candidates are going to be battling it out on night one of the debate. coming up, what you should know ahead of tonight's showdown. good morning from the studios 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. tom hanson is here in new york. tom, as i understand it, mueller did not want to testify, so ultimately why did he agree to do so? >> well, anne-marie, the house committee subpoenaed mueller. he says he does not want to fight the subpoenas. mueller is expected to appear before tin public before two panels and it's the first time he'll answer regarding president trump's campaign.

now, the committees have been in negotiations with mueller for weeks about his testimony, and mueller's only public statement about his 448-page report was last month when he said the report should speak for itself. now, president trump responded to last night's news with presidential harassment. mr. trump has said the mueller report completely exonerated him, and in a letter to mueller, democratic lawmakers said, quote, american voters deserve to hear directly from you about the investigation and its

unable to prentd himself. they believe he tried to cross the river with his child when the current swept them away. the house has addressed a bill. the bill contains funds to shelter and feed migrants at the border control and also to provide money to care for migrant children. it also seeks to mandate improved standards of care. house speaker nancy pelosi says the bill is far better than a recent senate bill. >> it still does not fund the administration's mass detention

policy. instead it funds alternatives that have a proven record of success. >> the fight over funding comes amid yet another shake upin the trump administration, this time involving the agencies that oversees the agencies and the border. jeff pegues reports. >> reporter: as they're under fire, acting customs announced his resignation. they're currently without a permanent leader. president trump has not forced him out. >> i never spoke with him. we have good people running it. >> he said he was concerned about the border facilities. >> it's in much better shape than it was. >> lawyers who have visited an

overcrowded facility in clint, texas, disagree. >> many have not had access to a single shower or bath. they were wearing the same dirty clothing they crossed the border with. >> in response, cdp moved more than 300 children out of the facility and then announced 100 children would be going back. one official told reporters, i personally don't believe these allegations. current acting head of ice will be taking over at cdp. he told us he also disagrees with similar reports about egregious conditions at i.c.e. facilities. >> i'm don't agree. >> what word would you use. >> you can always try to get better b tow say it's a systemic egregious problem across the board, that's not true. >> morgan like president trump placed much of the blame on

congress for inaction. >> we've been asking congress for long time. i think every american can agree with that. >> that was jeff pegues reporting. the first demographic debate kicks off tonight in miami. because of the record number of candidates, the debate will be split into two nights. ten candidates will take the stage tonight and another ten will beda will debate tomorrow night. what are they expected to uk ta about? >> hey, anne-marie. they're excelling to talk about immigration policy and climate change and tensions with iran. because this is a debate, we expect they will take plenty of jabs at each other. it comes into play tonight in miami. for your the neck two nights the leading candidates will scare off in a two-part debate. >> a lot of the voters won't

know who most of them are. it's going to be a little bit about who are you and getting recognition and getting a sound bite. >> ten will go at it tonight and the o'ten on thursday. it's an unusually large field of hopefuls. >> the stage will be crowded. so the opportunity for a candidate to break through will be pretty slim. you're not going to get a lot of time. >> the candidates chosen for tonight were picked at random and only one of them tonight has consistently polled in the top five. >> i they're elizabeth warren will have an advantage because she's one of the only ones on the one-night panel, so she has a chance to dam nate. >> one common theme is expected to emerge. >> they're going to talk a lot about trump. one thing they're going to try to do is make the case that

they're the one that should go out. >> four candidates did not qualify for the debates. and to qualify for these debates, they had to reach at least 1% in three different polls. they also had to receive 65,000 individual donations from people in at least 20 states. anne-marie. >> laura podesta in miami. thank you. this morning two u.s. servicemembers were killed in afghanistan. details about the circumstances of their deaths were not released. the killings brings the total number of deaths in afghanistan this year to sick. according to government officials, there have been at least 65 since 2015. they come a day after the secretary of state mike pompeo made a visit to the afghan capital of kabul. the u.s. is holding talks to secure a peace deal to end america's longest running war of nearly 18 years.

people in chicago took cover wherever they could as the storm dumped heavy rain and hail the size of a quarter over parts of the city. yesterday's storm also carried 60-mile-per-hour winds. dozens of flights were canceled at o'hare and midway airplane. a new white house press secretary was named. those are ome of the headlines on the morning newsstand. stephanie grisham will be the new white house press secretary. grisham will replace sarah sanders. she takes over nextmond, but will travel with president trump on a five-day trip to asia starting today. she'll also fill the vacant pcaf white house communications director. he said grisham has been with

him from the very beginning. >> i had so many people. who do you like. a lot of people wanted the job. i asked them. and so many people said stephanie. >> during sanders' time as press secretary, she phased out news briefings. the "washington post" reports senate majority leader mitch mcconnell told a group of first responders that the senate is working to renew the 9/11 victims compensation fund by august. yesterday he met with the first responders at the capitol. earlier this month during an emotional hearing comedian jon stewart pleaded with the counsel to renew the fund. alvarez is suffering from stage 4 cancer and is now in hospice. he was unable to attend yesterday's meeting with mcconnell. >> at that meeting we gave senate majority leader mitch mcconnell luiz alvarez's badge. we wanted him and others to
