president probably in the history of this country. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. violent storms erupted in central u.s. overnight. this week's storms are blamed for at least seven deaths. watches and warnings remain in effect from texas to louisiana. the biggest threat, heavy rain, damaging winds, and tornadoes. a tornado touched down in jefferson county overnight, and the twister was described as large and destructive. buildings were damaged, and there were multiple reports of people trapped, and at least three people were killed in missouri in a separate tornado

outside of joplin yesterday. elsewhere in the u.s. floodwaters continue to rise. mireya villarreal reports. >> reporter: homes north of the city of oklahoma are on the brinks. one collapsed. one was swept away by the water. >> it usually just floats, but now it's just eroding everything fast. >> reporter: the same storms responsible for rising floodwaters made their way east. a tornado in adair, iowa, destroyed a house, killing one person in size. a submarine that once floated during world war ii was sitting on dry land three days ago. 22 miles away, the arkansas river is close to cresting, forcing the entire webers falls to evacuate. jules hall is packing up her entire home with the help of family and friends >> i am moving my furniture out because if it gets to what it's forecasting, it will get in the house. >> reporter: three blocks away,

farron lee is watching the water creep up to a home he's been living in for 43 years. he's hoping to return home. >> hopefully this piece of dirt will be here. the house will be gone. the tree will be here and i'll still have yard and i'll come back. >> mireya villarreal, cbs news, oklahoma. cbs news has confirmed that another migrant child died in custody. the department of homeland security says a 10-year-old girl died eight months ago. she's the sixth migrant child known to have died in custody since september. matt pieper is following the growing outrage surrounding this newly disclosed death. >> reporter: she was in the settlement for seven months. she had a history of heart problems and after a surgery in a san antonio hospital, come i complications led to her death. her death comes on the heels of another child who came monday after crossing the u.s. border. 16-year-old carlos hernandez spent six days at the border

patrol central processing center in mcallen, texas. but when he was diagnosed with the flu, he was transferred 20 miles away. the day after he was moved, he was found dead. back in guatemala his mother is still trying to get answers. she said there's no information to know how he died, and she's fighting to have his body sent back home as soon as possible. on capitol hill yesterday kevin mcaleenan was grilled by house democrats. there was this tense exchange with congresswoman lauren underwood about conditions at migrant facilities. >> people keep dying, so this is obviously more than a question of resources. at this point with fever kids who have died, 5,000 separated from their family, i feel like and the evidence is really clear this is intentional. it's intentional. it's a policy choice made by this administration and it's cruel and inhumane. >> that's an appalling accusation, and our men and

women fight hard to protect people in our custody every single day. >> reporter: government agencies like border patrol and i.c.e. do not have to report a child's death. they only have to report it internally and to child agencies. matt pieper, cbs news. president trump has given an ultimat ultimatum. yesterday he abruptly ended a meeting including nancy pelosi after he was accused of cover-ups. laura podesta is in new york with how congress is reacting to the president's latest threat. laura, good morning. >> good mornin, anne-marie. well, congressional democrats are likely not surprised by the president's repeated cry of harassment, but perhaps they should be more concerned. that's because the divided congress hasn't done much since democrats took control of the house this year. infrastructure was always seen as a hopeful area where the two sides could come together, but now that mr. trump is threatening not to work with democrats, even progress there

"the london times" reports may resisted calls this week to remove her from office. the deadline to leave the eu is

the 31st. the uk is the world's fifth largest economy and one of america's largest trading partners. and today the pentagon is expected to present the white house with a plan to send up 10,000 more american troops to the middle east. the move comes amid ongoing tensions with iran. the troops will be defense forces and include additional missiles and warships. earlier they tong congress the u.s. does not want to go to war with iran. it's unclear whether the white house will approve the plan. lawyer michael avenatti is now charged with ripping off a famous ex-client. avenatti had represented adult film star stormy daniels against president trump. in an indictment, it's alleged he stole $300,000 daniels was owed for her book detailing an alleged affair with the president. he also is accused of extorting money from nike by threatening to go public claiming nike was

paying high school basketball players. in march he denied those claims in an interview with cbs news international correspondent jericka duncan. >> did you try to extort nike for millions of dollars? >> no. and any suggestion is absurd. >> ave nady ty says he never misappropriated money and will be fully exonerated. mario batali is facing his first criminal charges. a woman says he forcibly kissed and groped her at a boston restaurant in 2017. a spokeswoman for the suffolk county district attorney's office says batali will be arraigned tomorrow for assault and battery. batali left his daytime series "the chew" in light of that. u.s. warplanes have again intercepted russian bombers and fighter jets off the coast of alaska.
