marked car was ambushed by a man with a gun. >> shots fired. >> just before 11:00 last night, a police officer's car was shot at and hit by a bullet as the officer was approaching the intersection of -- the officer made a u-turn and fired at the suspect hitting him. >> we have one suspect down. he's on civic, southbound civic west of washington hospital. >> two nearby officers responded to the shots fired call and a k9 unit was brought in to help secure the suspect. they told the suspect to stop moving, but he ignored their commands and he was able to crawl toward his gun and point it at the officers and the officers fired an undetermined amount of bullets at him. >> this is a dangerous oers gh >> tyaid t

was given to the suspect, but he died 17 minutes after shooting at the police officer. >> we're transparent. our goal is to truly build trust within our community. we train our officers if you are shot at, have you to protect not just yourself but the community. so it's hard to try to save someone that's just tried to take your life. >> police will release more details within the next two to three days, they'll release the body camera footage some time in the future. in fremont, jackie ward, kpix5. the alameda county district attorney's office will conduct an investigation. a high school student presumed dead after he went boogie-boarding near -- authorities say that the 18-year-old from heyward was with some friends, but they lost track of him. and then later saw his board come back to shore without him. the friends went out to look for him, but the waters

got too rough. the victim's identity has still not been officially released yet. we'll have more on this story on the kpix5 news at 5:00. taking a live look at sfo where we're getting word of an emergency landing. according to delta, flight 1359 from sfo to jfk returned for a maintenance issue. it's not clear what that issue was. delta is working on getting those passengers to their destinations. investigators are looking into the cause of a strip mall fire in alameda county. it broke out before 5:30 this morning at sweet honeyeeopr lew over the scene near joaquin avenue. firefighters tell us the fire started in the kitchen. they knocked down the fire pretty quickly, and it did not spread to any adjacent businesses. alameda county fire department posted these pictures of the fire, and no one was inside the restaurant and no injuries reported. a judge could decide if the man

accused in a deadly bar stab is competent to stand trial. c -- cowell charged with stabbing -- saying there's quote substantial evidence that he is mentally incompetent. he could face the death penalty or life without patrol. a california couple accused of torturing their 13 children was sentenced after reaching a surprised plea deal. and anne mackovec tells us about their plea deal. they were -- we heard from their children this morning. the terpent's pleaded guilty to keeping their 13 children locked in a so-called house ofro and the abuse was uncovered

after an 18-year-old girl escaped and called police. they're accused the beating, starving and chaining their children to furniture and they let them shower once a year. the youngest child is 3-year-old. the oldest is now 30. two of the couple's children spoke 2 of the couple's children spoke in court for the first as their parents faced sentencing and the judge didn't allow video of them testifying, only audio. >> i loved both of my parents so much. although they may not have been the best way of raising us, i'm glad they. did. >> i saw my mom change my mom, and they almost changed me. i did what i could to not become like them. i'm a fighter and i'm shooting through lifelike a rocket. addrd the court and said she's sorry and wanted the best for her

deadly explosion at a southern california airport. this accident happened last night at fullerton municipal airport. fire crews say the twin engine was filled with fuel after it crashed after takeoff killing the lone pilot and the plane banked left and nose dived into the ground. police have not yet released the victim's identity. they describe him to be in his 50s and say that he was heading back home to utah. coming up, severe storms taken to a new level. the piles of bricks that reigned down on cars. plus uber is stepping up its safety features following the death of a college student. the new reminders, the next time you step into a ride share. a cooler day today. we're tracking our next weather system. i'll show you future cast and what that means for our weekend, coming up.

look at what happened to these cars during severe storms in the southern plains. authority in jackson, mississippi says a storm ripped bricks off the facade off this apartment building. no injuries were reported. but the storm is blamed for at least four deaths. both the new york stock exchange and the nasdaq are closed for good friday. earning reports -- trading will resume monday. uber is getting a dollar investment. ayanese

clouds and cooler temperatures. it's a cooler day today compared to yesterday for sure. here's a live look with our suture cam and you can see the follow recognizing over the golden gate bridge. temperatures are warming up in spots so mid 60s in downtown san francisco. looking at upper 60s for santa rosa and low 70s for san jose and concord. one of the cooler spots, low 60s in oakland. so let's talk about that 24-hour temperature change. we are looking at many locations, many cooler compared to yesterday at this time. 4 degrees cooler at half moon bay. and 5 degrees cooler at the oakland airport. and 3 degrees cooler in mountain view. and 2 degrees cooler in san jose. 7 degrees cooler compared to yesterday at this time in napa. so we have this ridge of high pressure. it's going to break down a bit. we're tracking our next weather system in the pacific in the west. that's going to slide down into our area and will affect our weather as we go through

today's tip of the day is a purple beans. i like making them with bean salad. i like to boil them with steam and saute them with oil olive and add
