and a new sps. scientists uncover our long lost cousin in a cath philippines, but they apparently look more like hobbits than humans. good morning from cbs news at 57 studio in headquarters in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. a powerful storm is pounding much of the u.s. this morning with more than 17 million people expecting to see snow. parts of minnesota are already seeing blizzards and winds. officials in that state reported more than 200 car accidents yesterday. laura podesta is here in new york with look at areas that have been hardest hit by this weather. good morning, laura. >> good morning, anne-marie. search "bomb cyclone" on twitter and you'll see people prepping for and, let's be honest, complaining about this weather event. we're not going to see the full

extent of the damage until the sun's up, but we know it's caused shutdowns and hundreds of accidents. a springtime blizzard is blanketing part of the midwest. >> typical wisconsin weather. we get our normal spring snowfall. >> but this is the second event in the last month and it's causing major problems from wisconsin to colorado. >> this could be life-threatening. we want people to be safe and heed the warnings. >> a ups driver walked away after his truck careened off a bridge on interstate 70 in kansas last night. colorado shut down major highways due to slick conditions, but not before several car crashes that backed up traffic for miles. about half the flights at denver international airport were canceled. >> if you were to ask me if the denver errant was open, i would have probably said no. >> being stuck overnight could not dampen the spirits of jordan and sarah.

>> we got engaged. >> after an unforgettable trip to the rockies, they hope to get home today. the colorado rockies postponed their game against the atlanta braves. the minnesota twins wished they could have done the same. they were in new york losing to the mets. down south it was all fun and games yesterday ahead of the masters in augusta, georgia, but rain from this storm system is expected to disrupt play at one of golf's premier tournaments this weekend. and many areas in the midwestern states are still getting over massive flooding after snow melted away from the first bomb cyclone on march 13th. the hope this time around is the ground will soak in more of that runoff, keeping rivers from cresting. anne-marie? >> laura podesta here in new york. thank you, laura. well, some parts of the midwest are expected to get more than 2 feet of snow by the end of the week.

chief meteorologist drew burgoyne of our milwaukee affiliate wtjt tells us where that will happen. >> the dakotas are going to get hammered today with very heavy snowfall and then you combine that with wind gusts today between 40 and 50 miles an hour, and it's going to be an absolute mess from north platte to sioux falls to minneapolis. they will continue to see that snowfall from the afternoon into the evening. the storm is so charged it's pulling in a lot of warm air and unstable air that we will see likely strong storms and thunderstorms throughout illinois and indiana on the eastern side of our storm season, and the snow will continue late tonight into friday morning especially throughout the dakotas with those winds very, very strong. all right. what about snowfall totals for this major event?

15 to 25 inches of snow. a good swath of western parts of minnesota to about north platte, nebraska. a lot going on with that storm system. it's going to be very warm and humid especially on the border of indiana and illinois. some strong to severe thunderstorms could fire this afternoon. no doubt about it, high temperatures today. strong to severe thunderstorms. 70s to 80s from st. louis to louisville, memphis, 81. on the backside of that storm, temps will only be in the 20s with some of those wind gusts to over 50 miles an hour. i'm meteorologist drew burgoyne for cbs news. today we're expected to hear more about the suspect in a series of church fires in louisiana. 21-year-old holden matthews was arrested in landry parish late yesterday. three churches have been destroyed by fire over the past ten days. all the churches have mostly black congregations, raising suspicions that the fires could be racially motivated.

the congregation is not shaken. >> we have learned because of our great belief in god, if we fear god, we have no need to fear anyone else. >> matthews is the son of a deputy and authorities say it was his father who turned him in. investigators are looking into what started as a gas leak in north carolina. >> blew the windows open. part of our ceiling started coming down. >> i'm saw just the fireball where the cafe used to be. >> firefighters in downtown durham were evacuating people from the area when the explosion asd art. yesterday morning. several others were damaged. some described the explosion as feeling like an earthquake. a 61-year-old coffee shop owner was killed. 17 others were hurt.

attorney general william barr said he believed there were spice. barr made comments during the hearing yesterday. barr wants to examine how the russia investigation began but democrats called him irresponsible. >> i'm not saying improper surveillance occurred. i'm saying i'm concerned about it and looking into it. >> he is an attorney general of the united states of america, not the attorney general of donald trump. >> democrats accuse barr of trying to undermine the mueller report, which barr is expected to release next week with some redactions. scientists have revealed the first image ever of a black hole. astroners gathered images around it. it looks like an eye.

craig say he's expected to be indicted on charges stemming from robert mueller's investigation. craig could be indicted as early as today for making false stands to the justice department looking into activities by foreign agents. the charges pertain to work he did for ukraine in 2012. craig's lawyers insist he's not guilty. a justice department's spokesman did not comment. "the courior-journal" reports that kentucky is the first state to use rapid dna. the state is taking part in a pilot program of the new technology. authorities say it will help with a backlog of dna test kits and encourage victims to come forward. the kentucky governor says this gives kentucky another way to identify suspects. >> i'm going to put sexual predators on notice today, if you're a sexual predator in the state of kentucky, we're going to come after you, and we now have new equipment to come after you.

>> kentucky governor matt bevin says he intends to include funding for the new technology in his state budge for next year. cbsnews.com reports georgetown students are voting today on a proposed student fee. it will be a rep perspiration measure. if the measure passes and is implemented, georgetown would be the first major institution in the nation with thereparations policy. undergraduate students would have to pay a $27.20 fee once a semester. faculty, staff, and graduate students would not have to pay the fee. the vote is not binding, and the school is not required to follow through. and "usa today" reports scientists have discovered an ancient long lost relative of our own species. several fossils, teeth, and bone

david pecker saud the company is more focused on celebrities and active lifestyle brands, which includes "men's journal" and "us weekly." meanwhile facebook is rolling out several new features to combat the spread of false and harmful information. additions include a new section on standards media pages so people know what is and isn't allowed on the site. it's also expanding its fact-checking programs. and american trust and the media has declined since last year. that's according to a new survey from morning consult and "the hollywood reporter." the survey asks whether they believe leading broadcasters are credible. cbs was perceived as credible by a high percentage of adults. abc was found to be the most credible by democrats while the fox news was the most credible among republicans. anne-marie.
