studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york, good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. overnight an outbreak of tornados hit western ohio causing so much damage that officials are using snowplows to remove the debris. a large and dangerous tornado hit northwest of dayton last night damaging homes, schools, and interstates. a twister also caused destruction in salina where police are asking people to avoid coming into the city. a reporter with our cbs affiliate in dayton says virtually an entire neighborhood was destroyed in salina. fire officials are going door to door to help people who may be trapped in their homes, and shelters have been set up. at least seven people are hurt, and this is just the late nessta series of storms that have edhe ominous clouds unleashed a pounding hailstorm near chicago. it brought down power lines and this gas station canopy in wh i.

the canopy stopped moving he got out of the driver side and walked into the gas station, so he got very lucky. >> reporter: sirens warned of a tornado on the northern illinois/indiana border, and a second tornado touched down in iowa. in the past week, at least 15 people have been killed by tornados and flooding across the nation's midsection. rivers are rising to near record levels, threatening homes and businesses in arkansas, oklahoma, kansas, and missouri. the mayor of tulsa, oklahoma is urging residents who live near a tulsa county levee along the arkansas river to evacuate now. >> folks that live along the arkansas river corridor that have property along the arkansas river corridor need to be preparing for the worst and hoping for the best. >> reporter: downstream near fort smith, arkansas, the river has reached historic levels, and it's not expected to crest until wednesday, 20 feet above flood stage.

over the weekend, an ef 3 tornado packing winds up to 165 miles per hour cut through el reno, oklahoma, killing t injuring more than 25. >> just unbelievable that, you know, that a tornado could do this type of damage. it doesn't do it justice when you see it on tv, i mean, it's just unbelievable anybody could survive. >> reporter: there are more severe storms in the forecast for later this week, omar villafranca cbs news, el reno, oklahoma. severe thunderstorms will remain a threat in the plains and midwest through tomorrow. meteorologist sarah wroblewski of our boston station wbz has the forecast. >> another active day setting up across parts of the plains as the jet stream not budging leading to cooler than average conditions across the west and the heat to build across the southeast. we'll watch this upper low injecting energy into developing storms through the plains and midwest on tuesday. we'll also watch for record heat

across parts of the carolinas to the gulf coast. looking at the severe weather outlook, an enhanced risk meaning scattered storms from oklahoma to iowa but also for parts of ohio and pennsylvania. the main threats being large hail, damaging wind gusts, may even see some scattered tornados and even a tornado or two across parts of the northeast on tuesday. most of the activity will get going as we get into the afternoon and evening hours, still watching for mountain showers of snow and rain out through parts of the west, but the severe weather threat remains for parts of the midwest as well as through the ohio valley, rain across parts of the northeast will lead to cooler than average conditions. taking a look at the temperatures, a drop expected for parts of new england as well as the northern tier states, but the heat builds across the southeast with highs in the 90s, close to 100 degrees. we're watching for that heat wave to continue over the next couple of days. i'm meteorologist sarah wroblewski, cbs news. overseas now where a knife wielding man attacked a group of school girls waiting for a bus.

in japan at least two people were killed and 16 injured. it happened early this morning in the city of kawasaki outside of tokyo. the man had a knife in each hand and started screaming i will kill you before slashing the girls. the dead include an 11-year-old girl and a man believed to be the father of one of the children. president trump offered his sympathy before leaving japan. >> all americans stand with the people of japan and grieve for the victims and for their families. >> the suspect died after reportedly cutting himself in the neck. police say his identity and motive are unknown. president trump has wrapped up his four-day state visit to japan. he's scheduled to return to the white house this afternoon. earlier today, the president greeted u.s. service members aboard a navy ship docked in japan. the president tweeted his appearance aboard the u.s.s. wasp as a memorial day event. laura podesta is here in new york with more on how his visit

went. good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie, during talks with prime minister shinzo abe president trump said it became clear that the u.s./japanese alliance has never been stronger, but it's apparent that no concrete deals were struck during mr. trump's visit to the island nation, at least not on trade or even security. for example, japan wants the u.s. to do more to stop missile tests out of nearby north korea, but president trump's approach to kim jong-un is wait and see. >> president trump spent his final hours in japan visiting troops stationed at a naval base south of tokyo. >> i want to start by saying happy memorial day. happy memorial day. >> the base is jointly operated by the u.s. and japan. >> this is the only port in the world where an american naval fleet and an allied naval fleet are headquartered side by side. >> reporter: at a stop aboard a japanese destroyer mr. trump touted the strength of the u.s.

alliance with japan. he also led a rally on the u.s. side of the base attended by nearly a thousand members of the armed forces. earlier in the day, though, the president broke with japanese prime minister shinzo abe. abe expressed concern over recent missile tests by north korea. president trump seemed less worried. >> all i know is that there have been no nuclear tests. there have been no ballistic missiles going out. there have been no long-range missiles going out, and i think that someday we'll have a deal. >> reporter: while the trip to japan produced no breakthroughs on trade or national security, it did allow the president to spend several c.s ally. prime minister abe said he wille between the u.s. and iran as tensions escalate. on iran, president trump said he thinks iran would also like to make a deal in regards to ending its nuclear program, but a

spokesperson for iran's foreign ministry has already pushed back on that comment saying they see no prospects of negotiations with the u.s. anne-marie. >> laura podesta in new york, thank you, laura. a colorado climber died shortly after reaching the top of mount everest. 62-year-old christopher kulish, an attorney in boulder is the 11th person to died. kulish died at a camp below the summit during his descent. the cause of his death is unknown. eleanor net has summited everest four times and says a record number of climbers brings the risk of dangerous overclimbing. >> you're using up a limited amount of supplemental oxygen to help you survive. and secondly you're getting weaker by the minute. the crowds certainly are a t mouthre las week. most are believed to have

suffered from altitude sickness. the measles outbreak in the u.s. is getting worse. there are now a total of 940 confirmed cases this year. the cdc reported 60 new measles cases just last week across 26 states. it is the highest number since 1994, public health authorities have blamed the increase on the circulation of misinformation about vaccines. a 13-year-old has died and 14 others hurt after a section of stage collapsed at a theater in eastern china. it happened during a dances competition for teenagers. dozens were performing on stage at the time. rescuers found a girl stuck underneath the collapsed stage after more than 20 minutes firefighters managed to pull the girl to safety. the cause of the accident is under investigation. coming up on the "morning news," we remember a major league all star whose career was overshadowed by a famous error. and abortion battle, the latest state to soon pass a ban on abortions. this is the cbs morning news.

"the washington post" reports another red state could soon pass an abortion ban, but this time it would be a democratic governor signing it into law. the louisiana legislature is set to vote today on a six-week fetal heartbeat abortion ban. if it passes, democrat john bel edwards has pledged to sign it into law. he says his views come from being catholic. his opposition to abortion is deeply personal, when his wife was 20 weeks pregnant a doctor

told them their daughter had spina bifida and encouraged an abortion. they refuse skd and their daugh got married in 2015. california senator dianne feinstein renewed her call for races to be suspended at the santa anita racetrack. 26 horses have died at the track since december 26th including three in the last nine days. feinstein said there needs to be thorough investigation of practices and conditions at the track before any more races are held. a state investigation is already underway, but if i recalls soff reason for the increase in horse deaths may never be known. the "new york times" says an albino pda china for the very first time. the all white panda was photographed with an infrared camera in a nature reserve forest in april. it's estimated to be 1 or 2 years old. the panda's appearance is caused by a rare genetically inherited condition. it results in white hair or pale skin and reddish eyes. government officials say the
