protests tdead as the leadership power struggle heats up. good morning from the studio attorney general william rs barr is refusing to appear before the house judiciary committee today to discuss the mueller report. barr's refusal comes after he testified for more than five hours before the senate yesterday. president trump praised barr's performance saying he did a fantastic job and dismissed calls for his resignation as abuse from people that are running for president. laura podesta is here in new york with why barr is not willing to testify today. laura, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. in a statement the justice department called the house

judiciary committee stipulations inappropriate. now democrats say they're considering to hold barr in contempt of congress if he doesn't show up. attorney general william barr says he will not come before the house judiciary committee today one day after he was grilled by senators on the mueller report. >> he's trying to blackmail the committee. >> chairman jerry nadler wanted lawmakers and staff attorneys from both parties to be able to question barr. he refused. >> given how dishonest he's been, i can understand why he's afraid of facing more effective examination. >> president trump defended his attorney general's decision. >> well, i guess they want to treat him differently than they have anybody else. you elect people that are supposed to be able to do their own talking. >> barr did spend five hours in front of a contentious senate judiciary committee yesterday. >> please, mr. attorney general. give us some credit for knowing what the hell's going on here.

today.trystan rrell isha with the deaths of two students. police say howell helped stop terrell. students and staff at unc wilmington gathered to honor the victims of unc charlotte's shooting. a unc student who was on her way home to the wilmington area when she heard about the shooting was on her way to last night's vigil. >> you hear about it all the time on the news and you think, oh, na happened there, it's never going to happen to me. and when it happens to you and the school you go to and people you know, it shifts your whole reality. >> police say terrell bought his handgun legally. they're still investigating a motive. venezuela's opposition leader is taking new action

aimed at forcing nicolas maduro to relinquish power. juan guaido urged workers to stop working this morning following a series of strikes. this follows a second day of protests where at least one person was killed following a clash with security forces. nick bryant of our broadcast partner bbc reports from inside venezuela. >> reporter: they're calling for protests. proud patriots like caped crusaders said that their beloved country is becoming like a failed state. with conviction, we'll gain freedom. businessmen such as carlos gonzalez vowed they would keep taking to the streets. >> we're looking for the freedom of our country. . it is a mess. we've got to do everything we can. >> reporter: in the midst of this, juan guaido desperate to keep up the momentum, but he's calling for military leaders to switch their allegiance appears so far to have backfired.

soon the march became a confrontation. this highway that cuts through the middle of the capital for a second day, a battlefield. both sides are calling for a mass mobilization as a way to influence the military. these are targeting an air base right in the heart of caracas. authorities were determined to hold the line and so far they haven't been overwhelmed. what we're witnessing here is the battle for hearts and minds and there haven't yet been defections that anti-government protesters were hoping for. on national television president maduro claimed victory flanked by the military top brass. his hopes of remaining in office depend on him keeping them at his side. nick bryant, bbc news, caracas, venezuela. back here at home thunderstorms are expected to affect millions. more than 11 million people

across eight states are in the path of this system. the storm has the potential to bring tornados, damaged winds, hail, and flooding. in iowa, the mississippi river is flooding. >> the water came at me. it was like a horror movie. it was like a wall of water. >> there were also reports of at least three tornadoes yesterday. afternoon from northwestern texas into south central oklahoma. no damage was reported. president trump is asking congress for $4.5 billion in emergency funding to help address a surge in migration at the southern border. the trump administration will ask migrants crossing the southern border to take new dna tests as part of a crackdown on fraud. testing will be voluntary and the samples will only be used to determine family relationships,

not to prosecute. the testing will begin with a pilot program as early as next week. president trump is outraged over a major firefighters union's endorsement of joe biden. he retweeted nearly five dozen tweets rejecting the president's claim of support of firefighters. the 58 retweets apparently thought to make the case that while the association of firefighters union's leadership supports biden, many firefighters support mr. trump. biden joked during a campaign stop yesterday in iowa that he expects to be the object of the president's attention for a while. a cruise ship was quarantined in the caribbean over concerns of a passenger with the measles. health officials in st. lucia say there's one confirmed case on the ship. the ship is affiliated with the church of scientology. there was a midnight showing of "avengers: endgame" in orange county.

the southern california colt was the early 4/1 favorite. he galloped yesterday morning without a problem and his trainer said everything was fine, but that changed by yesterday afternoon. the horse's condition is not considered career-threatening. a "jeopardy" game show player faced close competition, and the college admissions scandal may snag more parents. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. people are on edge as prosecutors pursue more parents in the college admissions scandal. defense lawyers say prosecutors have informed additional parents that they are under investigation, but the number's unclear. so far, 33 parents have been charged. defense lawyers also say that other parents are worried about becoming targets and are scrambling to hire attorneys to figure out what to do. "the wall street journal" looks at a congressional budget office report that says medicare for all could lower expenses while impeding care.
