good morning from cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. this morning, millions around the world are marking the anniversary of d-day. it was exactly 75 years ago allied forces invaded the beaches of german occupied normandy, france. the bloody mission helped change the course of world war ii. this morning, there was a peaceful sunrise over omaha beach, france. that's where president trump will join other world leaders to mark d-day. ian lee spoke with some of the last veterans of that historic battle. >> reporter: the last time tom rice jumped out of a c-47, he was surrounded by death and darkness. 75 years ago the platoon sergeant parachuted with the 101st airborne over normandy, france to fight the nazis. this time the 97-year-old

dropped into a peaceful europe. >> beautiful jump. beautiful flight. everything was perfect. >> today the world remembers rice and all the allied troops who hit the beaches of normandy scrambling every inch straight into german gunfire. more than 6,000 americans made the ultimate sacrifice. president trump will join world leaders for a service at the u.s. cemetery to pay tribute to world war ii veterans. this will likely be the last time so many of them will gather to remember that fateful day when so much was riding on their shoulders. >> landed standing up for the most part. then went down to my knees and bounced a couple times because i had so much equipment. i had a difficult time getting out of that equipment. >> reporter: even after all these years, the powerful bombs from the battle still scar the landscape. but the beaches of normandy and surrounding farmland are peaceful. you can thank tom rice and the

greatest generation. ian lee, cbs news, london. coming up on "cbs this morning," co-host anthony mason will be in normandy with special coverage of d-day anniversary events. today, u.s. and mexican officials resume talks at the white house regarding president trump's proposed tariffs on mexican goods. mr. trump is trying to force mexico to stop the flow of migrants at the southern border. marc lieberman is in new york where members of the president's own party are hoping the tariff will be averted. >> good morning, anne marie. vice president mike pence met with mexico's foreign minutes for 90 minutes at the white house n general terms the trump administration is saying mexico should stem the flow of migrants from central america and send them back to their home countries. but democrat and republican lawmakers are raising concerns about using tariffs as a way to move the talks forward. >> negotiators from the u.s. and mexico say they're making

progress on a migration deal. president trump says it's not enough. last night the president tweeted from ireland. talks with mexico will resume tomorrow with the understanding that if no agreement is reached, ta the 5% level will begin on monday. the white house is trying to coerce mexico to do more to stop the flow of central american migrants into the u.s. customs officials say the situation at the border has become a full blown crisis. since january, nearly 440,000 people have been apprehended there. that's more than the entire population of cleveland. >> coming up by the millions. mexico can stop it. they have to stop it, ois, we won't be able to do business. >> the threatened tariffs be aren't playing well in congress. even among republicans. >> mexico does seem to be responding in a positive way and recognizes that the harm that this could cause not only to their economy, our economy as well. >> this is dangerous territory.

this is not a way to treat a friend or a way to deal with immigration. >> the tariffs could gradually increase and hit 25% if no agreement is reached with mexico. and mexico's foreign secretary says migrants, not tariffs, have been the focus of the talks with the u.s. anne marie. >> marc lieberman in new york. thank you so much. >> an ohio doctor charged with murder in the deaths of more than 2 dozen patients. the victims were between the ages of 37 and 85. hospital officials say they died from excessive doses of painkillers. as dean reynolds reports, the suspect was in court yesterday. >> reporter: first, critical care dr. william -- lost his job, then his right to practice medicine and now he could lose his freedom. his arraignment, his coat and tie were replaced with handcuffs and a jailhouse jumpsuit. in keeping with someone who stands accused of murdering 25 of his own patients. one of the biggest homicide

cases in u.s. history. prosecutors said the 43-year-old doctor knowingly ordered potentially lethal doses of thd. his arrest followed a six-month criminal investigation. tom quinlan is the columbus chief of police. >> this breach of a doctor's oath is vile and worthy of today's actions and that begins the process of holding him criminally accountable. >> 15 to life as to each count. >> reporter: they found he ordered doses that were 10, 20 and 40 times more than deemed appropriate. often after telling a family member their seriously ill loved one was actually brain-dead. helen young's husband died in his care. >> he said mr. young's kidneys are gone, his lungs are gone. he's brain-dead. i said, how did that happen at once?

i said, how in the world did that happen? >> officials say it's unclear what his motive may have been. his attorney says he was trying to ease his patients' pain, not kill them. if convicted, he could face 15 years to life on each one of the 25 counts. dean reynolds, cbs news, chicago. the number of measles cases so far this year has surged to the highest in nearly three decades. the department of health and human services says there have been 1,001 cases, 20 more cases than the cdc reported earlier this week. cases have been reported in more than half of u.s. states. in new york, nearly 700 cases of measles were reported this year. the historic flooding ravaging the heartland is expected to get even worse with more severe weather forecasted today and into the weekend.

including mexico. and back home, a huge swarm of insects showed up on radar and there's new 911 audio in the jussie smollett case. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. the chicago sun-times reports the city released audio from two 911 calls made by jussie smollett's manager the actor claimed he was a victim of racist and homophobic attack. >> does your friend need an ambulance? >> he just -- i just think he's -- pretty weird, ma'am. i'm scared and i don't know what it is. they put a noose around his neck. >> smollett's manager told police that he worked for an artist that he didn't want to name. the caller later told the operator that smollett was shaken up but that he didn't want to report the attack to police. smollett was later charged with staging a hate crime. the prosecutors dropped the charges. the "washington post" reports the trump administration is canceling english classes, soccer and legal aid for unaccompanied migrants staying

in u.s. shelters. federal officials say the influx of immigrants at the border created critical budget pressures. yesterday the administration said more than 144,000 migrants were taken into custody since last month. that's the highest monthly figure in 13 years. authorities have asked congress for almost $3 billion in emergency funding to expand shelters and care. usa today says starting today, veterans get expanded access to private doctors and the v.a. will pay for it. the new law was signed by president trump last year but didn't take effect until now. it will pay for veterans to see non-v.a. doctors if if they have to wait longer than 30 days or drive more than 30 minutes for health care at a v.a. facility. also to see private specialty doctors at government expense. cbs los angeles station says a swarm of ladybugs moving over

the edge of space. it will cost a minimum of $200,000 per passenger. on cbs "moneywatch." amazon is launching drone deliveries and fiat chrysler backs out of a merger proposal. diane king hall at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. we'll begin with this. although the bulk of earnings season is in the rearview mirror, there are a handful of reports that investors will be watching out for today. those include the parent company of jared. beyond meat. docusign and zoom video. stocks finished higher for a second straight day yesterday. the dow industrials rallied 207 points. the s&p 500 gained 22 and the nasdaq added 48. fiat chrysler withdrawn its merger proposal for french car maker renault. it followed a failed attempt by renault board members to reach a decision on the offer.

the french government requested a postponement on a vote. the french government is the biggest shareholder in renault with a stake of more than 15%. walmart redesigned. a staple. the familiar blue vest worn by sales associates. the biggest retailer ditched the old style following feedback from employees. the new vest will be a neutral steel gray with color on the trim. it's meant to help make associates more recognizable. meanwhile, presidential candidate bernie sanders showed up at a walmart shareholders meeting to urge the company to allow workers a seat on the board. >> walmart should give a voice to its workers by allowing them seats on the board of directors. the concerns of workers, not just stockholders, should be part of board's decisions. >> the democratic candidate from vermont also called for walmart youtube updated the hate speech policy prohibiting videos

with white supremacy and neo-nazi viewpoints. the streaming site made it more difficult to find the videos. but it's now outright removing them. youtube will also prohibit videos that deny certain events have taken place, such as the holocaust. the changes come as youtube, facebook and twitter face mounting concerns that the services allow extremism. amazon unveiled the latest prime air drone. the drone can do vertical takeoff and landings and can also fly around aerodynamically like an airplane. the company announced plans to use self-piloted drones to deliver packages to shoppers' homes in the coming months. the new drones use computer vision and machine learning to detect and avoid people when landing. amazon did not say exactly when drone deliveries will start or where they'll be operating. exne-marie t of pyou can't do
