett, cbs news, the white house. the fbi is now assisting in the criminal investigation into the certification of boeing's 737 max jets. the news comes as boeing's grounded max planes will likely be parked a little longer. european and canadian regulators want to review a change to a key

flight control system that's supposed to make the 737 max safer. this follows the lion air crash in indonesia last october and the ethiopian airlines crash earlier this month. both involved boeing's 737 max jets. and relatively dry weather in the next few days will help the flooded regions in the midwest. the historic flooding has killed at least four people. a fifth person is still missing. the u.s. army corps of engineers says 200 miles of levees are compromised in four states. nebraska's flooding damage is estimated to be $1.5 billion. snow melt from a late winter storm and heavy rainfall have raised river levels since last week. an arizona mother who operated a very popular youtube channel featuring her adopted kids is facing allegations of child abuse. the mom is behind bars, charged with a series of crimes. jamie yuccas reports. >> reporter: the videos are called "fantastic adventures,"

and they've been viewed more than 250 million times. according to police, the kids who performed in them lived in a house of horrors. the contrast is mind-boggling. >> whoa -- >> reporter: for youtube viewers, it seems so wholesome. behind the scenes, a mother was allegedly starving her seven adopted children. when police officers arrived, how did they describe the children? >> malnourished. they were extremely hungry. >> reporter: 48-year-old michelle hobson is charged with child abuse, unlawful imprisonment, child neglect, and molestation of a child. police say hobson's 19-year-old biological daughter tipped them off. >> one of the female victims in this matter was pepper sprayed in her vagina. >> reporter: that sounds horrific. >> it is. >> reporter: all the alleged attacks occurred inside this home. this video, "escaping the babysitter" may have been art imitating life. >> we've got to get out of here.

>> they were made to stay in a locked closet for days on end, not receiving water, not receiving food, having to wear adult-style diapers. it's heartbreaking. >> reporter: it's estimated hobson may have earned $2.5 million from the videos. google owns youtube and initially said it would not remove them unless hobson pled guilty or was convicted. they were taken down. jamie yuccas, cbs news, los angeles. new england patriots owner robert kraft will reportedly reject a plea deal in his prostitution case according to cbs boston station wbz. his attorney asked a judge to prevent police from releasing the undercover surveillance video that allegedly shows kraft twice exchanging money for sex at a spa in florida. the former owner of the spa commented yesterday on her involvement in the scandal. >> have you ever engaged in any activities which involve prostitution or human

so first of all, want to let you know, no one was hurt when the snow beneath some skiers gave way and they slid down a mountain. the avalanche was caught on camera in the austrian alps last week. they had planned to ski down one at a time, but their weight set off the slide. no one was buried. dramatic, though. harvard is being sued over slave photos, and kentucky's governor makes a shocking admission. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the louisville courier journal" reports that kentucky's governor exposed his nine children to chickenpox on purpose. republican governor matt bevin defended his actions saying the vaccine is not for everyone, and the government should not force it upon people. this comes as a northern kentucky student sued the health department after he was banned from playing basketball because he's not vaccinated. jerome kunkel says the vaccine goes against his religious beliefs. >> it's derived from aborted fetal cells.

as a catholic, we do not believe in abortion. we believe it's morally wrong, and it would go against my conscience. >> the cdc urges parents not to expose their kids to chickenpox on purpose because it can lead to severe complications and possible death. the "wall street journal" reports that british prime minister theresa may has requested a three-month brexit delay. britain is scheduled to leave the european union in eight days, but may does not have the votes for a deal. the european union will grant the extension only if may can win parliament's approval for her twice-rejected brexit deal. if lawmakers shoot down her deal again next week, may could face a choice between a no-deal brexit or asking the e.u. to delay the departure date until june 30th. "the new york times" reports an italian school bus driver took 51 seventh graders hostage before setting the school bus on fire outside of milan. the children were safely rescued. the driver was reportedly angry about migrant deaths in the mediterranean.

students say he poured gasoline down the aisle of the bus. someone on the bus was able to call for help, and police rescued everyone before the bus burst into flames. the "boston globe" reports harvard university is being sued over its use of slave photographs. the lawsuit surrounds an image of a man named renty and his daughter taken in 1850 while renty was enslaved in south carolina. it was used in a racist study by a harvard biologist. renty's great, great, great granddaughter says harvard makes money with the photograph that should belong to the family. her lawyer spoke yesterday. >> harvard is saying to tammy lanier and her family that renty still is a slave. he still does not own his image. >> lanier wants harvard to turn the photos over and cease to damas. checkou powerball tickets.

march madness is killing productivity at the office. and a huge lottery jackpot is up for grabs. diane king hall is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, diane. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. we begin with the latest news from the federal reserve. the fed has decided not to raise interest rates with chairman jerome powell suggesting the central bank will likely leave its benchmark lending rate unchanged for months. and there are two big consumer names to watch today. nike and levi, for different reasons. nike will report third-quarter results. and after 34 years as a private company, iconic denim maker levi strauss goes public again today. the brand has priced shares at $17 apiece for a valuation of roughly $6.6 billion. here on wall street, stocks finished mixed. the dow tumbled 141 points yesterday. the s&p 500 lost eight, while the nasdaq rose five. apple has announced the second generation of the world's most popular wireless headphones.

the new airpods will have faster connect times and more talk time. the new model also allows user to say, "hey, siri," instead of attaching the side to access siri. they also support wireless charging with a new wireless charging case. as march madness heats up, many employees are jumping into office pools. in a recent survey, office workers admitted spending an average of 25 minutes during the workday watching games and filling out brackets. analysts say that adds up to an estimated $13 billion in lost productivity. 84% of workers, however, argue office pools make their jobs more fun. the average amount of money contributed to an office pool is about $22. you have until the first game to get your bracket in. that game tips off at 12:15 here on cbs. and the largest powerball jackpot of the year is now worth $625 million. for the 24th time in a row, no one hit the winning numbers on
