>> we begin on the storm watch, high def doppler tracking the rain right now. and here is a live look outside from our sales force tower camera. >> the roads are slippery. some starting to dry out here. it's a live look along the embarcadaro. >> the camera lens was all wet as it flew overhead. >> darren is tracking that rain. >> the keyword was east. that's where most of the rain is now. if you take a look over my shoulder, you can pick out a pattern here. the bulk of the rain has now moved east of most of the bay area. that's not to say it's done completely. look at santa rosa. santa rosa has been the center of action here for most of the morning. we picked up .6 of rain up here. the rain is still coming down along that 101 corridor. if we hop over to napa, you can see a few showers are scattered

around. the mountains that surround the valley. other than that, the rest of the bay area is starting to dry out. a few showers in the south bay. if we take it from where it is there and i put this into a forecast that kind of helps give us a snapshot on what to expect from the rain, we're looking back now. you can see how from 7:00 a.m., 9:00 a.m., and 11:00 a.m., that's when the best of the rain came through. look forward to the 6:00 time frame. our chances for rain are about to go way down. meaning we're about to get a break, guys, for most of us. not done completely. still a few showers to talk about for late tonight and early saturday morning. and i'll go over that in more -- details in a few minutes. for now, michelle, back over to you. >> a big rig overturns on northbound 101, slides down an embankment, and causes a traffic backup that lasted for hours this morning. two lanes just reopened, but two are still closed at this hour. it was reported just before 9:00 on northbound 101 between

spencer avenue and the robin williams tunnels. jackie ward tells us how the driver escaped, essentially unscathed. >> this is the scene mill valley fire pulled up to. a good will tractor trailer on its side down an embankment and on fire. >> according to the driver, he was driving northbound on 101 and it felt like he hit black ice and lost control of the back end of the truck. >> this happened at 8:40 this morning, just south of the spencer avenue exit. >> we have accidents in this particular area of 101. >> amazingly, the driver walked away with minor injuries. only a few scratches he got using a fire extinguisher to break a window so he could crawl out. >> the stars were in alignment for him, including, since we had a fire, we got rain all day long today. if this was in september, october, this could have been a different scenario. >> traffic was brutal. it tooks us an hour to travel a little more than six miles. these wet road conditions are

why firefighters are telling drivers to still take it slow when you can. in marin county. >> in santa rosa, 140 people are displaced after a fire burned this apartment complex. that fire broke out just before 7:00 last night on steel lane. firefighters described a chaotic scene. >> upon our arrival, once firefighters got here, we had multiple reports of possible people trapped. firefighters saw people on balconies, on top of carports. reports of people jumping from windows. the fact that a fire of this size with this many people that were home at the time, this amount of fire. the fact we had four injuries, none required transportation to the hospital is incredible. >> officials say all 64 units in the complex are now uninhabitable. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. president trump touched down in california just about 20 minutes ago. here is a look at el centro.

air force one touched down at the naval air facility and the next stop for the president is a portion of the existing border wall has been remodeled. the president making a rare visit for a renewed push on border security. pivotal campaign issue as he looks to be elected for a second time. that comes after he retracted his threat to immediately close the southern border with mexico. yesterday, president trump gave mexico one year to limit illegal immigrants and drugs crossing the southern border. now the president is saying mexican authorities are stopping u.s. bound caravans after he threatened that immediate closure. >> i never changed my mind at all. i may shut it down at some point. i would rather do tariffs. so mexico, i have to say, has been very, very good. over the last four days since i talked about shutting down the border. >> tonight, the president attends a fundraiser in los

angeles and spend the night in las vegas. we have much more on the president's california visit, and a live report from calexico on the news at 5:00. javier announced he has filed for a preliminary injunction challenging president trump's national emergency decloration to fund a border wall. >> our democracy is successful because our branches of government are coequal. and that is why it is so important for us to stand up and say no. >> he made those remarks hours ago in sacramento. he is leading 20 other states, challenging the president's emergency decloration. he added the diversion of funds is unconstitutional and otherwise unlawful. chances of a rain delay at today's giants opener seem to be letting up. showers may still greet fans in the stands. live at oracle park. still have to get used to that. where the giants will play the tampa bay rays around 1:30.

collapse this afternoon. crews tell us a vacant building caught fire before midnight last night in downtown sasoon city. the flames spread to a nearby building. fortunately, no one was hurt. the cause of the fire is under investigation. we are learning new details about the criminal history of a man who allegedly claimed to be timmothy pitzen. an illinois boy who disappeared nearly eight years ago. the man is brian and he claimed to be a juvenile is extrafficking victim twice before. now he is being charged with making false statements to authorities. prosecutors say that he learned about the pitzen case from an episode of 20/20. he could now face up to eight years in prison. a search for a california woman kidnapped while on an african safari this week in uganda has intensified. authorities say the gunman abducted kimberly of costa mesa and her driver inside queen elizabeth national park on tuesday.

then they used the victim's cell phone to demand half a million dollars in ransom. officials say negotiations are underway. new at noon, in his first public appearance, a number of women said they felt uncomfortable around him in the past. today, former vice president joe biden quipped about the controversy, twice. >> just want you to know i had permission to hug lani. by the way, he gave me permission to touch him. >> biden hugged the union president of the international brotherhood of electrical workerses workers. the remarks had cheers. experts speculate, he may submit a bid for the presidency. hey darren. >> good morning, michelle. i've been taking a look at the different cameras we have scattered across the bay. we'll get a good idea of what

it looks like out there now. the bulk of the action has passed and moved off to our east. the first thing we're going to do is look at the scene here, you can tell we are not completely done here. that is an ominous looking sky with plenty of gray clouds. the real action, as far as anything falling from those clouds, you have to go east. and we'll go across the bay and check in on the camera that looks in on oakland and from that vantage point, we're not seeing rain here either. but if you go a little bit further east than that, we are. the rain fall totals have been impressive. look at the number in santa rosa. look at kent field, we picked up .75 inches of rain. we all got it. you can see a tenth to two tenths of an inch of rain scattered throughout the bay area. this is now high def doppler live. i'll stop it on the last frame. the bulk of the rain over here. we're getting a break.

there are still showers sitting off the coast. check in on places like santa rosa. we're still seeing some rain. in fact, this is calistoga. we're on the north side of napa valley. we have rain here working through the valley. as we come down to the south, the stuff we're seeing down here for the south bay, that's the radar getting over zealous. we're not seeing much rain falling down here. perhaps a few light showers. let's take it from where we are, clearly, the bulk of the rain is over here and we're done. if we go into the future cast, we'll see a few more showers get in here. a few spotty showers. it's great news. they took the tarp off the field at oracle. but there's the possibility we could see a few stray showers come through. depending on what your commute looks like, by the time we get to 4:00, 5:00, things are quiet. this gets us to 7:00. things really started to quiet down for us. and we're done. if we look at the bigger picture, i'm going to bring in the next band of rain for early

tomorrow. you see how it says saturday at 6:00 a.m.? this is an impulsive energy that comes through early on saturday, a few more spotty showers. we keep the clouds around on saturday as well. and then that's it, we're done. sunday, there is no rain in the forecast. as we look at the seven-day forecast, sunday we'll see inland locations make it into the mid 70s. then we get another weak little thing that gives us perhaps a shower or two on monday. no big deal on that rain. you would not be a major event at all. after that, we're done. plenty of sunshine shows up by the time we get to tuesday and wednesday. and into thursday and i know it's always just going to bring a little bit of joy to the room. after that, we're done. >> but are we done? >> do you promise? >> for the second half of next week, yes. >> yeah, okay. >> after that, the way this winter and spring has gone, we'll have to play that one as it comes. >> it's been a roller coaster. >> it has been. so far, at least today has fit right in with that. >> all right, darren, thanks

students. >> that's a really pretty campus. >> they are making plans, like all friends do. >> we talk about homework, lifestyle, about some of the things that i do in school. >> sharing life's highs and lows is a weekly adventure, and charlotte who is going to be graduating from berkeley soon. both are part of the student mentor project, or tsmp. a mentorship program that pairs underserved young people with cal students. >> a mentor is really somebody they need at this point to stay on track. >> tsmp's founder says need combined with simple economics inspired him. he offered $6,000 in scholarship money to cal students in exchange for their three-year commitment. >> these classes might be a little bit harder. >> the college mentor agrees to help a middle schooler by spending 1 to 2 hours every week together for three years. >> the first year is low, the

middle year is middle. and the third year, senior year is the bigger amount, so they'll stick with it. >> the businessman works with other established mentor programs to select the students. funding is private and he runs the organization himself. so he's able to put 98% of donations directly into the program. >> i've had nobody want to walk away. once they meet their mentee, it becomes important to them. >> their official mentorship will come to an end. but a lifelong friendship is just beginning. >> she is so funny and she is so wise and every time i come here, it's a breath of fresh air. >> i love seeing what's happening with this program. >> for providing mentorship opportunities for middle schoolers and scholarship money for college students, this week's jefferson award in the bay area goes to bill godwin. allen martin, kpix5. >> we're looking for more nominations. you can nominate your own local hero for a jefferson award
