57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, president trump and democratic presidential candidate joe biden were in the battleground state of iowa where they traded fighting words. yesterday mr. trump and te former vice president held dueling rallies in the hawkeye state. the president slammed biden calling him sleeping joe and biden called the president a threat to democracy. laura podesta is in new york. laura, it looks like we're going to see a whole lot more of this on the campaign trail. >> i think that's right. biden is at a rally in iowa and president trump is back in washington. they're trading jabs, anne-marie, and they ear close in the polls, but what's interesting is president trump has repeatedly said biden is the man he wants to take on in 2020. it may have been the preview of

the election in 2020. yesterday president trump and former vice president joe biden took aim at each other in the early battleground state of iowa. >> i believe that the president is literally an existential threat to america. >> joe biden thought that china was not a competitor of ours. joe biden is dummy. >> the president even suggested biden is a different guy. >> he's slower than he used to be. >> there are still 237 days to go until the iowa caucuses and 511 till the general election, but a new quinnipiac university poll shows biden with a 13-point lead over the president. what's more, cbs news has learned in internal campaign polling, it shows biden ahead in several states trump needs to win, including florida, north carolina, and arizona. >> i would rather run against biden than anybody. i think he's the weakest

p alleged shooter. meanwhile a hearing is expected for a the shooting. eddie vladimir feliz garcia has been charged with attempted homicide. police say he confessed to playing a role in the shooting but insists he did not pull the tricker. garcia is accused of being the getaway driver of the motor vehicle carrying the gunman. police say the man who fired the shot still on the loose. big papi was shot overnight at the dominican republic. he's recovering at a hospital in boston, and yesterday ortiz took his first steps after undergoing a second surgery. his wife said ortiz was stable, awake, and resting comfortably. the estranged husband of missing mother jennifer dulos is out on bond this morning. yesterday foe it is due low walked out of jail after posting a half million dollar bond.

he and his girlfriend were arrested for the disappearance of jennifer dulos. her blood was found mixed with her husband's dna at the home where she lived. the mother of five was last seen on may 24th in new canaan. and today the eldest son of donald trump, donald trump jr. will be interviewed by the intelligence committee. trump junior is expected to be questioned on a number of topics including what he knew about a trump tower visit in moscow and a campaign meeting with a russian lawyer.soer teaorheef thailand, 13-0. despite their growing popularity, the american players say they're not earning the money they deserve. 28 players are suing their employer, the u.s. soccer federation, a charge they deny.

parts of the west are under excessive heat warnings and advisories. temperatures are expected to hit 114 degrees today in palm springs. on monday san francisco hit an all-time june high of 100 degrees. there are calls to speed up harriet tubman's $20 bill, and taking a stand against abuse. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. the southern baptist convention adopted a proposal allowing it to dispel churches that mishandle sexual abuse cases. leaders of the denomination are meeting this week. pressure on the sbc has grown after reports that more than 700 people were sexually assaulted by nearly 400 church leaders and volunteers in the past two decades. >> i think our posture should be to listen to all of those who have survived this trauma and to commit to work to make sure that every church is doing everything

possible to prevent abuse and to care for those. proposal churches needs a second vote next year in order for it to be enacted. the "chicago sun-times" reports that the family of a woman killed in a crash says the cops were recklessly speeding. they have filed a lawsuit against the city and the officers. yesterday they showed surveillance video of last month's crash, a warning that the video may be disturbing to watch. the two police vehicles collided at an intersection while responding to a call of a man with a weapon. they crashed into the stopped car that gunn was riding in. three relatives in the car were

let's set the stange wit this. the government will be looking at the inflation which is scheduled to release the price index for may. meanwhile retailer lululemon is expected to release quarterly earnings. the dow fell 14 points, the s&p 500 dropped a point, and the nasdaq shed a fraction of a point. deliveries of new boeing jets are falling far behind last year's pace following the grounding of the company's 737 max jets. boeing said it delivered 30 commercial airliners in the month of may. that's down 56% from what itdy in may of last year. it plummeted from 47 a year ago to just eight last month. the faa ordered the grounding of the 737 max jets following two fatal flights. they're still being built, but they're parked for now. facebook is launched a new

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. 25 years ago today the o.j. simpson case began. that's when his ex-wife nicole brown simpson and ronald goldman were murdered in a gruesome scene in los angeles. the impact is still being felt today. here's chris martinez. >> it's crazy. it seems like yesterday. >> reporter: 25 years later, tanya brown refuses to allow the memory of her sister fade.

>> i miss her greatly this year. >> reporter: tanya is the youngest sister of nicole brown simpson and says over the years nicole's life and death has caused women to speak out against domestic violence. >> thank god we're talking about these issues and these causes that months before, years before, we weren't -- we weren't talking about it. >> reporter: nicole and her friend ron goldman were viciously murdered outside her brentwood home in june of 1994. what happened next captivated the nation. after an infamous freeway police chase, o.j. simpson was arrested and charged with the killings. his nearly nine-month-long trial dubbed the trial of the century became a massive and divisive public spectacle. >> we find o.j. simpson not guilty in the crime of murder. >> reporter: ending in the former football star's acquittal.

our top story this morning, a new quinnipiac university poll gives democratic presidential candidate joe biden a 13-opponent lead over president trump in a head-to-head matchup. the new poll comes as the two traded jabs during campaign stops in the battleground state of iowa. and here in new york city, an unusual journey. michelle miller introduces us to a young woman who went on an unlikely trip from the streets to the halls of ivy. >> reporter: 18-year-old athena cao-battaglia found the value of home in the nypd precinct where she volunteers. >> there's such a community with the auxiliary officers. they're all there for you. they have your back when you need them.

>> reporter: her journey is far from ordinary. athena was recruited two years ago near a homeless shelter. she's lived there since high school with her mother. lorain was a dance teacher but lost their home and home after being diagnosed with cancer. >> what was the hardest? >> i think the first night like when we went into the shelter system. we had one suitcase for each of us, and it was kind of like we're totally on our own right now. >> reporter: despite all that, lorraine never gave up on athena's education. >> i'm always made sure there were pens, erasers, internet, things kids need today, nowadays. >> how do you do that? >> you just save for the things that are important. >> reporter: which motivated her to reach unimaginable heights. >> i'm actually here. it's pretty -- it's really surreal in a way. >> reporter: athena just finished her first year at harvard university after earning a full ride. >> do you feel as though you had to make it? >> yeah. i didn't feel like there was an
