trade war. and actress huffman pleads guilty in the college admissions scandal that rocked the world of higher education. how long she could spend in prison. good morning from the studios in cbs news headquarters in new york. good to be with you. i'm ann marie green. the ntsb is heading to alaska today to investigate a deadly mid air collision between two sight seeing planes. the accident happened yesterday in ketchikan. the sust coast guard confirmed four people are dead but ten people were taken from the wreckage and taken to the hospital. they were in fair and good condition. the coast guard spent the overnight hours searching for two others still missing. the flying seeing company suspended operations while federal authorities investigate the accidents.

princess cruises released a statement saying they are deeply saddened by the news and providing help to the families affected by the crash. president trump says he's going to take further action to help the nation's farmers in the midst of an escalating trade war with china. china yesterday announced increased tariffs on $60 billion in u.s. goods. the move comes after president trump increased tariffs on $200 billion in chinese exports. and anxiety spread across the stock market yesterday amid the trade war fears. the dow plummeted 617 points. s&p 500 lost 69 points. the nasdaq dropped 269 points. hillary lane is here in new york with how farmers are reacting. hillary, good morning. >> good morning, ann marie. farmers who export to china are being hit particularly hard by the new tariffs. many farmers are part of president trump's base in the last election. now some say they're losing profits and losing patience. the trade war with china took

its toll yesterday. sending stocks into their worst one day slide since early january. >> we're doing really well as a country. >> last night, president trump said he's confident it will work out. >> i'll let you know in three or four weeks whether or not it was successful. you never really know, right? i have a feeling it will be very successful. >> he suggested placing more tariffs on chinese imports. >> we have the right to do another $325 billion at 25%. >> those not covered by the existing tariffs. china's top diplomat remains optimistic, insisting both country's negotiating teams has the wisdom to resolve the demands. >> we love our farmers. we take care of our farmers. >> the president is promising to subsidize farmers targeted by chinese tariffs. >> which is about $15 billion and do something reciprocal to our farmers. >> though many say they would

last year and is accused of illegal coal shipments in violations of sanctions. new video appears to show the extent of damage to a norwegian flag ves until what is described as a sabotage attack off the coast of united arab emirates. the footage shows a hole in the hull above the water line. officials claim the two savvy oil tankers were targeted on sunday. authorities are investigating the incident. the u.s. says iran is likely behind the attack. attorney general william barr appointed john durham, a u.s. attorney in connecticut to examine the origins of the russia investigation. the inquiry will focus on whether the government's meth adds to collect intelligence relating to the trump campaign were lawful and appropriate. president trump accused of them of spying on his campaign. alabama state senate is expected to vote on the nation's

most redistrict af borgs bill. the bill would ban all abortions except in cases where the mother or embryo is in danger. a doctor who performs an abortion would face up to 99 years in prison. last week georgia became the sixth state to enact a heartbeat bill banning abortion. none of the state laws are in effect because they're facing legal challenges. the company behind the roundup weed killer will appeal after an attorney found the herbicide caused a couple's cancer. the verdict includes $2 billion in punitive damages and $55 million in compensatory damages. the judgement is the third and largest against the parent company biayer involving the product. the couple used the weed killer for more than three decades for residentialen land xaping. both were eventually diagnosed with non-hodgkins lymphoma.

>> the epa was never told the truth. the original study that got the drug approved was fraudulently done. the scientists that did the studies went to jail. that's right. went to jail for doing this. >> bayer insist that's the key ingredient in roundup is safe. and five years after the death of eric garner, the new york police officer accused of using a banned choke hold on him is getting his day in court. his 2014 arrest was played at a disciplinary hearing yesterday. investigators say daniel and other officers were trying to handcuff garner after stopping him for allegedly selling untaxed cigarettes. garner started to struggle and he put him in a choke hold to subdue him. garner later died. he maintains he never choked garner and that his technique was in line with his training. >> we all seen the video. we've all sat and watch him being murdered.

not nationally but worldwide we've seen this and they're still playing games. >> garner was suffering from multiple he multiple health issues when he refused arrest. a judge will determine how long actress huffman will spend behind bars. huffman formally entered a guilty plea for her participation in the college admissions scam. the actress broke down in tears while explaining that her oldest daughter has a learning disability and requires extra time on tests. cbs news news legal analyst says the early actions helped her. >> huffman's early plea is not only good for huffman, it also has to be looked as bad for those other people that are not rushing to the courthouse to plead guilty. >> she admitted to paying $15,000 to have someone alter her daughter's s.a.t. score. prosecutors are recommending

those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. "the washington post" reports before president trump outed two officials, they challenged a secret white house plan to arrest thousands of migrant families and ten major u.s. cities. arrest was have required coordinated raids targeting parents and children in their homes and neighborhoods. but home land security secretary and top immigration enforcement officials halted the operation. they were reportedly concerned about a lack of preparation by ice agents. the public's reaction and that it would divert resources from the border. "the wall street journal" reports the returning of boeing's grounded 737 max planes is delayed posing further headaches for airlines. federal regulators are targeting next week for preliminary approval of a software fix for the plane's automated flight control system. but final approval is likely to take longer. that means the max may not fly

again until mid to late august. the planes were involved in two deadly crashes. usa today reports carbon dioxide levels in the earth's atmosphere reached the highest level in human history. data from a hawaiian observatory shows co-2 levels surpassed 450 parts per million last friday. that is higher than any of the levels in more than 800,000 years. they say co-2 from fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and gas is most responsible for global warming. carbon dioxide levels were higher millions of years ago but the planet's temperatures were also much hotter. and the "denver post" report's colorado governor signed a bill requiring the state to set aside $100 for each newborn's college savings. the money will be put into investment funds for all kids born or adopted between 2020 and 2040. before a child turns 5, parents must open a college savings account. when they do, the $100 money

stock markets in asia were lower amid the u.s.-china trade standoff. on our shores, notable earnings reports including apparel giant ralph lauren, agilent technology and tilray. shares of uber dropped 10% yesterday to $37.10. the first full day of trading yesterday since the stock market debut friday. the ipo price was $45. ruling by the supreme court allows a huge antitrust class action lawsuit against apple to move forward. it accuses apple of forcing consumers to buy apps exclusively from the th giant. it alleges consumers pay inflated prices because apple requires all phone software to be sold and purchased through the company's app store. the lawsuit also says apps will be cheaper if software developers could sell to users directly. apple argued that only app developers should be able to bring such a lawsuit.

there is growing concern about an e. coli breakout traced to ground beef. the number of people sickened has grown to 196. the problems affect 177 people in ten states. the cdc reported last month so far no one has died. the cdc and the u.s. department of agriculture continues to investigate the link. walmart is ratcheting you up the battle of the shipping wars announcing free next day delivery. the new perk will be on select walmart.com orders over $35 and do not require a membership fee. the rollout the begin in phoenix, las vegas, and southern california. walmart says next day delivery will reach 75% of the country by the end of the year. the move follows last month's announcement by amazon of free one day delivery for all prime members. and amazon announced plans to help existing employees start their own small delivery businesses. the company says they will cover up to $10,000 in start-up costs
