plus chicago sues jussie smollett. the city now wants three times the amount it originally demanded for an alleged hate crimes hoax. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. wikileaks founder julian assange now faces a single u.s. federal conspiracy charge related to one of the largest ever leaks of government secrets. the justice department says assange conspired to hack into a pentagon computer. they wa the u.s. wants to extradite him, but assange is vowing to fight it. ian lee reports. >> reporter: he was disheveled and shouting out of an ecuadorian embassy in london. it ended his nearly seven-year

stay. an unsealed u.s. justice department indictment charges assange with conspiring to hack a computer with analyst chelsea manning. >> i think julian assange has to face justice here. justice needs to be pursued quickly and effectively. >> reporter: he made an initial court appearance in london thursday. the judge blasted assange, he called him a narcissist who couldn't get beyond his own selfish interest. the case stems from the release of a trove of secret documents in 2010. his lawyer defended his right as a publisher. >> this precedent means that any journalist can be extradited for prosecution in the united states for having published truthful information about the united states. >> reporter: the u.s. set its p sights again on assange after emails allegedly stolen by russian hackers from computers during the 2016 presidential

campaign. assange has not been charged in connection with that. president trump had little to say about assange's arrest. >> i know nothing about wikileaks. it's not my thing. i know there is something having to do with julian assange. >> reporter: a far cry from the campaign in 2016. >> wikileaks. i love wikileaks. >> it's amazing what's come out of wikileaks. >> reporter: if convicted, assange can face up to five years on a single conspiracy charge. ian lee, cbs news, london. a powerful spring blizzard that's crippling parts of the plains and upper midwest has turned deadly. it's so dangerous drivers are being warned to stay home. many roads are covered with snow, ice, or slush, making travel treacherous. at the denver international airport, an airline mechanic was killed in a crash with a snow plow wednesday. the blizzard is weakening but not before dumping record snowfall in some places. laura podesta is here in new york with more on this wicked weather. laura, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie.

this storm has swept over six states. while the snowfall has calmed down in colorado, kansas, and nebraska, the storm is still lingering this morning over the dakotas and minnesota. midwesterners are doing their best to keep up with the sprawling spring blizzard. >> we just put a band aid here and a band-aid there and keep working it. >> i guess i didn't think we were going to get this much in april. >> reporter: thundersnow in wisconsin, and minnesota highlighted the storm's unusual strength. >> kind of weird when it's snowing. >> reporter: daily snowfall records were made throughout the region. >> 74 degrees earlier this week was much more enjoyable than this. >> reporter: more than 2 feet of

snow blanketed parts of south dakota. >> wow. >> reporter: but ice and wind caused the most damage, knocking out power lines faster than workers could repair them. >> they've been busy. as soon as you get something fixed, something else pops up. >> reporter: just over the border this icy road was too much for one state trooper. further north art's dairy freeze is still standing. >> our motto is it's never too cold for ice cream. >> reporter: they'll be serving ice cream today for whoever wants it. the forecast is calling for a high temperature of just 32 degrees. and elsewhere in the country, texas, louisiana, and arkansas are in line for a possible severe weather this weekend including damaging winds, hail, and even the potential for tornados. anne-marie. >> oh, man. laura podesta here in new york. thank you. >> it doesn't end. >> no, it does not. all right. well, that severe weather forecast in the south is expected to arrive as early as tomorrow. chief meteorologist drew burgoyne of our milwaukee

station wdjt is tracking that troublesome system. >> hi. i'm meteorologist drew burgoyne. the spring storm system continues to ramp up, and notice south dakota over the last 24 to 36 hours just getting pounded with the heaviest snow. here's some of the snowfall reports. several areas with 2 feet of snow across portions of south dakota. thankfully it looks like this system at least when it comes to snowfall will weaken on friday. it will continue to cause some issues throughout northern parts of minnesota. on the eastern side of our storm, some scattered showers even some rumbles of thunder heading toward the east coast, and then all eyes are going to be on this weekend, especially saturday. could see some decent severe weather break out throughout the mid south as showers and thunderstorms are expected throughout texas, louisiana, and arkansas. we'll have to watch for severe weather there. what about your high temperatures for friday? some spots really nice. 76 in charlotte, 81 in

jacksonville, new york, about 56. d.c. at 67, chicago close to 50 as well as milwaukee. minneapolis trying to warm close to 40 degrees. cooler in cheyenne at 36. salt lake city at 42 with los angeles at 70 degrees. have a great weekend coming up. i'm meteorologist drew burgoyne, cbs news. well, the city of chicago is suing actor jussie smollett. the lawsuit filed yesterday seeks to recoup money spent to investigate his claim of a racist and homophobic attack in january. the city had demanded $130,000, but a city code allows the city to seek three times that amount, $390,000. smollett maintains he was attacked. last month prosecutors dropped all criminalha smollett's lawyer has said smollett will not be intimidated into paying the demanded sum. grammy nominated rapper nipsey hussle will be laid to rest today during a private burial service in los angeles.

of its boosters back on earth. the falcon blasted off from any.tionse fosed ter yesterday two of the boosters landed side by side back at cape canaveral, which had been done before, but for the first time the third one also landed safely on an ocean platform hundreds of miles offshore. during the falcon's first launch last year, the third rocket missed its target. there are new criminal charges against lawyer michael avenatti rng and a report of a controversial plan for immigrants. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. the "washington post" reports the white house tried to pressure u.s. immigration authorities to release immigrant detainees onto the streets of sanctuary cities to retaliate against political foes. the "post" spoke to unnamed department of homeland security officials and reviewed emails. the trump administration reportedly proposed transporting

detainees to nancy pelosi's san francisco district twice in the past six months. the id. ite says t proposal is no longer under consideration. "the new york times" reports attorney michael avenatti was indicted on three dozen more federal charges. prosecutors say avenatti stole millions of dollars from five clients, cheated on his taxes, lied to the irs, and committed other financial crimes. in one case, avenatti's accused of stealing most of a $4 million settlement owed to a paraplegic man, leaving him destitute. he used it for his personal use including a private jet. avenatti denies the allegations. the airlines said in legal documents that its large 737s were not suitable for certain airports. boeing said that the planes cannot be used at high elevation airports that require longer runways and faster takeoff speeds.

let's start with this. amazon is under fire after reports that thousands of its employees are possibly listening when you talk to alexa. according to bloomberg, amazon's emplees, a globa teahat ndema ae software. the company says this helps alexa better understand human speech in response to commands. the company claims it takes customers' personal information seriously. people can opt out of the feature in the privacy settings section of the alexa app. it's a big day for big banks. jpmorgan chase, wells fargo, and pnc financial will release their quarterly reports today. meantime stocks closed mostly lower yesterday during the earning season. the stocks fell 14 points, the s&p 500 was flat, and the nasdaq lost 16 points. there are new details about uber's highly anticipated ipo. the company will list here on the new york stock exchange
