good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, we begin with new developments overnight concerning a drone shoot-down that could raise tensions between the u.s. and iran. iran's revolutionary guard says they shot down a u.s. drone over their airspace. the u.s. says it was in international airspace. the drone was shot down this morning. they say it happened over the strait of hormuz. they struck it down with an air-to-surface missile. the white house is closely monitored the situation. the drone incident comes after last week's attack on two oil tankers in the gulf of oman, a major transit route for global oil supplies. iran denies those accusations, and this weekend washington

announced it was sending another 1,000 u.s. troops to the middle east. they say the move was in response to what was described as hostile iranian forces. now back at home, more than 52 million americans are in the path of severe weather that will re main a threat through the weekend. it's feared that damaging flash flooding in some areas. flooding and a pocket of hail and tornado are possible as well. yesterday widespread damage was left behind after a possible tornado touched down in greenville, texas. it also caused damage to the downtown area. no reports of injuries throw. heavy rain caused flooding in ohio. floodwaters came rushing into the emergency room of a hospital. patients were taken to other nearby hospitals and ugent care facilities. they are all expected to be okay. democratic presidential candidate joe biden is refusing to apologize for comments he made about working with civility with segregationist lawmakers. the former vice president made the comments at a fund-raising event this week. biden was referencing a time when he first got to the senate. the comments are drawing

criticism from within his own party. laura podesta is here with more from new york. laura, what's the latest? >> there's been a lot of backlash. senator elizabeth warren says i'm not here to criticize other democrats, but it's never okay to agree with seg gagists. kamala harris says she's disappointed and biden is defending himself. former vice president joe biden says he has nothing to be sorry about. >> there's not a racist bone in my body. i've been involved in civil rights my whole career, period, period, period. >> he was discussing his earlier years in washington when he worked alongside eastland of mississippi and herman talmadge of georgia. biden said, quote, things got done and with civility. his remarks prompted another

white house candidate new jersey senator/presidential candidate cory booker to demand an apol y apology. >> apologize for what? cory should apologize. he knows better. >> last night booker said someone who aspires to presidency should know better. >> i was raised to speak truth to power and that i should never apologize for doing that, and vice president biden shouldn't need this lesson. >> biden insists that his comments were taken out of context. >> i ran for the united states senate because i disagreed with the views of the segregationists, many of them senators at the time. >> kamala harris said biden was coddling his former colleagues' reputations. >> the senators that he is speak of with such adoration are individuals who made and built their reputation on segregation.

slugger david ortiz was mistak the real target was his friend who was wearing similar clothing at the time of the shooting earlier this month. chris martinez reports. >> reporter: the shooting of former boston red sox baseball star david ortiz at point blank range was never supposed to happen, according to prosecutors and the dominican republic. the object was not david ortiz, the attorney general said. it was another man who was seated with ortiz and wearing a similar outfit. prosecutors say the intended target was a friend of ortiz who attended the bar regularly on saturdays. dominican authorities laid out the chain of command and said a member of the gulf cartel orchestrated the hit. he remains on the run. 11 are being held. rolf y ferreya ortiz says it

wasn't for david. dominican authorities say they're still looking for at least three more suspects. they say all of the suspects will spend a year behind bars as the investigation continues. chris martinez, cbs news, los angeles. 72 pennsylvania police officers are on administrative duty this morning for alleged racist and violent posts. the philadelphia commissioner says he believes several dozen people would be disciplined and he expected some would be fired. >> it makes me sick to be honest with you. it really makes me sick because we're in a position to know better. >> a national group accuses officers in at least five states of offensive social media posts. president trump is lashing out at democrats following hope hicks' testimony before the house judiciary committee. yesterday the president said he heard democrats were taking pictures of hicks during her closed door testimony. hicks, once one of trump's

officials say there's no danger after a train carrying bombs, grenades, and hazardous materials derailed on its way to an army depot in northeast nevada. yesterday more than 20 cars of the union pacific train went off the track, forcing an interstate to be shut down for hours. some nonhazardous materials did spill out. no one was hurt. there are new arrests in a major cocaine busts, and missouri's abortion clinic is taking a stand. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. cbsnews.com reports missouri's only abortion clinic is one step closer to losing its license. planned parenthood of st. louis told cbs news exclusively it is planning to defy state law and will no longer perform two

pelvic exams before an abortion procedure. planned parenthood doctors say the medical exam is medically decid wheth renew the planned parenthood abortion license. >> we're choosing to provide the best care and quality we've also palways provided at planne parenthood. that includes doing things that are driven by science, by evidence, and by what's medically appropriate. >> missouri says planned parenthood has violated state laws and regulations. a recent annual inspection cited planned parenthood for 30 deficiencies. the "philadelphia inquirer" says four more crew members were arrested in connection with the 16-on the drug seizure. on monday federal agents discovered the drugs in seven shipping containers. the street value of the drugs is estimated to be more than a billion dollars. it's one of the largest drug busts in u.s. history.

here's a look at the forecast in some cities around the country. a revolver believed to have been used by vincent van gogh to kill himself has been sold at auction. the weapon was discovered in the 1960s in the fields of northern france. that's where the dutch artist is thought to have shot himself in the chest in 1890. yesterday an anonymous buyer paid $145,000 for a gun at a paris auction.

an alaskan teenager has been charged with killing her best friend. the murder plot began online with a promise of a multi-million-dollar payday. carter evans has the story. >> reporter: in court 18-year-old denali brehmer showed no emotion as she appeared to admit her role in an elaborate plot to murder her friend cynthia hoffman. investigators say it all began with a bizarre downline catfishing scheme designed by darin schilmillel in indiana. without ever meeting her, he allegedly led her to believe he was a multi-millionaire named tyler enticing her with a million dollars. brehmer offered to pay some of the money with four other teens to help her plan and carry out the killing. according to the criminal complaint on june 2nd, brehmer and 16-year-old kayden macintosh took hoffman on a hike where

they allegedly duct taped her and shot her in the head and dumped her in the river. >> i'm going to seek justice and i'm going to follow this to the full extent of the law and i'll be here every time she is, and i will not let it go. >> reporter: police found hoffman's body a day later and the scheme began to unravel, leading them to brehmer, macintosh, and the other teens involved. brehmer's phone records revealed schilmiller in indiana. authorities say their arrest should be a warning. >> if you're planning to conduct a crime in alaska and you think you're safe because you're that far away, you're not. we will track you down, we will find you, and we will bring you back here to face justice. >> reporter: schilmiller and brehmer are also charged with child porn counts.
