president trump ramps up his attacks. measles outbreak. there's a spike in the number of cases of the potentially deadly virus. ♪ good morning from the studio 57 news room at c headquarters here in new york, good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we will rebuild. that is the promise from french president macron following the devastating fire at notre dame cathedral in paris. the world watched as the flames engulfed the piece of history. the spire of the landmark fell over as the fire spread and destroyed the church's roof. the cathedral landmark's bell towers have been saved. we are in london with more. good morning. >> good morning. it's heart breaking to see those pictures. paris firefighters say the blaze is fully extinguished, but it

took nine hours to get it under control. they were able to salvage the facade. they are treating this as an accident as they try to rise from the ashes. the cross inside the cathedral of notre dame is still standing even after a fire ripped through the centuries old building. the iconic spire fell victim to the flames. >> the spire started bending. we could not believe what we were seeing. the flames went on and on and on. >> reporter: most of the roof is destroyed. officials say the cathedrals outer walls and two bell towers were salvaged. 400 firefighters battled to save the building. they were still spraying water this morning. >> not just a building. it's the beating heart of paris. like an open heart on the medical table. it's heart breaking. >> reporter: the mayor of paris

posted to tweeter the crown of thorns and other artifacts were saved. it's believed the crown was worn by christ before the crucifix. they gathered to pray and sing hymns. the french president, macron, promised to rebuild notre dame. >> they scanned the building and can make a virtual model that is very accurate. of course, it would be a copy, not the same thing. >> reporter: the church, built in the 12th century was undergoing renovations to shore up the crumbling structure. the fund raising has already begun to rebuild. two french billionaires pledged $340 million. the french heritage society is appealing to donors and dozens of gofundme crowd sourcing campaigns have started. >> thank you so much. notre dame wasn't just a

cultural icon, it was a symbol of faith to people around the world. 13 million visitors walked through the cathedral each year. that that's 30,000 visitors each day. more than 50,000 people entered the church on important days. laura podesta has a look at the halls. >> notre dame is an international treasure. it's an example of gothic architecture and one of the most photographed sites in paris. the cathedral has been through a lot. it survived vandalism in the 1500s. it was converted to a starrage warehouse for food during the french revolution. now, it will be rebuilt after a massive fire. notre dame or our lady is considered the most famous gothic cathedral ever built. construction began on the historic monument in 1163 during the reign of king louie. it took nearly 200 years to

complete. the picturesque stain glassed windows made of hundreds of panes, depicting various images like apostles and angels. gargoyles and statues surround it. >> tremendous cultural and political significance. this is where kings and emperors were crowned and where saints are made. >> reporter: the cathedral spire was currently undergoing renovations. the last makeover was more than 150 years ago, inspired by the depiction of the decaying state in the novel, "the hunchback of notre dame." a book that inspired famous film versions, most notely in 1939 and disney's take in 1996. notre dame is home to the crown of thorns, considered paris' crown jewel. it is believed the crown was worn by christ before the

crucifixion. the bells have tolled for significant occasions for centuries and marked moments of tragedy, including the paris terror attack in 2015. preservation experts say there are no longer trees big enough in france to rebuild parts of the roof, including the beams. there's speculation about whether the new construction of the spire will be an exact replica or a contemporary version. >> laura podesta here in new york, thank you so much. moving on to news here, the justice department is preparing to release a redacted version of the special counsel's report on russian election interference on thursday. that's not stopping president trump's criticism of the probe. the president stepped up attacks yesterday in a series of tweets. he repeated his view that the report exonerated him and the investigation should never have happened. the findings from the nearly two

year probe are expected to be sent to congress and made available to the public. the trump administration is discussing ways to increase pressure on countries with high numbers of citizens who overstay their visa's in the u.s. it's part of the growing focus on immigration heading into the re-election campaign. mr. trump spoke about immigration and border control during a visit to minnesota yesterday. >> who do you think these countries are giving us? they are not giving us their finest, that i can tell you. it's insane. >> discussions include president trump's threat to shut down the southern border and, again, consideration of separating children from parents. the administration has also been weighing, targeting remittance payments of people living in the country illegally. bill wells kicks off two days of presidential campaigning. wells officially entered the race becoming the first republican to challenge

president trump in the 2020 race. he served two terms as governor of massachusetts in the '90s. in 2016, he was the vice president nominee on the libertarian ticket. he ran for senate in massachusetts in 1996, but lost to john kerry. he will not run as an independent if he does not win the republican nomination. more parents are pleading not guilty in the college admission scandal. lori loughlin and her husband waived their right to appear before a judge. they submitted signed pleas of not guilty. they are charged with paying $500,000 to guarantee both their daughters admission into the university of southern california. so far, 16 parents decided to fight charges against them. clean up is under way in beantown after the most thrilling finishes in boston marathon history. >> to the finish line. who will take the win in boston?

"the washington post" reports democratic presidential candidate, bernie sanders released his tax returns showing he is a millionaire. the vermont senator and his wife earned $1.7million the past two years. that puts them in the top 1% of all taxpayers. much of sanders income came from books he wrote. he's made income inequality a huge part of his campaign. at recent campaign stops, he does not think his wealth contradicts his message. "the new york times" reports president trump says he will give tiger woods the presidential medal of freedom after a remarkable comeback of
