good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. president trump is in japan for a state visit, but u.s. relations with iran and north korea remain in the spotlight. overnight in tokyo, mr. trump held a news conference with japanese prime minister shinzo abe. laura podesta is in new york with a message about security and trade. good morning. >> good morning, ann marie. regarding security president trump downplayed any threat from north korea. we know that north korea's missile tests have threatened japan, but president trump today said he was not personally bothered by the launches and called kim jong-un a smart man. as far as trade, japan's prime minister did not get specific. neither did president trump. but japan's prime minister said at the press conference that japan is walking hand in hand wihe issues, d woakey.s. stat

after a weekend of watching sumo wrestling and playing golf, president trump got down to business on monday. the president's whirlwind trip to japan hit a high note this morning with a formal visit to the newly installed emperor naruhito. he became the first to visit him since he took the throne three weeks ago. he then had a sitdown with japanese prime minister shinzo abe. >> he's looking to create a nation that has great strength economically. >> north korea is high on the agenda in tokyo. on wednesday the president tweeted, north korea fired off weapons which disturbed others but not me. he said the conflict would be resolved peacefully.

>> he knows nuclear is not going to happen. he understands that. he is a very smart man. he gets it well. >> the president also says he supports abe's effort with another nuclear program, iran. >> the prime minister has spoken to me about that. i do believe iran would like to talk. if they would like to talk, we'd like to talk also. we'll see what happens. >> abe is reportedly considering a visit to tehran possibly by mid-june. and later today president trump will attend a formal state banquet at the imperial palace. then tomorrow he'll participate in a memorial day event before returning to the u.s. anne-marie. >> laura podesta in new york. thank you so much, laura. back home, nearly half the country is expecting to see extreme weather today. severe weather warnings are posted for the central and southern plains. damaging winds, large hail, and tornadoes are all possible. heat is gripping parts of the south and the east. flash flooding will also be a serious concern. parts of the arkasas area are preparing for the worst flooding

in recorded history as the arkansas river rises. the national weather service iniallile rock expects levees to fail. and just outside colorado the weather brought snow. and as meg oliver reports, in oak people are cleaning up after tornadoes. >> reporter: a tornado tore through el reno. p it ripped through a mobile home park. at least two fatalities were reported. survivors describe the destruction in the town about 25 miles west of oklahoma city. >> i looked straight out the window which was busted and saw my neighbor's trailer rolling over. >> when we got up, the whole house was overturned. >> we had a lot of patients on the patio. we started seeing tents overturned, chairs overturned.

>> reporter: it was an ef-3 with winds up to 165 miles an hour. at one point it was 75 yards. the twister was on the ground for just over two miles and lasted four minutes. el reno mayor matt white said many people living in the mobile park are spanish and don't speak english, making rescue efforts more complicated. >> we're more than a community. we're a family. we're going to overcome this. >> reporter: white said more than two dozen people were taken to the hospital, some undergoing surgery. meg oliver, cbs news. severe thunderstorms will remain a threat in the plains and the midwest. meteorologist sarah roblesky of our boston station wbz has our forecast. we'll watch for widespread showers across the midwest. severe weather threat will shift to the north and east with flash flooding, severe thunderstorms, and damaging wind gusts through the plains and ohio valley. that severe weather shifts to

the east on tuesday, but it will be enhanced with widespread weather from oklahoma to iowa. we'll have to watch again for this persistent jet stream dip across the south. upper level low will push into the four corners. the heat will continue to build. in fact, we're going to be watching for cooler than average temperatures for the northern and western part of the u.s. for memorial day while temperatures in the 80s are expected through the plains. i'm expecting temperatures in the 90s. record heat for memorial day, close to triple digits in some locations. i'm meteorologist sarah wroblewski, cbs news. a popular hawaii beach is closed this morning after a california man was killed by a shark. 65-year-old thomas smiley was killed while swimming at a beach in maui. smiley was on vacation with his wife. >> we were watching the man get pulled up.

we could hear her screaming, that's my husband, that's my husband. >> maui is a hot spot for tiger smarts. authorities have not said what kind of shark was responsible for this attack though. and a florida woman is recovering this morning after being bitten by an alligator. the attack happened yesterday about 20 miles west of cape canaveral. fire and rescue officials say the woman was bitten on the leg and the side. the florida fish & wildlife conservation warns people not to feed gators and only swim in designated areas during the day. alligator attacks are rare but not unknown in the south. the president of peru is touring the earthquake devastation in his country. the 8.0 magnitude quake hit early yesterday morning in a remote part of the amazon jungle. at least one person was killed and another 18 hurt. peru's national emergency operation center reports damages to buildings including five schools, two religious temple and four health centers.

"the detroit news" reports cleveland cavaliers owner and billionaire businessman dan gilbert is recovering after symptoms of a stroke. the 67-year-old founder and

chairman of quicken loans was admitted to the hospital yesterday. the company said he received immediate medical attention and is recovering comfortably. details on his prognosis were not released. "usa today" says another horse died at santa anita racetrack in southern california. it's the 26th horse to die since last december. the 9-year-old gelding injured its front left race during a race on saturday. the horse was euthanized yesterday. santa anita was closed for much or march while a study was done on the racing surface. a task force was created last month to investigate the deaths. the "green bay press-gazette" says packers hall of fame quarterback bart starr is being remembered as a kind and humble man who exuded class. he had been in failing health after suffering two strokes and a heart attack in 2014. starr led the packers to five nfl championships and wins in the first two super bowls.
