>> dubois: and one of these astronauts could be the first woman on the moon. but how would they choose? >> we have been honing our rock, paper, scissors skills. >> dubois: good evening. i'm maurice dubois. this is our western edition. president trump called new sanctions on iran hard-hitting. and this time he's taking direct aim at iran's supreme leader, ayatollah ali khomeini. the measures approved today are in part a response to iran's downing of a u.s. drone last week. the goal is to squeeze iran's economy further to get it to drop its nuclear program. paula reid has more on how the onctions will work. >> never can iran have a nuclear neapon. >> reporter: president trump is increasing pressure on iran by blocking supreme leader ayatollah ali khomeini and other top officials from using international banking systems. >> sanctions imposed through the orecutive order that i'm about to sign will deny the supreme

leader and the supreme leader's office and those closely h hiliated with him and the office access to key financial resources and support. >> reporter: also targeted, eight iranian military commanders the trump administration says were responsible for shooting down a u.s. drone last week. iran's economy has already been strangled by u.s. sanctions on its oil industry and other targets. these new sanctions may only have a minimal impact as top nranian officials likely do not keep significant assets in teternational banks. last week the president approved and then called off military strikes against iran in n taliation for both the drone strike and attacks on two tankers in the strait of hormuz. the administration has not taken military action off the table, hat president trump has signaled a preference to respond with financial penalties. >> so america's a peace-loving nation. we do not seek conflict with iran or any other country. >> reporter: today president trump urged the iranian regime

to come to the negotiating table. s i think they should do that rather than going along this hiry destructive path, pstructive for everybody. ran'eporter: iran's foreign minister, javad zarif, will also soce sanctions. he tweeted today, "trump administration officials are not concerned with the u.s. interests. they despise diplomacy and thirst for war." >> dubois: paula, so alongside the sanctions, what is the u.s. doing about those attacks on all the ships? >> reporter: maurice, the tesident wants a coalition of ontions to help with that. earlier today he tweeted that cuntries like china and japan should be protecting their own ships. secretary of state mike pompeo is now trying to recruit allies to escort some ships and outfit others with cameras and monitoring equipment so they can document threats. >> dubois: okay, paula reid at the white house tonight, thank you. the u.s. government has now removed most of the more than 300 migrant children who were found last week living in aualor at a border protection facility in texas.

omar villafranca has more now from the u.s.-mexican border. >> reporter: lawyers say ntndreds of migrant children were forced to sleep on the floor for weeks without enough ndod, in this customs and border protection facility in clint, texas, just outside of el paso. >> it is degrading and inhumane and shouldn't be happening in america. >> reporter: elora mukherjee is part of the team of lawyers who visited the facility. >> during that time many of the children had not had access to a single shower or bath. they were wearing the same dirty clothing that they crossed the border with. >> reporter: cbs news confirmed this afternoon roughly 300 of the children at the clint facility were moved to other sites. the conditions also shocked federal judges in the ninth circuit. justice department attorney sarah fabian argued that in shorter stays in c.b.c. custody, basic necessities might not be required. >> if you don't have a toothbrush, if you don't have soap, if you don't have a

blanket, it's not safe and sanitary, wouldn't everybody agree to that? >> well, i think those are... there's fair reason to find that those things may be part of-- >> not may be. are. >> reporter: on "face the nation," vice president mike pence said the democratically controlled house must move on a humanitarian bill. >> we've asked for more bed space. ni've asked for more support. our customs and border patrol agents are doing a job, but the system is overwhelmed. >> reporter: in south texas's rio grande valley, the summer heat may have claimed the lives of four migrants in hidalgo county. between october 1997 and september 2018, border patrol says more than 7500 migrants have died along the southwestern border, but the number only rcludes reported deaths and could be much higher. this area where the bodies were found is known as devil's corner cacause of the oppressive heat and because it's tucked away.

and luckily no one was inside. further south, a thunderstorm flooded cape girardeau, missouri, today, and in houston, auhome caught fire after it was hit by lightning. everybody, though, made it out .afely. we are learning more tonight about the 11 people who were killed friday night when a skydiving plane crashed and burned in hawaii. it went down shortly after take- off on the island of oahu. jonathan vigliotti is there. >> reporter: those who saw the skydiving plane plummet to the iound looked on in horror, all er on board were killed. >> what a shame. t saw it hit. mawas right there, man. i was right there. >> reporter: carlos zapato drove denver tourists brian and ashley weikel to the doomed flight. they were celebrating their one- year wedding anniversary. >> if you knew them for five minutes or five years, they touched your life. you couldn't ask for two better people in your life. >> reporter: the n.t.s.b. have their work cut out for them. the impact of the crash and the massive fire afterward reduced

>> dubois: jonathan vigliotti in hawaii tonight. police in chicago released video today from the jussie smollett case that includes body camera aotage of the actor wearing a noose around his neck as he told officers he was the victim of a hate crime in january. investigators later determined smollett staged the attack, but prosecutors dismissed the charges against him. geere is breaking news from los angeles. the dodgers have just said they intend to extend protective netting at dodger stadium. this is after another fan was ayruck by a foul ball yesterday. chip reid has more on this. >> the 1-2 comes home. >> reporter: it happened again sunday, a line drive foul ball hit a woman in the head at dodger stadium. she was taken to the hospital thatollows vicious line drive in may by albert almora in lmuston that struck a four-year- old girl in the head. distraught, almora dropped to his knees. luckily the girl was okay. line drive injuries gained

attention after a woman was killed by a foul ball at dodger stadium last year. all 30 major league teams have protective netting from home plate to at least the end of the dugouts. tw two teams, the chicago white sox and the washington nationals, say they will extend their netting all the way to or close to the right and left field foul poles. physics professor eric goff of the university of lynchburg. l> a ball coming off a scorching liner into the stands is going to come off a bat at over 100mph. .nd it will travel 130 feet in about a second. >> reporter: dodging a rocket like that, he says, is difficult at best, especially for a young child. the force of impact, goff says, is like having a ten-pound weight dropped on your head from haheight of more than six feet. here at nationals park, they're planning to use the all-star break to extend this netting almost all the way to the

>> dubois: the driver of a pickup truck that plowed into a group of ten motorcycles in new t mpshire was charged today with negligent homicide. the 23-year-old man was arrested at his home in massachusetts. seven people were killed in the fiery wreck friday night. they were members of a motorcycle club for marines and their spouses. we're learning more tonight about a university of utah student who went missing a week ago. salt lake city police said today 23-year-old mackenzie lueck was last seen meeting an unknown person at a park at 3:00 a.m. after a lyft driver dropped her off. police say there is no evidence lueck is in danger. and now some news about this broadcast. norah o'donnell takes over as anchor and managing editor july 15th. norah will also serve as lead anchor for cbs news political
