>> reporter: police audio captures the sound of gun shots ringing out during a eight-hour stand off with a man on thursday afternoon. >> officer down. officer down. >> reporter: tara o'sullivan was killed while responding to a domestic violence call at the home. >> we are devastated tonight. there are no words to convey the deping of sadness we feel or how heart broken we are for our family of our young, brave officer. >> reporter: she had been on the job for less than six months. she was working with a training officer. police say she was helping a woman collect her belongings to leave the home when she was shot. >> i cannot believe a rescue can be accomplished yet until we lock down where she's at. >> reporter: it took place nearly an hour before they could get to officer o'sullivan because the gunman continued shooting. >> we have the officer out. >> enroute to uc davis. >> reporter: the young officer

died hours later. investigators say the gunman remained holed up in the home, randomly firing shots before he surrendered. >> a whies hearse carrying officer o'sullivan left uc davis medical center around 12:30 this morning. hundreds of law enforcement and first responders trailing behind it, paying their respects. >> reporter: i'm jackie ward at college park high school where the officer attended. she granted from here in 2011. law enforcement agencies across the bay area expressed condolences for the young officer this morning. the police officer's association posted that the 26-year-old served as a police explorer before leaving to attend college and beginning her career with the police department. tara o'sullivan will be

remembered as a vibrant servant who rose through the ranks and served the community with purpose. she was taken from us too soon and she will be missed. after granting from college park, she went to college at sacramento state. the school's president said i am devastated this junction promising life was lost to such violence. our hearts go out. she will be remembered for intelligence, commitment to public service and bravery. and the concord police department said, rest in peace, sister. you are a hero. the flag here at college park is flying at half staff. so are the flags for the police departments. and governor newsome released a statement saying the officer represented the best of what we hope to be as human beings and her selfless service to the community and readyness
