san jose. jackie? >> reporter: people woke up to bullet holes in their car like this one after police say lo activity.d to kill >> reporter: the sheriff's office tells us about 10:20 last night, people on this part of richmond avenue in san jose heard gun shots andpeed off. >> i heard a person yell, ow, really loud. i called the sheriff's department. >> reporter: there have been two or three shootings in the area in the last two to three years. >> if you're in bed and hear the shots, the bullets can fly through walls. >> reporter: he got home and his girlfriend heard the gunshots. >> ichs three minutes removed from the situation. you think back. a couple of minutes here or there. >> reporter: the sheriff's

office obtained surveillance footage that shows a man confronting a man and the suspect chases the victim out of camera range. shortly after, the suspect and victim get in view of the camera. both the victim and the suspect take offer running. the victim running across the street into a backyard and hopping the fence. the suspect or suspects remain at large. >> it's unnerving living up the street from a shooting. twice in two years. strange. >> reporter: the victim has not come forward yet and the sheriff's office says the public is not at risk. jackie ward, i piks 5. we're following breaking news in palo alto. a death investigation is understand way after a man's body was found by his roommate at a mobile home park. police do not have a suspect in

custody. they are not actively look for a suspect. and a traffic alert. the trailer fire blocking a westbound lane of highway 37 in marin county. flames engulfed this 40 foot trailer near lakeville highway. it was reported around 9:15 this morning. no injuries reported. it's unclear how the fire started. let's take a look at the traffic map. you can see where the fire is happening. it's down to 16 miles in the westbound direction of highway 37. your option instead is 121 north and then eventually hit 101 that way. and this crash briefly closed down the three right lanes on i-280 just south of stevens creek. the big rig slammed into a lexus and caused a chain reaction. awoman is ropt hospitalized. and a man was taken to a burn center after a fire the aa motel 6 in freemont about 6:00

a.m. chopper 5 flew over the scene as fire crews taped off the area. it's not clear what caused the fire and no word on the condition. happening today, san francisco could become the first city in the country to block the sale of e-cigarettes. the board of supervisors takes a vote today. the moratorium would take effect in seven months after signed by the mayor and continue until the fda reviewing the safety of the products. and leaders will decide the fate of the navigation center. people say leaders skipped steps to push the plan through and will bring crime to the neighborhood. the mayor approached the center to address the homelessness crisis. she hopes to get it up and running this year. and state officials cracking

down on gun control. the governor says starting next week, all californians need a background check for ammunition. >> this does not deny people the right to purchase ammunition. it's what we're already doing for guns and makes it a a semiprocess for ammunition at point of sale. >> the governor says the problem is not guns that kill people, it's the ammo. it will cost $1 every time a purchase is made. the new law will go in effect next monday. and new at noon, the acting customs and border protection commissioner is stepping down. john sanders will resign on july 5th. house lawmakers could vote at any moment on a $4 and a half billion aid package for the boarder e. and runs of migrant children were moved over concerns of unsanitary conditions. >> it's not immigration. it's an appropriations bill to

oakland. chopper 5 captured images of crews working next to a crane that air lifted the equipment. the new mri can scan organs and bones better and faster. the medical facility is the primary provider to the low income community. the new and upgraded equipment is set to provide life saving sfsz services for more than 7,000 patients a year. and the instagram ceo is speaking out about the deeptakes and he is not taking them down. >> right now, we try to balance safety and speech. and that balance is really, really tricky. but honestly, right now, the most important thing to focus on is getting to the content quicker. once we can do that, we can have the next debate about whether or not to take it down. >> deepfakes get a lot of attention after this video went

victim to scams. >> reporter: the ftc is announcing a major crack down, including 94 actions targeting operations around the country they say are responsible for more than 1 billion calls. >> it is an extremely important issue. we feel pressure externally and internally and we want to rise to it. >> reporter: companies targeted in the actions were using robocalls to pitch everything from bogus credit card interest rate reductions to fraudulent money making opportunities and medical alert systems. do you think you can fix it? what they're doing is illegal and comes from overseas. how do you even stop that? >> so today, announcing operation call it quits is part of the solution. it's not the whole of the solution. it will take engagement from industry and technological

investment. and the hope is for the combined efforts, we can help push back. >> reporter: experts applaud the joint law enforcement efforts, but say the dampening effect may be temporary. alex is ceo of the call ablocking company you mail. >> there's a crack down on enforcement, you see fewer robocalls from the people cracked down on. and they're replaced by someone else. >> it feels like whack a mole for us. but we are stopping a substantial number of cases and unwanted calls. that's important to me. >> the defendants in some of the cases have had assets frozen and others will pay fines up to $2 e sunshine? for a while.
