produce in the fields graduate from medical school. >> we were doing this for a specific reason, and it was to help our family, to help each other. >> ninan: good evening. i'm reena ninan. president trump is getting ready to kick off his re-election campaign, but just days before mr. trump's announcement that he'll seek a second term, some opponents are trying to keep him from finishing this one, calling on congress to launch impeachment proceedings. nikole killion is at the white house. >> reporter: president trump spent part of his birthday weekend at the golf course, ready to take a campaign swing to florida tuesday to launch his re-election. he started making his case for 2020 on twitter writing, "the trump economy is setting records, and has a long way up to go. however, if anyone but me takes over in 2020, there will be a market crash the likes of which has not been seen before." he added, "we are doing great in the polls, even better than in 2016, and will be packed at the

tuesday announcement rally." >> we've had over 100,000 r.s.v.p.s so far. they keep coming in every single day. >> what does that tell you about the enthusiasm? >> i think it means the enthusiasm is pretty good out there. >> reporter: but at rallies across the country, protesters sounded more calls for the president's impeachment. >> and we must begin it now! biden. a trump adviser tells cbs news expect the president to unleash more attacks against the former vice president as he jumps into full campaign mode. reena. >> ninan: nikole killion at the white house. saudi arabia and the united arab emirates are calling for decisive action to protect energy supplies after two oil tankers were attacked this week. president trump says iran is to blame. charlie d'agata is in the u.a.e. tonight with the latest. >> reporter: the tanker "front altair" in flames and adrift is now reportedly under tow to the united arab emirates. >> reporter: its 23 crew members rescued by the military and detained are soon headed home, too. iran insists it had nothing to do with thursday's back-to-back attacks on the altair, and the japanese tanker "kokuka courageous" despite repeated accusations from the trump administration. >> well iran did do it and you know they did it because you saw

the boat. i guess one of the mines didn't explode, and it's probably got, essentially, iran written all over it. >> reporter: images from u.s. military officials show a tanker with a hole blown in its side, and what military officials say is an unexploded mine still attached to the hull. later, the military released this grainy footage showing what showing what appears to be iranian forces removing the mine and making it off with it. germany's foreign minister cast doubt of the u.s. evidence and even the u.a.e. stopped short of directly naming iran. >> this has only been possible by a state-sponsored attacks. >> reporter: now, investigators here will be abe to take a closer look at one of the crime scenes as the "kokuka courageous" arrives here just offshore in the coming hours, and its contents, safely transferred to another ship. reena. >> ninan: charlie d'agata in the united arab emirates.

well, 11 people were killed and 25 wounded in somalia's capital mogadishu. the terrorist group al-shabaab claims responsibility for a pair of explosions today. one car bomb went off near the presidential palace, a second near the city's airport killed only the driver and an accomplice. one person was killed at a southern california costco last night when an off-duty police officer opened fire after an argument. carter evans reports shoppers ran for their lives. ( screaming ) >> mommy, we need to go somewhere. >> reporter: it was chaos at costco. shoppers ran for cover after gunfire erupted inside the store. >> tailor, get down. >> reporter: nikki tate was there with her daughter. >> my first thought was to just get low, get her low, and stay quiet, stay safe. >> reporter: the shooting happened friday night. the wholesale store was filled with families in corona, california, about 50 miles east of los angeles. >> we were basically shopping for father's day, and we heard two people arguing and stuff,

and the next thing we know we heard seven shots. >> officers arrived, anticipating an active-shooter situation. they went inside, encountered four subjects down. >> reporter: investigators confirmed it all started with an argument between shoppers that turned into an altercation. one of them pulled a gun and shot and killed the other. corona police confirmed to our los angeles station kcbs that the shooter was an off-duty l.a.p.d. officer. investigators say he was treated at the hospital for minor injuries and released. >> there were two other adults with apparent gunshot wounds that have been transported to local area hospitals. >> reporter: they're expected to recover. l.a.p.d. and corona police are now investigating the incident as an officer-involved shooting. >> it's a blessing that most of us are all safe. you don't think it's going to happen to you until it does. >> reporter: investigators are still talking to witnesses trying to determine whose at fault, but they've already wrapped up at the scene, and the costco is now open again for business. reena. >> ninan: carter evans.

thanks, carter. a judge in the dominican republic is ordering suspects in the shooting of baseball legend david ortiz to be held for up to a year as the investigation proceeds. prosecutors say that their case is already at an advanced stage. mola lenghi is covering tonight in santo domingo. >> reporter: police in the dominican republic continue to search for at least three suspects believed to be involved in the shooting of former boston red sox star david ortiz, described by investigators as a nearly $8,000 hit job. 10 suspects are currently in custody, seen here in this exclusive cbs news video being transferred one by one from jail to a court hearing in santo domingo on friday. one of the defense attorneys insists there's no evidence against his client. the alleged gunman, rolfy ferreyra cruz, spoke from the window of his holding cell thursday, telling reporters ortiz was not the intended target. "it wasn't for david," cruz said.

ortiz is currently recovering after a second surgery in boston. dr. jose abel gonzalez, who operated on ortiz the night he was shot, says he should make a full recovery, adding he was happy he could help the dominican hero. >> i've never seen my daughter, my 10-year-old daughter, be so proud of her father as when she found out i was taking care of big papi. >> reporter: investigators here in santo domingo have determined a motive in the shooting but have yet to make it public, though we are told they plan to release that information by next week. reena. >> ninan: mola lenghi. thanks, mola. this was a rough day for last- minute father's day shoppers at target stores. there were long lines as a system-wide failure shut down registers across the country for two hours. with cashiers unable to ring up sales, customers went home empty-handed. target apologized for the inconvenience, handing out snacks at some stores. lawmakers in washington grappled this week with how to prevent what are known as deepfake videos. these manipulated images can

pose a very real national security threat. chief national security pondent jeff pegues shows us how. >> reporter: in this video, facebook founder mark zuckerberg appeared to be boasting about his social media platform's control over people's personal data. >> imagine this for a second: one man with total control of billions of people's stolen data. >> reporter: but this is deepfake video, meaning that zuckerberg's voice was manipulated, as was cbs news streaming service cbsn's trademark. cbs has asked facebook to take down the video, which is still viewable. >> they have the capacity to disrupt entire campaigns. >> reporter: both democrat and republican lawmakers say deepfake videos contributing to the spread of disinformation and have the potential to sow mistrust among voters leading up to the 2020 elections. in a hearing this week, former f.b.i. agent clint watts warned about who may be most at risk.

>> the audience i'm most worried about is actually not young people on social media. it is the older generation, whose come to this technology late, that doesn't really understand. >> reporter: deepfakes seek to confuse and mislead. in this widely disseminated example, former president barack obama's voice has been altered. >> ben carson is in the sunken place. >> reporter: with actor jordan peele's voice. hany farid who is a professor of computer science at the university of california berkeley says it's serious. >> what if somebody creates a video of president trump saying i've launched nuclear weapons against iran or north korea or russia and we don't have hours or days to figure out if it's really real not. >> reporter: u.s. officials view deepfakes as a real national security threat. david doermann was a project manager at darpa. in 2017, the secret defense department agency was in the process of trying to develop technology to identify manipulated video posted on social media.

>> so they could target individuals, individual communities with different types of content very easily, and that's what's scary. >> reporter: lawmakers in washington believe social media companies should do more to prevent deepfake videos. the risk is the more common they become, people will have a hard time believing their eyes and ears, even when the information they are being given is real. reena. >> ninan: jeff pegues in washington. and here in new york, the n.y.p.d. is a police force shaken by suicide. the death of an officer yesterday is the third suspected suicide in just 10 days. and as kenneth craig reports, it's a growing problem, not just here, but nationwide. >> reporter: the most recent suicide, right outside the precinct on new york's staten island, was a six-year veteran of the force, 29-year-old officer michael caddy. the tragedy, the police commissioner said in a statement is part of "a mental health crisis," and that law

enforcement as a whole "absolutely must take action." earlier this month, two other members of the department died by suicide, one a respected chief, the other an experienced detective. >> cops have to know that there's-- there are avenues for help, and it's not-- it's not a weakness to ask for help. it's a strength. >> reporter: the three deaths are part of a disturbing trend nationwide. last year, at least 167 officers died by suicide. that's more than the number who died in the line of duty, according to massachusetts nonprofit blue help. after a string of police suicides in chicago earlier this year, cbs news rode along with the police chaplain into chicago's most violent neighborhoods, trying to reach out to vulnerable officers before it's too late. >> officers don't want to go home and burden their spouse with the ugliness they've encountered the last eight or 10 hours. these officers see more evil in the course of a 10-hour tour than most anybody sees in a lifetime. >> reporter: so far, just this

year, 93 officers nationwide have died by suicide. reena, that's already on track to exceed last year. >> ninan: clearly something we've got to do about this. kenneth craig, thank you. well, hundreds of thousands of people lined the streets of st. louis today for a parade honoring the stanley cup champion blues. players took turns hoisting the cup in the air. they celebrated the first championship in their 52-year history. the parade ended with a rally beneath the gateway arch. coming up, an inside look at driverless ubers. and meet a farmer benefiting from the china trade war. war. pedestrian. >> driving down make-believe lane is what uber hopes is a very real future. he blew a stop sign. this is uber's self-driving test track in pittsburgh. we took a ride with the project's chief scientist raquel urtasun. is this car as good of a driver as the average human is? >> uh, not yet. >> reporter: on this 54-acre, closely guarded facility, uber is building its return to autonomous driving after the march 2018 crash where a self- driving uber hit and killed a woman crossing a street in tempe, arizona. eric meyhofer leads uber's autonomous driving unit.ni after uber's fatal accident, the number of people who said they were afraid to drive in a self- driving car rose to 71%, up from 63% a year ago. do you think the improvements to the technology are such that, that kind of accident wouldn't happen again? >> i think that, yes. it's a little enthusiastic and maybe presumptuous to think that there will never be an accident in a self-driving car. it's inevitable, and there will

california garlic on your hands. >> reporter: it's a point of pride for ken christopher. christopher farms is the nation's largest garlic grower and just one of three u.s. producers. a glut of cheaper chinese imports in recent years has put nine others out of business. >> since 1993, chinese exporters have defrauded the u.s. government and flooded the market with over $600 million of dumped chinese garlic. >> reporter: garlic growers are among the few in agriculture benefiting from the president's economic attack on china, imposing on june 15 a 25% tariff on $200 billion worth of goods coming into the u.s. shoppers will find u.s. garlics more expensive, even with the tariff, but the price difference will soon be smaller. >> i predict with a 25% increase in tariffs, we're going to see a 25% increase in demand for california garlic, and that means we're going to invest in infrastructure. we're going to invest in additional acreage. we're going to invest in more jobs. >> reporter: while garlic

california when they were 10 to chase the american dream, which for newly arrived immigrants meant picking grapes in the fields. >> we hated it, but we start to realize that we were doing this for a specific reason, and it was to help our family, to help each other. >> reporter: and their parents head them. their mother introduced them to the town library, showing them how education was the most valuable currency. >> every single time i entered that library, it was-- i was entering a different world. by reading a different book, it gave me the imagination to be somewhere else. >> reporter: somewhere else but also grounded in their studies. the twins aced their classes, graduating high school, and sharing the coveted title of valedictorian. octavio went to harvard undergrad, omar off to u.c. san diego, both on full scholarships. then graduate school and the decision to become doctors. what was that moment like when you received your letter from harvard, you received your

letter from u.c.l.a., saying, "congratulations, you've been accepted into med school." >> when i saw that u.c.l.a. had offered me a admission, full- ride scholarship, i was very ecstatic. >> why would they pick someone from a small town of 5,000 people to go to harvard mlt school? i remember refreshing the page, i guess making sure that it was addressed to the right person, to me. >> reporter: do you reflect on the sacrifices they've made so that you can live this life that you're living now? >> i take that seriously, and that's why every day i wake up and i think how can i-- what can i do today to make myself better, my family better, and my community? >> reporter: the power of a dream planted at a young age. jonathan vigliotti, cbs news, los angeles. >> ninan: and the brothers will begin hospital residencies next month. we wish both of them the best of luck. and that's the "cbs weekend news" for this saturday. we leave you tonight at notre dame in paris where priests in hard hats celebrate the first mass since the devastating fire exactly two months ago.

we begin with that breaking news and contra costa county. and our reporter is live where the firefighters say that illegal fireworks sparked a very close call. >> reporter: as you can see the fire has now been put out. it started around 2:50 pm this afternoon and started on this side of the street and slowly started spreading set out on this dryland. it burned about two acres underneath these power lines. some homes were damaged and the fire burned down the fence on the homes over there and the flames crawled around the last home on the block and towards the side wall of the end unit. we want to go to some video that was shot earlier today. the play started around 2:15 pm this afternoon and they say it started as a grass fire and moved toward the homes. firefighters are telling us tonight kids playing with the firework are to blame.
