morning." from the bro cast center in new york city, i'm don dahler. captioning funded by cbs it's friday, may 17th, 2019. this is the "cbs morning news." rising tensions with iran. as president trump tones down talks of war, congressional lawmakers demand more information. an f-16 fighter jet crashes into a california warehouse, the problem the pilot reported before the plane went down. and millions of americans in more than a dozen states could get hit with severe weather this weekend. we're breaking down the threat for tornadoes, hail, and flash flooding.

good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, president trump is downplaying thtalk of war amids u.s. and ira when asked if the u.s. was going to war with iran, the president replied, i hope not. congressional lawmakers are questioning it more. marc liverman is here in new york with new details about what may have led to the escalation in tensions. good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. iran's leaders believe the u.s. is preparing to attack them. they're leaving them to prepare possible counter strikes. iran says it's not an option rngs but is skeptical whether real diplomacy is possible with the u.s. president trump is hoping tensions with iran subside. >> mr. president, are we going to war with iran? >> i hope not. >> he told acting defense secretary patrick shanahan the

same thing, he does not want war with iran. however, the american buildup in the persian gulf continues. the group on the uss lincoln has arrived south of iran. u.s. intelligence officials claim they have evidence of credible threats, including satellite missiles on iranian boats to possibly strike targets on land. on thursday the white house briefed a group of top congressional leaders known as the gang of eight on this. house committee chairmanned a an schiff is one of them. >> the efforts to ratchet up efforts with iran is leading us in a very dangerous place. >> classified briefings will be given to the rest of congress on tuesday. >> i'm hoping it's not too late literally. >> i would tell administration you should pick up the phone and call members of congress so we don't have a microphone put in our face, asking us if we're

doing something that we have no clue. >> tensions have risen in the past year since president trump pulled out of the iran nuclear deal. the ambassador to the united intelligence said fake intelligence. in another interview he he's not interested in rising tensions but they have a right to defend themselves. anne-marie? >> all right, marc. thank you very much. investigators are trying to figure out what caused an f-16 fighter jet to crash into a california warehouse yesterday. it had just taken off from the air base east of los angeles. the pilot ejected and parachuted to safety. jonathan vigliotti reports. >> reporter: the f-16 fighting falcon pancaked onto a roof shortly after taking off.

the pilot ejected before the plane went down. >> we've searched the building, searched the area, were able to evacuate the people that were inside that building. out of those 12 people were triaged and treated to exposure to debris from the aircraft. they were deaconed and transported with minor injuries to a local hospital. >> reporter: reports say live ammo was on the aircraft at the time of the crash. jonathan vigliotti, cbs news, los angeles. millions of people in more than a dozen states are in the path of severe weather this weekend. tornadoes, large hail, and damaging winds are possible. there's also a risk of flash flooding. chief meteorologist drew burgoyne of our milwaukee affiliate wdjt tells us where the storm may hit. >> good morning. i'm meteorologist drew burgoyne. the storm is moving along the upper west coast.

there's a possibility of upper-elevation snows. the problem is once that storm moves further to the east, we're talking multiple days of severe weather. that severe weather risk extended throughout the dakotas south into texas for your friday, and then that will be shifting east throughout the central part of the united states from iowa into missouri, south into oklahoma and texas. strong to severe storms over the next several days capable of producing strong winds, hail, and even tornadoes. so later on for your friday, storms developing throughout the dakotas, and then additional storms southwest of dallas will start to really increase overnight into saturday morning with additional storms moving throughout the central part of the united states and continuing east by the end of the weekend. i'm meteorologist drew burgoyne, cbs news. the trump administration is planning to move hundreds of migrants from crowded camps in the southern u.s. along the border in to florida. federal officials have told

people in pal. beach and broward county to expect hundreds of thousands of asylum-seeking migrants in the next two weeks. the proposal emphasizes new security measures at the border and shifts to a merit-based selection process for legal immigrants. house speaker nancy pelosi objected to how the plan defines "merit." >> it's really a condescending word. are they saying family is without merit? are they saying most of the people coming to the united states without history are without merit because they don't have an engineering degree? >> meanwhile a 2-year-old died after crossing the border. this becomes the fourth who has died since being detained at the board ore since december. the president's reported income of at least $434 million in 2018.

the trump interal hotel in sh he rd he's it least million. these disclosures come as the trump administration reaches a deadline today for a s&p for house records of at least six years of taxes. a federal judge has ordered portions of robert mueller's report unredacted and made public. it's related to the former white house national security adviser michael flynn. flynn told mueller's office that people connected to the trump administration and congress apparently tried to influence his cooperation with the russian investigation. flynn is awaiting sentencing after admitting to lying to the fbi about his conversations with the russian ambassador in the u.s. in 2016. and missouri's house today plans to ban abortion at eight

war ii soldier bob dole. the army promoted dole to the honorary rank of colonel. during war he was severely wounded by machine gunfire in italy. it took him nearly three years to recover. he's been awarded with two bronze stars and two purple stars. rocker gene simmons made a surprise visit to the white house and a surprising study on children killed by gunfire. "newsweek" looks at a report that looks at more children were killed by guns since the sandy hook 2012 massacre than soldiers in combat since 9/11. the department of defense report says since the war on terror began after the 9/11 terror attacks in 2001, 6,929 soldiers have died in overseas combat, and in 11 fewer years, about 7,000 children have been killed by gunfire since sandy hook.

"usa today" reports the judge ordered chelsea manning back to jail for refusing to testify before a grand jury investigating wikileaks. the former intelligence analyst spent seven years in prison for providing wikileaks with tens of thousands. then president obama commuted her sentence. yesterday manning said she would rather starve to death than agree with them. >> as someone who would rather receive a commutation, she now refuses to simply answer questions. >> i've already been to jail, to prison, so, something to coerce me with a grand jury s&p is just not going to work. >> manning says she objects to the secrecy of the grand jury process. she already spent two months in jail for refusing to testify before a previous grand jury. manning was released last week when that grand jury's term expired. she will stay in jail this time up to 18 months or until she agrees to testify. "the wall street journal"

reports the group overseeing the s.a.t.s plans to sign an adversity score for every student taking the test. the college board will use 15 factors to calculate the number. they include the crime rate and poverty levels from the students' high school and neighborhood. students won't be told the scores, but colleges will see the numbers when reviewing the applications. 50 colleges used the score last year as part of a beta test. the "washington post" says with more than 1,100 people dead, congo's ebola outbreak is getting worse. doctors are being forced to go under cover because of violent attacks. the world health organization has logged 119 attacks this year against health workers with many being kelled or wounded. some people falsably belief foreign health care workers started the epidemic. this is the second deadliest ebola outbreak in history. the hill says k.i.s.s.'s front manhattan gene simmons

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. it is the middle of may, but in kingsville, california, you wouldn't know it. there was a late spring snowstorm yesterday. the fresh coating made driving conditions difficult. the national weather service expects more snow today in parts of the sierra nevada. the snow is adding to the snow and rainfall totals that is now above normal. on the "cbs moneywatch" now, a software fix for boeing's max jets, and talk of settlements in the las vegas mass shooting.

diane king hall is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, diane. >> good morning, anne-marie. let's start with this. two stocks may be on the move today but in opposing directions, pinnen tret and in nvidia. pinterest reported a loss while nvidia beat expectations. earnings expected today include deere and park electric chemical. stocks rose yesterday due to strong earnings from walmart and cisco boosting investor optimism. the dow rallied 214 points, the s&p 500 rose 25 points, and the nasdaq gained 75 points. boeing says it has finished updating the flight control software for the 737 max. this moves the company one step closer to getting the planes back in the sky after two deadly crashes. the next major step is a test flight to demonstrate the update through federal aviation regulators. the software called mcas was implicated in deadly accidents in indonesia and ethiopia. mgm resorts told federal regulators it may pay up to $800

million to settle liability lawsuits stemming from the las vegas mass shooting. the company told the s.e.c. it may reach settlement by next year. mgm resort says it has $751 million in insurance to pay toward the settlement. a lawyer handling mediation talk for plaintiffs called it premature to report a possible settlement range. resultly 4, were harmed when a shooter roughly 4,200 people say they were harmed when a shooter opened fire at a concert at the mandalay bay resort casino in 2018. and the council of fashion designers of america have decided to grand barbie the reported prestigious aware. the doll is cited for her wide in flungs on fashion and culture. it coincides with barbie's 60th anniversary. fashion designers have all made special barbies. >> take that, bratz dolls.

in places like somalia and iraq. those years of service took a toll. >> i had a couple of challenge, couple of issues with some explosions. >> his memory began to fail. he was diagnosed with mild traumatic brain injury or tbi. >> i wanted to fix today what the problem was. that's what soldiers do. >> most people recover from mild tbi, but about 15% continue to experience symptoms, which include mental health problems like depression and cognitive changes including problems with memory and attention. since 2000, nearly 400,000 servicemembers have been diagnosed with tbi. >> it's really a public health concern. >> dr. louis french studies at the walter reed medical center. they're testing a computerized brain training program to see if it could be part of a training program for people with tbi.

>> these are people who have multiple problems with attention problems. >> reporter: members diagnosed with tbi or cognitive impairment do five hours a week of what's called brain h.q. or computer games. they found after 12 weeks, those in the brain training program scored better than game-players on cognitive function but not daily acts of living like finding food items on the shelf. >> what we saw were improvements in attention and memory largely. >> it didn't take me back to where i was, but it gave me improvement, which i appreciated. >> these are early days for this type of treatment. the theory is it might work by increasing the speed and accuracy of information processing by nerves in the brain, much like weight lifting increases the strength of sc york. mip t "this morning," facebook chief
