captioning funded by cbs it's wednesday, may 29th, 2019. this is the "cbs morning news." tornadoes terrorize the central u.s. it's been two straight weeks of vicious storms, and the severe weather isn't over yet. banning abortion. missouri's only abortion clinic ma i be forced to shut down by the end of this week, making it the only state without a facility. plus another deadly plane crash near alaska. it's the fourth fatal crash in the region in the last few weeks. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york.

good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, a violent am of storms hit across the central u.s. last night. one of the hard evidence hit areas, lynwood, kansas, where many neighborhoods now look like war zones. homes were damaged, power lines knocked down, and cars tossed around like toys. laura podesta joins us with more of the widespread damage. laura, good morning. >> good morning, ann marie. if you're counting, this is the 12th straight day of tornadoes and kansas is the last to be hit. but communities in the central midwest and southeast cannot let their guard down yet because the tornado threat still isn't over. this massive funnel cloud touched down in lynwood, kansas, just outside kansas city as tornadoes continue to plague the midwest and plains. the storms have spread to the east as well.

>> all of a sudden it's like rapidfire machine guns hitting the side of the house. >> reporter: twisters were reported in an area that stretched from colorado to new jersey. >> we have a safe room underneath the front porch. we were down there listening to the warnings and heard the roof come in and knew pretty much everything upstairs was gone. >> tuesday marks the record 12th day that at least eight twisters were reported in the u.s. the old report 11 days stood for 39 years. >> everywhere we looked a tree blown down or a roof blown off or a house blown over. >> it's the worst month for tornadoes. today more than 500 twisters have spawn and there are three days left until june. >> the house started to pull us a little bit and then we heard the upstairs just blow up and water started rushing in from up above. the national weather service says conditions will remain ripe for more tornadoes for most of this week. and so far these tornadoes are

being blamed for at least 15 deaths. the most recent victim was a elderly woman in ohio who was killed when a car was blown into her house. anne-marie? >> wow. laura podesta here in new york. thank you, laura. flooding is the longest lasting since the great flood of 1927. every county in the state of oklahoma is under a state of emergency. evacuations remain in effect as the arkansas river threatens dozens of communities. the river topped two flood levees yesterday and could peak above 20 feet above flood stage today, and to make matters worse, more rain is expected this week. sarah wroblewski of our boston station wbz has the forecast. anotherive day shaping up across the mid-atlantic on wednesday as more severe storms

wacre going to tag abe even a tornadoes with widely scattered storms from northeastern texas into southern missouri as well as the pittsburgh and baltimore area as we're having this weather boundary that will be draped through the region. flooding is also of concern at least until thursday as the storms roll on through. we've got a lot of moisture streaming in from the gulf as temperatures continue to soar into the 80s and 90s with cooler than average temperatures to the north. we will expect to see these storms clash all thanks to a weather boundary, a cold front that will be pushing into the plains and the mississippi valley igniting the storms through the afternoon hours on wednesday. through the ohio valley and mid-atlantic, that, too, will allow for the storms to develop, and as we go through our thursday, the focus will shift from the ohio valley into the mid-atlantic, and the severe

weather will lighten up a little, but still the isolated storms will be possible for thursday. i'm meteorologist sarah wroblewski, cbs news. a law will go into effect today when doctors can detect a fetal heartbeat. the news comes as missouri takes center stage in the debate and may soon be the first state in the u.s. to no longer offer abortions. janet shamlian reports. >> reporter: the only clinic in missouri may be forced to stop performing them friday. planned party parenthood says the state will likely stop. it would mark the first time since the 1973 roe versus wade decision that a state would be without an abortion clinic. jennifer box used a clinic to terminate a previous pregnancy due to a genetic anomaly. >> if something's wrong, i won't be able to do anything in the state we live in, and that feels awful in a way i don't really

know how to articulate. >> brian westbrook is an anti-abortion rights advocate. >> the way this is written, we can save lives immediately here in missouri with or without roe versus wade. >> reporter: at least 15 states have passed outride restrictions. five passed the heartbeat bill. louisiana will likely pass its heartbeat bill. john milkovich is sponsoring it. >> where is the consideration for the woman? what about rape. >> what about cases of incest? there's no consolation for that. >> our feeling is someone commits a sexual assault, the unborn baby has committed no crime. >> reporter: that vote is expected to easily pass at the louisiana state capital, and john bel edwards says he will

sign it into law. janet shamlian, cbs news, baton rouge. >> they're going to sue to keep it open. coming up on "cbs this morning," an interview with the ceo of planned parenthood, dr. leana wen. the ntsb is looking at what caused a plane to crash in canada that killed two top u.s. safety officials. john babcock was the head of aviation safety for the national parks service in alaska and eric benson was the agency's safety offer. their small engine plane crashed after takeoff on memorial day. this crash follows three others in alaska in recent weeks that killed nine people. six of those victims were killed in a midair collision of two sightseeing planes near ketchikan. and for the first time a woman lost in hawaii in a forest there for more than two weeks is talking about her ordeal. amanda eller said it began when she when on a three-mile jog and got lost.eahysical therapist and yoga instructor

lived on insects, wild berries, and stream water. she said she slept in the mud after more than two weeks volunteer teams spotted her from a helicopter on friday. >> i'm seeing these guys and my heart fell through my feet. i just collapsed. i had a plant in my mouth i was planning on eating for dinner. >> along with severe sunburn, eller lost 20 pounds and fractured her leg after falling into a ravine. doctors say she's recovering very well. nepal's board is determining how many permits it will allow for climbers trying to climb mt. everest. it's the tallest peak, and they rely on the climbing center to bring in $300 million each year. nepal's government says that it has no plans to restrict the number of permits issued next year. coming up on the morning news now, efforts to pass a $19

are sometimeed again. those are some of the morning headlines on the newsstand. the gop lawmaker again blocked the disaster aid bill. the $19 million aid provides support to areas hit by flooding, tornadoes, and other disasters. but it was objected using unanimous consent and said it should be voted oi ed on by th house. >> they say, oh, it's impolite to talk about it how we're going to pay for this kind of spending. when is the proper time to talk about how to pay for it? >> massey's remarks drew rebuke from both parties. the long awaited bill has already been approved by the gop controlled senate. the "washington post" seas senate majority leader mitch mcconnell confirms he would help president trump fill another supreme court vacancy in 2020 if the opportunity arises. mcconnell said yesterday he'd try to push through any nomination mr. trump might make

to the high court even during an election year. that contradicts mcconnell's position under president obama. in 2016 mcconnell blocked the nomination of merrick garland, citing the upcoming election. the norm times looks at the border wall being built in new mexico. the half mile long wall is going up in southeastern mexico near the u.s. border. a group called we build a wall raised $22 million in private donations. >> averaging about $65, some as low as $5, some as high as $10,000. so just under half a million americans have donated to help l >> crinc ected leaders questi the ll'sffectiveness and legality. it said it will only push migrants into more remote and dangerous areas. the city where it's being built

as issued a cease and desist order. and game of throne star kit harington checked into a rehab retreat for stress and alcohol. the end of the series hit him hard and he went to the facility to cope. it reportedly costs more than $100,000 a month. harington plays jonathan snow. here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. on the "cbs moneywatch," mackenzie bezos plans for the reward she receives from the world's richest man. diane king hall is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, diane. >> good morning, anne-marie. several retailers expect to release reports. notable companies include abercrombie & fitch and companies which hold tommy hilfinger and calvin klein. now, stocks fell yesterday led by losses in shares of utilities

and health care companies. the dow dropped 237 points, the s&p 500 was down 23 points, and the nasdaq lost 29 points. huawei is taking the next step in its legal case against the u.s. government. it filed what's known as a motion for summary judgment. it's a request that the court rule in huawei's law as a matter of law. they say buying the law is unconstitutional. essentially the company is saying this case presents questions about law and does not currently involve any dispute over facts. meanwhile mackenzie bezos is promising to give at least half of her fortune to charity. the announcement comes just after she received more than $35 billion in her divorce from the world's richest man, amazon founder jeff bezos. the newly minted billionaire signed the giving pledge. it encourages them to give more than half of their money during their lifetime. or in their wills. the bill was launched by warren

buffett and bill and melinda gates. "the wall street journal" reports the real estate firm cory hires drivers to identify homes on their routes that the company can buy and quickly sell for profit. participants in the house flipping market say using drivers as their eyes and ears cuts down on time and money wasted cold calling whole neighborhoods. and pikachu wants to make sure gamers get enough rest. the pokemon company is introducing pokemon sleep. just like the app sounds, it will turn sleeping into entertainment. it monitors users' sleep impact and rewards them for sleeping. >> i thought the reward was just sleeping. that's a reward for me. >> i know. that's for us. but, you know, it's like it's definitely younger generations who are really into, you know, these kinds of games and just gamers in general.

employee of the month last night. instead the errant ball ended up hitting a still photographer for the sox. fortunately both he and his camera is okay and he actually did get the picture. danger pay should be going his way. a timely letter written by an american sailor who made an ultimate sacrifice has a new home. vickky borlin's great uncle died after a surprise attack on pearl harbor. the letter he wrote to borlin's grandmother shortly after the attack. it describes his excitement about returning to his family. >> he wanted to come home. he had been discharged, so he was just waiting for his papers to come home. >> borlin said when she learned her son's high school band from illinois would be performing at pearl harbor for memorial day, she decided to honor her uncle by donating the letter to the national parks service there.

if it passes, louisiana's governor is expected to sign it. the ntsb is investigating what caused a plane crash in canada that killed two top u.s. safety officials. jeff babcock was the head of the aviation safety for the national park service in alaska, and eric benson was the safety officer. their small engine plane crashed shortly after takeoff from yukon on memorial day. it follows three other accidents in alaska in recent weeks that killed nine people. and there's been another episode involving an intruder caught on the grounds of mar-a-lago, the president's resort in palm beach, florida. paula reid has more on this. >> reporter: according to federal prosecutors, university of wisconsin freshman mark lindblom snuck through mar-a-lago tunnel that connects the beach to the presidents club. the incident occurred on february 23rd last year while mr. trump and his family were spending thanksgiving weekend at his winter white house. at one point that day the

president left the club to head to his nearby golf course. mark lindblom was wanded by secret service agents at the item's entrance, according to the "palm beach post." he remained at the club for 20 minutes. this intrusion came several months before a chinese woman illegally snuck into mar-a-lago by telling security she was a club member and was there for a swim. at the time, president trump expressed confidence in the secret service. >> secret service is fantastic. these are fantastic people, and the end result is -- it was good. >> reporter: lindblom reportedly said his motivation for sneaking into the club was just to see if he could do it. he's pleaded guilty and has been sentenced to one year's probation. paula reid, cbs news, the white house. coming up on "cbs this morning," actor ashton kutcher is expected to tickri of a seri killer known as the hollywood

may 29th. i'm kenny choi. >> and imichelle griego. it sounds awesome so let's get over to mary lee to talk about it. >> a beautiful day ahead, temps warmer compared to yesterday so continuing on that warming trend as we go through the next several days. we are talking low 90s inland by the end of the week. for today looking at our treasure island camera and of the bay bridge with mostly cloudy skies as we start off the day. temps running in the low to mid- 50s in many spots. although in concord in the upper 50s this morning. so average high temperatures for this time of year in san francisco, mid-60s, upper 60s in oakland, mid-60s -- mid-70s in san jose and upper 70s in concord, those are the average temperatures for this time of year. we are forecasting highs that are going to be a little bit warmer compared to that, so 67 in san francisco later on today, 69 for a forecast high in oakland, 78 in san jose and check out concord, soaring to 82 degrees and
