the information they're trying to keep private. ♪ good morning from the studio 57 news room at cbs news pgood to be with you i'm york, anne-marie green. we begin with a bomb scare and an arrest this morning in new zealand. it happened in christchurch, the very same city where a gunman killed 50 people in two mosques last month. police today located a package containing a suspected explosive device and ammunition at a vacant property. nearby homes were evacuated and a no fly zone was imposed before the package was rendered safe. a 33-year-old christchurch man has been arrested and the package was found a half mile from one of the mosques targete. police have not said whether the bomb investigation is linked to that shooting attack. back home, an army veteran has been charged with allegedly planning a terror attack in

southern california. he apparently wanted to avenge the mosque shootings in new zealand. investigators say mark steven domingo was planning to bomb a white supremacist rally in long beach. federal officials say it was designed to inflict mass casualties. here is how fbi agents stepped in and were able to stop this attack. >> this is a case that keeps us up at night. >> reporter: federal prosecutors arrested u.s. army veteran mark steven domingo on friday for planning to bomb a white supremacist rally in long beach, california. >> he allegedly purchased 3 inch long nails specifically because the nails were long enough to penetrate the human body. >> reporter: investigators say the 26-year-old who recently converted to islam was planning retribution for the new zealand mosque attacks. >> he was taken into custody after he took receipt of what he thought were pressure cooker bombs. they were inert devices provided by the fbi that posed no danger to the public.

>> reporter: the fbi first launched an investigation after noticing his internet posts. on march 3rd, he wrote, america referring to oct01 mass shooting in las vegas that left 58 peopdomingo said he wan to kill jews as they walk to synagogue. he wanted to kill and target police officers. or attack crowds at the santa monica pier. >> domingo's brother says they are surprised by the arrest. >> like anybody else, i don't want to assume a thing if he joined a religion. if anything, i thought it was a good thing. i thought my brother found some sort of guidance in this world. >> reporter: if convicted, domingo faces up to 15 years in prison. the leader of isis has surfaced in a new video. abu bakr al-baghdadi praises the deadly easter bombings in sri lanka this month. here are the details.

>> reporter: alive and well,de baghdadty makes a shocking appearance. a shock because for five long years the isis leader has gone to great lengths to remain in since s fit anlast public appearance at the mosque in mosul in 2014 when he first declared the creation of the so-called creation of the islamic caliphate. it's unclear where or when the footage is filmed, but it refers to the isis financial stand in eastern syria which we witnessed for ourselves last month following weeks of ferocious fighting marking the end of isis as a territorial force. but ak-47 at his side, baghdadi is seen vowing vengeance that isis would wage a long battle ahead. >> there's still tens of

thousands of them in iraq and syria and there franchises across the world all the way from west africa to southeast asia. so, they are far from defeated. they will continue to conduct attacks in places like sri lanka and other places. >> reporter: toward the end of the video he's heard praising the perpetrators of the sri lanka suicide attacks on easter sunday, but it's audio only, suggesting it was added on after the footage was shot. >> reporter: as for his whereabouts, u.s. officials and syrian defense forces we were with told us he's thought to be hiding out in the desert waste lands of syria or iraq, but the video itself provides little indication of his current location. >> this first video message in five years, not only shows that baghdadi is alive but he's still exerting control over the group. in his messge the caliphate may have been defeated but the isis network continues to expand across the globe.

there are new details about the deadly synagogue shooting in southern california. 19-year-old john ernest is expected in court today and charged with one count of murder and three counts of attempted murder. mourners packed the synagogue yesterday to honor lori kaye. kaye died after jumping in front of a rabbi just moments before the shooter opened fire saturday. three others were hurt including the youngest victim, an girl. >> i don't think anybody should go through it no matter like what age because you're supposed to live life. you're not supposed to live hate. >> the fbi says at least one tip was posted on social media just minutes before the attack. there were no specifics on who made the post or the location being targeted. president trump is suing deutsche bank and capital one in an attempt to block

congressional subpoenas for his financial records. the president wants a federal judge to declare the subpoenas unlawful. president trump is proposing charging asylum seekers a fee to process their applications as a way to slow the surge of migrants crossing into the u.s. white house officials did not say just how much the application fee might be. mr. trump also wants to bar anyone who has entered or tried to enter the country illegally from receiving authorization that allows them to work. deputy attorney general rod rosenstein submitted a letter of resigntion to president trump. his resignation will be effective may 11th after the senate has confirmed the man nominated to replace him, jeffrey rosen. his departure ends a nearly two-year run defined by husband his appointment of a special counsel to investigate alleged connections between the trump campaign and russia.

"the new york times" reports the country's worst measles outbreak in 25 years is continuing unabated. there are now more than 700 cases in 22 states this year. more than 70% of the cases were in people who had not been vaccinated. the largest outbreak are in orthodox jewish communities and around new york city. the cdc is blaming it on a campaign of misinformation from anti-vaccine groups. some say the groups have targeted jewish communities. >> they're definitely being

it was taken down yesterday. on the cbs money watch now, be aware a new scam involving google chrome and trouble for the woodstock 50th anniversary festival. diane king hall is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, diane. >> good morning, ann marie. apple takes center stage with the iphone maker expected to release its second quarter financial results. a number of other notable earnings are on deck include including con foe phillips, g lerks, mastercard, mcdonald's, pfizer. banks and financial companies led the market gains on monday. the dow rose 11 points. the s&p 500 added 3 and the nasdaq gained 15. boeing ceo says the safety systems on its 737 max jets were properly designed. in a meeting with shareholders yesterday dennis mullenberg said boeing is working to make the jets safer following two recent deadly crashes. the anti-stall system was a common link in both crashes. all boeing 737 max planes remain grounded worldwide.

a new fishing scam that uses a fake address bar is targeting google chrome. the scam, which a software developer calls the inception bar targets android mobile users by trapping them into clicking a fake web page. from there, scammers can still steal user passwords and credit card information. if you lock your phone and unlock it on the web page the real address bar will show up on top of the fake one exposing the scam. marriott plans to launch a home rental market platform to compete with airbnb. "the wall street journal" reports they already have a pilot program that offers more than 300 properties for home sharing stays in four european cities. guests using the platform can also earn and redeem loyalty points. reports are swirling about the woodstock 50th anniversary festival being cancelled. a major investor is pulling funding siting safety concerns, but organizers for woodstock 50 say the festival is still on and they plan to bring in new

an attempt to block congressional subpoenas for his business records. two house committees subpoenaed deutsche bank and several other financial institutions as part of investigations into mr. trump's finances. the president wants a federal judge to declare the subpoenas unlawful. director john singleton is being remembered this morning for his ground breaking movies. he died yesterday after being taken off life support following a stroke he suffered this month. singleton was 51. vladimir duthiers has more on his work. >> we got a problem here? >> reporter: john singleton's debut "boys in the hood" was dominated for two academy awards including best director in 1992 making him the first african-american film maker and at age 24 the youngest ever to be nominated. >> why is there a gun shop on every corner in this community. >> why? >> yeah. >> for the same reason that there's a liquor store on almost every corner in the black community. why? they want us to kill ourselves.
