could keep boeing's 737 max fleet grounded even longer. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, last night the first democratic national debate focused on immigration and health care. tonight we'll hear from the other ten in the second round including joe biden, kamala harris, and pete buttigieg. last night ten candidates tried to stand out in a crowded field of contenders, and laura podesta is in miami. laura, how did they do? >> reporter: hey, good morning, anne-marie. well, this debate covered a lot of ground. former defense secretary julio castro dominated the immigration conversation saying he plans to decriminalize the crossing over the border, and cory booker made

gun control the talking point. so it's hard to say if there's one candidate who came out on top. for two hours -- >> health care is a basic human right, and i will fight for basic human rights. >> reporter: -- ten presidential candidates went toe to toe during nbc's debate like health care. >> i'm concerned about kicking half of america off of their health insurance in four years. >> reporter: afghanistan. >> you have to stay engaged in these situations. >> as a soldier i will tell you that answer is unacceptable. we have to bring our troops home. >> reporter: they also talked about immigration, making their >> i would sign any executive order this would get rid of trump's plan. >> reporter: -- and in spanish regarding executive orders.

the debate took place last night here in florida, a key battle ground state, and where president trump kicked off his re-election campaign a week and a half ago. while the rest of the debase was boring -- >> the biggest threat was donald trump. >> reporter: -- democrats on stage took him to task. >> i'm don't think we should conduct foreign policy in our bathrobe at 5:00 in the morning. >> reporter: some publicly stated whether impeachment proceedings should begin. >> we must begin impeachment now. >> this is not the number one issue american people ask us about. >> reporter: the candidates were largely focused on each other and their party. >> this democratic party has to be strong and bold and progressive. >> reporter: ten more democratic contenders will take the stage in miami tonight. tonight's debate features perennial front-runners joe biden and bernie sanders who have been leading in the early polls. anne-marie. >> laura podesta in miami. thank you, laura.

we saw how the president felt about the debate. he was on a flight, though, while the debate was taking place and he arrived in osaka, japan, this morning for the g20 summit. leaders from the world's largest economies are gathering for the event, and stephen portnoy is there. what's on the agenda the next few days? >> the g20 summit will focus on the global warmer, piling up of trash in the ocean, but as he meets with his counterparts, it's iran, north korea, and trade that are high on his agenda. during the trip he greeted troops at alaska's air base. in osaka he'll greet the leaders of nine countries from australia to japan to modern adversaries, vladimir putin and chinese president xi jinping. before he left washington wednesday, mr. trump was asked about the chances whether he'll strike a deal with china to end the escalating trade war. >> it's a possibility.

i'm meeting with russia, i'm meeting with china, i'm meeting with many countries. >> reporter: as he flew on "air force one," the president tweeted laments about tariffs. this is unacceptable, he wrote, tweeting the tariffs should be withdrawn. he'll discuss it with the crown prince of saudi arabia. he's embraced mohammad bin salman even though he has heard he had a hand in the murder of "washington post" journalist jamal khashoggi. the president was asked if he'll raise the issue of russian election interference as recently detailed in the robert mueller report. >> what i say to him is none of your business. >> after meeting, the president will travel to south korea. in seoul there are widely reported rumors that the president will not only visit the dmz while in south korea, but he'll also have an encounter with kim jong-un.

the white house won't confirm any of that. anne-marie? >> steven portnoy. thank you for that. an american tourist from torrance, california, has been killed by a shark in the bahamas. a girl was killed on rose island. lindsey was visiting the bahamas with her family. she was attacked by three sharks while snorkeling. they bit her arms, legs, buttocks, and severed her right arm. family members tried to warn her when they saw the sharks, but she apparently did not hear them in time. and today house democrats are expected to propose changes to the $4.6 billion border bill. they include adding new requirements for care of migrant families. this follows the release of a heartbreaking photo. we want to warn you, the image is garagic. it shows a father and daughter from el salvador who drowned while trying to cross the rio grande.

there were also reports of filthy conditions. yesterday border patrol officials pushed back against those allegations, though, at a senate hearing. >> we brought in shower facilities. we mentioned the amount of operational funding we're spending on consumables, diapers, food. >> there's a huge disconnect between your testimony and between what we're getting as reports. >> yesterday the senate passed its own border aid bill. it's unclear how or if the house bill and senate bill will reach a compromise. and a new flaw could delay the boeing 737 max air jet from taking to the skies. it march it was grounded worldwide after two deadly classes. kris van cleave reports. >> reporter: during flight tests in a boeing 737 max simulator in seattle, faa pilots discovered a computer issue that could slow down a pilot's ability to deal with a scenario like the ones in the crashes.

the test pilots felt it remained down longer than it should, leaving them concerned it would lead to increased chances of a crash. boeing is working on a software fix to address this issue with the flight computer. if that fails, the component would have to be replaced on all max airplanes, likely extending the grounding. boeing ceo dennis muilenburg. >> we'll spend the time looking at everything. >> they will not lift the ban until the issue is resolved. united airlines joined american and southwest in removing the 737 max from its flight schedule until at least september 3rd. kris van cleave, cbs news, washington. we're learning new two u.s. soldiers who were killed in afghanistan. according to "the new york times," the two servicemembers were killed in an ambush in the eastern wardak province on

wednesday. these latest deaths bring the total number of american fatalities in afghanistan this year to nine. the deaths occurred one day after an unannounced visit by secretary of state mike pompeo to kabul. the u.s. is holding dereket talks with the taliban that are scheduled to resume this weekend in qatar. and police are searching a house in salt lake city as part of an investigation of a missing university stay tunmackenzie lu. police say she met someone at a park and didn't seem to be in distress. they're now searching a home in relation to the case. >> we'll continue to follow the lead until this is resolved. we'll have more information for you as we find what we find inside this house here. >> police say there is no evidence of foul play, but they are worried lueck has

a soccer star sets off against president. the "los angeles times" reports former longtime university and megan rapinoe criticizes president trump and the president fires back. this is the "cbs morning news." a soccer star sets off against president. the "los angeles times" reports former longtime university of southern california gynecologist dr. george tyndall is under arrest. he's been charged with sexually assaulting 16 women at the health center. yesterday he was taken custody outside of his los angeles apartment. police say he was carrying a loaded handgun for which he did not have a permit. he immediately began complaining of chest pains and was taken to the hospital. hundreds of women have accused him of sexual misconduct. he denies any wrongdoing.

"new york times" says president trump criticized u.s. soccer team megan rapinoe whelp she used profanity when asked if she would visit the white house after the world cup. rapinoe's comments to the soccer magazine in january were posted on twitter on tuesday. she was asked whether she was looking forward to going to the white house if the women win. >> i'm not going to the [ bleep ] white house. no, we're not going to the white house. we're not going to be invited. >> you're not going to be invited? >> i doubt it. >> yesterday president trump tweeted rapinoe should never disrespect our country, the white house, or our flag. he also tweeted that he will invite the u.s. team win or lose. rapinoe who is gay has been criticized for not sing and putting her hand over her heart during the "national anthem." team usa plays france tomorrow in the quarte the french prime

deserves the most respect for best quarterback of all time. on the "cbs moneywatch," other retailers are getting in own amazon's primeday, and a chinese tech firm loses a supreme court decision. diane king hall is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, diane. >> good morning, anne-marie. in the early lineup today, nike releases its annual results. here on wall street stocks closed mixed yesterday with gains in tech shares. the dow fell 11 points, the s&p 500 lost 3 points, while the nasdaq added 25 points. a jury has ruled huawei sold trade secrets from a silicon valley startup. jurists declined to levy damages saying the chinese company did not benefit from the theft. they called it a mixed verdict and said it's considering next steps. the company is embroiled in a trade dispute between the u.s. and china. both countries have accused

huawei of illegal transfers and stealing trade. there has been an acceptance. wayfair offered the donation after the protesters refused to sell furniture for use in a detention center for children from texas. yesterday hundreds of wayfair employees walked off the job in protest. and amazon won't be the only destination for online shoppers on primeday next month. target has announced target deal days from july 15 through 16. walmart will offer special buys and rollbacks on walmart.com from july 14th through the 17th, and ebay announced a crash sale on july 15th. that's some ribbing about amazon's servers crashing during last year's event.
