cargo ship in pennsylvania. why some investigators say more drugs could still be onboard. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, new information is emerging this morning about why acting defense secretary patrick shanahan dropped his bid to leave the pentagon. the news came to light as part of a background investigation ahead of a confirmation hearing. david martin reports from the pentagon. >> reporter: patrick shanahan and his wife kimberly divorced eight years ago, a year after a run-in with police which began with this 911 call. >> my husband's throwing punches at me. >> according to court documents he denied that, claiming she punched him, giving him a bloody nose. when the police arrived, she was charged with assault and the charges later dismissed.

after the divorce, fights over money and custody of the three children continued. in 2017 his 17-year-old son beat his mother with a baseball bat. i was knocked unconscious twice, adding that her ex-husband has taken the position i have provoked the assault. the documents were all public when he was nominated secretary of defense in 2017, but a member of the senate armed services committee says they were never told. >> that there was something in this nominee's past, patrick shanahan's past, that was deliberately concealed or mistakenly covered up. >> reporter: two white house officials told cbs news they knew about shanahan's family turmoil when the president announced last month he would nominate him as secretary of defense. president trump says he just

found out. >> i heard about it yesterday for the first time. >> reporter: announcing his sii confirmation process would force my three children to relive a chapter in their life, a sad story, leaving this country without a secretary of defense. >> to have no secretary of defense at this time is appalling and it shows the chaos in this administration. >> reporter: the president says he will probably nominate the current secretary of the army, mark esper, to be the next secretary of defense. he happens to be a west point classmate of secretary of state mike pompeo. david martin, cbs news, the pentagon. president trump officially kicked off his 2020 campaign with a vow to keep america great. last night mr. trump addressed tens of thousands of supporters in orlando, florida. he was joined by the first lady, vice president mike pence, and donald trump jr.

the president used the rally to lash out against democrats. laura podesta is in florida. laura, what did the president have to say about his rivals? >> he accused the democrats of targeting him since his first day of office, he slammed at what he calls the fake news media, and he took aim at his 2016 rival hillary clinton, but his overall message, he's the best pick to serve a second term. >> keep america great. >> president trump made it official last night, kicking off his 2020 re-election bid at a packed rally in orlando. >> i stand before you to officially launch my campaign for a second term as president of the united states. >> the president hit on some of the same themes he used during his successful 2016 campaign including illegal immigration.

secretary of state mike pompeo met with central command leaders in florida on countering threats from iran following last week's attacks of two oil tankers in the gull of oman. united arab emirates. s from the >> president trump doesn't want war, and we'll do the things necessary to protect the american interests in the region. >> reporter: but protecting american interests means boosting american troops, something that has only added to tensions. iranian president hassan rouhani does not seek war with any nation but is that we're in a face jaf with america. china warned the u.s. against opening a pandora's box and along with russia called for restraint, fearing an escalation of hostilities. the pentagon won't say where exactly the 1,000 troops will be sent. the u.s. already has a

significant u.s. military presence in this region, around 35,000 members manning warships, air bases, and ground operations. iran's regional arch cheevl saudi arabia is stepping up the pressure, too, releasing video showing joint exercises with u.s. jet fighters over the persian gulf, a show of force showing an unmistakable message to iran. scenes of some of america's alleys appear skeptical. france and germany remain unconvince and even here in the uae, they're stopping short of actually naming iran as the culprit. charlie d'agata, cbs news, in few jair rah, the united arab emirates. today they're voting to discuss a third migration of the southern border. yesterday senate republicans and democrats reached a deal on $4.6

billion in emergency funds to deal with the crisis. democrats have assured the funding will not be used to pay for mr. trump's border wall or pay for raids on illegal immigrants in the u.s. earlier this week president trump announced in a tweet a massive deportation campaign targeting millions of people. >> when people come into our country and they come in illegally, they have to go out. >> the house plans to vote on a separate border package next week. today the house judiciary committee is expected to interview former white house communications director hope hicks behind closed doors. it's the first time lawmakers will hear from a person linked to from president's inner circle since the release of special counsel robert mueller's report. it's unclear how much information she will provide. she already cooperated with mueller's probe. and president trump's nominee to serve as ambassador to the u.n. will face the u.n.

this morning. kelly craft is currently the u.n. ambassador to canada. she would replace nikki haley who resigned her post at the end of last year. today investigators will continue to search a cargo ship in pennsylvania where authorities made one of the largest cocaine busts in u.s. history. yesterday they raided the ship at the port of philadelphia and they seized 33,000 pounds of cocaine, which has a street value of more than $1 billion. two people were arrested. investigators say more drugs could be onboard. before coming to philadelphia, the ship was in the bahamas, panama, peru, and colombia. coming up on the "morning news" now, lawmakers on capitol hill address slavery reputations at a hearing on juneteenth. and a former champ makes a donation to charity. this is the "cbs morning news." this is the "cbs morning news." should be. and order online for delivery right to you. panera. food as it should be.

on monday the five fishermen were about 30 miles from shore nearing the end of a day of fishing at sea. that's when the sharkttacked thg hanging off the boat. the shark eventually swam away. a former "jeopardy" champion makes a donation to charity and lawmakers make slavery reparations. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. "fortune" reports a hearing will held on capitol hill. a house judiciary subcommittee will meet to discuss a slavery reparations bill. it would establish a commission to study the history of slavery in the u.s., and the lasting ramifications of slavery on african-americans. yesterday senate majority leader mitch mcconnell said he opposes

reparations partly because it would be hard to know who to compensate. >> i don't think reparations for people living 150 years ago today is a good idea. >> today's hearing is being held on juneteenth. it commemorates the abolition of slavery in tex on june 19th, 1965. amoan those to testify are journalist ta any hee she coats, danny glover, and senator cory booker. there are talks about the unanimously to approve the ban to crack down the "san francisco chronicle" reports the city is a step closer to becoming the first u.s. city to ban all e-cigarette sales. yesterday the san francisco board of supervisors voted unanimously to approve the ban to crack down on under age vaping. the bill still requires approval from the board. if passed by voters, it would override that ban. and the "chicago tribune" says recent "jeopardy" champ

nasdaq soared 108 points. meanwhile america airlines will hear concerns. american airlines pilots union is expected to express concern about whether training materials and updates for the 737 max will be sufficient.eing's737 max fleet following two deadly crashes within months of each other. boeing also announced it made a deal with the british airway's company of 200 max jets. and u.s.-based airlines boasted their profits are up. it's up 25% from the same period last year. the profit coming thanks in large part to baggage fees and other secondary charges. airlines have collected more than a billion collars in the months of 2019. last year, american, delta, united, and jetblue raised their fees to $30, and $40 for the

raising safety concerns. mola lenghi is there with what we know and what remains a his industry. >> reporter: the series of deaths at luxury resorts have raised questions about the i lament's safety. 55-year-old joseph allen of ave knell, new jersey, is the latest death. he died earlier this week. authorities have not said how. here's what we know so far. seven tourists have died on the island of nonaccidental causes. five of them had similar symptoms of pulmonary edema, fluid in the lungs, and respiratory failure. what we don't know is what caused those symptoms. the fbi is conducting their own toxicology tests on three of the deaths. two others have been deemed natural causes, both heart attacks by island medical officials. a tropical paradise in the dominican, the dominican republic is a vacation sport.
