live from the bay area studios this is kpix5 news. a pothole on the runway leaving planes stranded. the major cleanup underway. good afternoon i'm michelle griego. >> and i'm anne makovec in for kenny choi. this is leading to dozens of flight delays. one runwayreopened a moment ago but the other is still closed. jackie ward talked to the

travelers. we will have her report coming up. a massive cleanup underway on southbound 880. chopper 5 over the scene. a crane toppled over and spilled fluid across several lanes. crews are on the scene trying to cover up the mess. three lanes on the right are blocked off and it looks like the crane is upright. this mess is causing a huge traffic nightmare. you can see the backup. no word on when those lanes will clear up again. today police in richmond shot a man armed with a knife. the suspect was a father accused of trying to stop his own family. it happened early this morning. police responded just after 2:30 am on a me on call. the caller said their father a window of the home to enter. the house does has some damage

including window that appears broken. the officers confronted the suspect in the backyard and ended up shooting and killing him after police say he refused their demands. police say a woman and a boy suffered cuts. family is recovering in the hospital. investigators are trying to figure out a motive for the attack. live outside right now, a windy afternoon on tap around the bay area. taking a look at the cloudy, gray skies. mary lee has a look at the forecast. >> a wind advisory is in effect for the coastline as well as the san francisco peninsula due back to the strong wind continuing through the afternoon. wind up to 45 miles an hour possible along and near the coastline. that is in effect until 8 pm, that wind advisory. 26 mile an hour wind and half- moon bay. downtown san francisco 25 mile an hour wind. 20 right now in berkeley and 17 for santa rosa.

the wind gusts going through the afternoon will pick up even more. i will let you know when the wind will decrease and the timing coming up. taking a live look at the staples center where thousands are gathered to pay tribute to the slain rapper, nipsey hussle. he was fatally shot march 31. he is being laid to rest today and the memorial service will be followed by a 25-mile funeral procession including a pass by his store in south los angeles and the scene of the crime. a gang member, eric holder, has been charged with his murder. police say he was shot over a personal dispute. in the wake of the devastating wildfires homeowners could see the pg&e billy is found liable for another major wildfires.

we spoke with the expert behind the menu. >> the money has to come out somewhere. >> reporter: this lecturer has a grim warning about the financial impact of future wildfires on the pg&e customers. if the devastating fires persist, the mimosas, pg&e customers consent and footing the bill and rates could skyrocket 50% on average the first year alone. he said it's simple math. >> if neda iranpour , pg&e collects $13 billion a year in revenue and could potentially face as much as $15 billion in liabilities, from the fire, there is obviously not going to be a lot of room within the existing revenue to pay that off and still provide service. >> reporter: he is advising the governor's office and said rising electricity costs could have a ripple effect across

how they wanted to kick off the weekend. >> i tried to rebook another flight. it took an hour and a half. they were rebooking. i finally got mine. >> reporter: now like hundreds of others they are waiting. >> i got it rescheduled to 10 and now it is delayed until 1145. that's not too bad. >> they booked my flight but it was delayed until 6:15. >> we are laying a new section of asphalt that takes a while to cure. the public permission officer for sfo sent a pothole on runway 28 is causing delays. this pothole means that two of the four runways had to be closed. these delays are similar to those that have to occur on a bad weather day. >> this is a heavily trafficked area. more than two thirds of all the

weather. it is windy, though. >> that's right. nothing compared to the rest of the country but we are dealing with wendy conditions along the coast which is why a wind advisory is in effect for the bay area coastline as well as the san francisco peninsula. you can see the breakers on the beach camera now. temperatures are in the upper 50s to low 60s. here is the wind advisory in effect for the coastline and the peninsula. gusts up to 45 miles an hour. looking at the wind increasing heading through the afternoon. the satellite and radar view with the ridge of high pressure shifting to the west. you can see the clouds going over the ridge into the bay area. this is a weak weather system bringing in the clouds and kicking of the wind. on future cast looking at mostly cloudy skies heading through tomorrow. if you want more sunshine you will have it on friday and saturday. the future cast wind gusts show

>> reporter: after the fires in 2017, -- a lot of the chefs said how can we help? sharon irwin took charge and rounded up some of the top chefs and whipped up nutritious meals for displaced families to pick up. >> they wanted comfort. they wanted something to make them feel good.>>reporter: sonoma family meal was born. it served meals to survivors of the fire like dorothy hughes. >> they probably saved my life. reporter: dorothy had just lost her husband and dog when the fire left her trailer uninhabitable. this volunteer said she united a caring community. >> this idea was brilliant.>>reporter: months after the fires the need was there so the volunteers continued to feed the families. >> any of the families have moved up to four times and they are still in temporary housing.
