plus, the reasons several states are expecting a rare travel arirbans millions are on the move for the holiday weekend. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom here at cbs news headquarters. i'm anne-marie green. as people are cleaning up they're facing another disaster, flooding. parts of the capital, jefferson city, are now shut down, and the airport is also closed in anticipation of severe flooding. wednesday's tornado ripped through the town of about 40,000 people. it's the latest of severe storms that have slammed the u.s. david begnaud is observing what's left behind. >> reporter: disaster hit the state of missouri under the cover of darkness. they were found outside of what

was left of their home in threthf here, a tornado touched down on missouri's capital, jefferson city. 100-mile-per-hour winds tossed vehiclomesnd buildings and scattered serval yards. >> my grandfather started his chevrolet business in 1936. we've never experienced destrukds like this. >> i almost cried. >> if you had to guess, what percentage of your lot is ruined? >> it's going to be 90%, i bet. >> reporter: there were only a few minor injuries in jefferson city. no one was killed here. >> it looks like it came right through this area. >> yeah. >> reporter: mayor carrie tergin said the tornado warnings probably saved lives. t to bed around 11:30

and heard it. >> it's amazing. >> it is. when you see some of these homes without roofs and people were able to walk away from that, it's incredible. >> reporter: it's been a wild week of weather for the southern plains with more than 175 tornadoes, eight people have died, and there has been destructive flooding. in muskogee county, oklahoma, the arkansas river continues to swell. already it's pushed two barges carrying 4,000 pounds of fertilizer, causing them to crash into the webers false dam. the county has been evacuated and officials told residents if the dam fails, it could be catastrophic. david begnaud, cbs news. lawmakers are expected to pass a $19 millions disaster aid bill. the midwest has been hit with record floods since march.

"the wall street journal" reports harvey weinstein has reached a tentative deal to settle multiple lawsuits filed by women accuse him of sexual misconduct. it includes him, his board members, and the state attorney general's office. the money would go to his rm emf his company, and studio creditors. the weinstein company filed for bankruptcy last year. the insurance companies would reportedly pay the money. he's still charged in new york city with rape and other sexual misconduct crimes. "usa today" reports that president trump is demanding that legal immigrants reimburse the government of welfare

benefits. he approved a memorandum yesterday instructing agencies to reinforce a 20-year-old clinton-era law. critics say it unfairly punishes low income immigrants who need assistance to get started in the u.s. the white house says too many immigrants take advantage of american generosity. "the new york times" reports on a federal reserve survey that finds that many adults would struggle to cover an unexpected expense. the feds say four in ten americans would not be prepared to pay a $400 expense with cash or savings that could be paid off quickly. that i would have to borrow or pay something and 12% would not be able to cover it at all. the fed did say that household finances overall have shown a marked improvement since it started the annual survey six years ago. and "the boston globe" reports someone broke into a massachusetts man's home and they didn't take anything.

our top stories this morning, the threat of severe weather will continue this weekend across the midwest. the mi missouri, are shutting down after a powerful toerchd hit on wednesday. the airport was evacuated in anticipation of flooding. and president trump has ordered everyone to cooperate with his investigation into investigators. attorney general william barr is looking into the origins of robert mueller's probe as to whether the president's 2016 campaign colluded with russia. the pentagon has outlined possible plans to deploy more troops to the middle east to counter iran, but there is a new stark warning to the u.s.
