good morning from studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters in new york. anne-marie green is off. i'm brook silva-braga. good to be with you. president trump now says special counsel robert mueller should not testify before congress. that's a change in position and it's raising questions with house democrats. they've set the date of may 15th at the date for his testimony. that's next week. it would mark the first time with regard to russian interference. tom hanson is in new york with why some lawmakers from bothet sides of the i'll say they want him to testify. good morning. >> good morning, brook. if there's one thing they want to hear, it's from robert mueller. he's been tight-lipped throughout the two-year investigatio now

president says he wants to keep it that way. president trump has reversed course, now insisting special counsel robert mueller should not testify before congress. on friday the president said that he'd leave mueller's testimony up to his attorney general william barr who was asked about it last week by the senate judiciary committee, but yesterday the president retweeted that stance, stating, bob mueller should not testify. er earlier in the day both took to the morning political shows saying they're eager to hear from the author of the 400-plus-page investigation. >> he's spent well over $30 million, had all the assets in place with the grand jury. he is the one that's the central figure here. >> on "fox news sunday," david cicilline said the date of the 15th has been the date to testify so far. >> the white house said they would not interfere. >> cicilline later testified on twitter nothing has been agreed to yet and that a date had only

been proposed but not yet accepted. and in the meantime house judiciary chairman jerry nadler has given tone jern real barr until today to deliver an unredacted version of the report. brook? >> tom hanson here in new york. thanks. the u.s. is deploying an aircraft carrier to the middle east after fears of a possible attack. it's in response to troubling indications and warnings from iran. among the those being dough employed is the "uss abraham lincoln carrier." . the israeli army lifted potential restrictions on people living in southern israel signaling a cease-fire with gaza. over the weekend they bombarded israel with hundreds of rockets while israel carried out hundreds of air strikes.

palestinian medical officials have confirmed israel's 23 deaths. four israelis were also killed. the bloody violence was the bloodiest since the 2014 war. investigators in russia confirm at least 41 people were killed when a passenger jet burst into flames during an emergency landing. the plane had just taken off on a flight from moscow to murmensk yesterday when the pilot was forced to turn around. massive flames engulfed the plane as it skidded down the runway. mola lenghi reports. >> reporter: a plane made an emergency landing at sheremetyevo airport outside of moscow. russian investigators say at least 41 of those people including two children were llono theshowngut from the side of the flame. other cellphone video shows desperate passengers using the

emergency explicit slides to escape and flee from the massive fireball behind them. there ere reports of bad weather in the region. about 30 minutes after takeoff the plane was forced to turn back for unspecified tech cal reasons. officials say the plane bounced upon landing, hitting its lane three times. the hard landing caused fuel to dispel. the pilot had more than 1,000 hours of experience flying the plane. the airplane belongs to the flagship russian carrier aeroflot. a criminal investigation has been opened in moscow, which is standard whenever there's an aviation death in russia. mola lenghi, cbs news, new york. back home a boeing 737 is expected to be pulled out of a florida river after it skidded off a runway. new video shows some of the 143 passengers and crew on the miami air charter flight on the plane's wing. this is just moments after it left the runway on friday.

22 people were treated for minor injuries, but all are expected to be okay. >> i was extremely lucky i was able to come home to my kids, my two boys. that's all i kept thinking about as i was trying to get out of the plane. >> the flight datta recorder has been recovered. investigators are still searching for the blavoice recorder. the cause of the crash, is, of course, under investigation. president trump's former personal lawyer michael cohen is expected to hold a news conference before reporting to prison later today. cohen was sentenced to three years for tax evasion, lying congress, and campaign finance crimes. he'll serve his time at a federal prison. the facility is known to be fairly comfortable. includes tennis courts. he'll be joined by prominent sources like richard sorrentino

those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand today. the "chicago tribune" reports another body was found in the rubble of an illinois chemical plant that exploded and burst into flames on friday. authorities say the body was found yesterday as search crews looked through debris at the silicone plant north of chicago. nine employees were there when it exploded. three people were killed and one person is still missing. canine dogs are helping in the search. >> however, when we're dealing with the chemicals, we're dealing with the heavy fire, all of those scents can throw a dog off as well. >> the cause of the explosion is under investigation. "the wall street journal" reports boeing knew about software problems with a cockpit safety alert on its 737 max jets for a year before telling the faa.

p it was designed to alert them when an important sensor might be providing incorrect information about the pitch of the plane's nose. that sensor malfunctioned during two flights that crashed, killing 46 people. officials say it was only after that second crash in martha boeing became more forthcoming about the problem. it isn't clear, though, if the alert system would have prevented either crash. the "washington post" says president trump picked a former border chief to become director of u.s. immigration and customs enforcement. mr. trump tweeted yesterday he had selected mark morgan who has publicly backed the president's border wall. morgan was in his position at border patrol for only a few months before he was ousted shortly after mr. trump took office. the president recently pulled the nomination of a previous choice to run i.c.e. the norew orleans advocate reports diana ross tweeted she felt violated by a tsa screener at the new orleans airport.

in a series of tweets yesterday, the 75-year-old singer described what she said was an overly intimate and aggressive pat-down by the screener. ross said the female tsa toucher touched her between her legs and tsa says it is investigating, but its initial video review of the incident says all protocols were followed. the owner of the winner country house feels terrible he has to apologize for his horse winning the race. his horse won only after officials disqualified the horse that crossed first, maximum security, for interfering with other horses. >> you know, you always want to win with a clean trip and have everybody recognize the horse as the very good horse, the great athlete that he is. >> maximum security's owner says he's considering appealing the decision. and, yes, even president trump

eat at an airport restaurant. i didn't know they were that good. on the "cbs moneywatch" president trump threatens with more tariffs, and a recall of frozen chicken strips. diane king hall is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, diane. >> good morning, brook. china this morning says negotiators are state prepared to go ahead to washington for trade talks despite president trump's threat to raise tariffs. the president tweeted the current 10% tariff on some $200 billion of chinese goods will rise to 25% on friday. he also threatened to impose 25% levees on an additional $325 billion of chinese goods. that news sent the markets in asia falling this morning. u.s. stock futures are also lower. on wall street friday, the dow rallied 197 points following a strong jobs report. the s&p 500 added 28 and the ly 12 llion pounds of frozen chicken strips.

♪ eye of the tiger he must be so sick of this song, huh? tiger woods has a tee time at the white house today. not exactly a tee time, but the golfing legend is scheduled to receive the presidential medal of freedom from the president in the rose garden later today. after years of injuries and personal issues, woods staged a comeback last month to win his fifth masters title. it was highly dramatic. afterward mr. trump tweeted mr. woods would receive the medal because of his, quote, incredible success and comeback in golf and more importantly life. it was a very special farewell for one woman in british columbia, canada.
