uprising that helped spark the gay rights movement. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, former vice president joe biden came under attack during the second night of the democratic debate. last night biden, the front-runner in the race for the democratic presidential nomination, faced criticism over his record on racial issues, immigration, and abortion rights. laura podesta is in miami. laura, there's one moment in particular that everyone is talking about this morning. what exactly happened between joe biden and kamala harris? >> reporter: well, anne-marie, senator kamala harris challenged former vice president joe biden's record working with segregationists, his history with civil rights. it's one of the most contentious campaigns we've seen so far. >> do you agree today to bussing

in america in. >> no. >> do you agree? >> i did not oppose bussing in america. what i oppose is bussing by the order of the department of education. that's what i oppose. >> reporter: the nbc debate also touched on the wide age gap with the democratic candidates on stage. >> joe biden was right when he decided to pass the torch to new americans. he's still right today. >> i'm still holding onto that torch. >> reporter: either biden or bernie sanders would be the oldest ever elected. when they were not trading barbs against each other, they turned against president trump. >> donald trump has put us in a horrible situation. >> the american people understand that trump is a phoney, that trump is a pathological liar and a racist. >> we have a president who doesn't believe in the rule of e white house, the candidates also vowed to change course on

u.s. foreign policy. pete buttigieg was asked with which foreign power he would wish to change a foreign relationship. >> he got involved with words of his own president trump president trump tweeted all democrats just raised their hands for giving millions of illegal aliens unlimited health care. how about taking care of american citizens first? that's the end of that race. and these last two nights were the first of many debates. the next are in detroit on july 30th and 31st. that, anne-marie, is still over a year from election 2020. >> it's going to be a long haul. laura podesta in miami. thank you, laura. so president trump weighed in on the democratic debate from japan as you heard where he's attending the g20 summit. this morning he met with russian president vladimir putin for the first time in nearly a

year. before the meeting mr. trump and putin appeared to make light of the election meddling scandal. steven portnoy is in osaka. steven, what did the president exactly say to putin? >> as the cameras rolled, anne-marie, he said they should not interfere in politics and then he and putin laughed it off. it's the first time they've met since the last time over the 2016 election. when asked if he would meddle again, he turned to president putin and made a show of it. he was seen shaking hands with and even fist bumping several of his foreign counterparts. >> i just want to thank you. i know we'll have a very successful day. >> the white house says trade and iran were among the key

topics of conversation as mr. trump met with leaders. as he sat alongside the german chancellor, the president made it plain his mind was also on politics at home as the democrats vying to replace him said they would allow illegal immigrants to take part in their health care plans. >> i passed a television set on the way here and i saw that health care and maximum health care was given to 100% of the illegal immigrants coming into our country by the democrats. >> tomorrow before he heads to south korea, the president will meet with chinese president xi jinping. he said the talks would be exciting, at a minimum productive, but he also said he would be fine without a deal ending the escalating trade war. >> thank you, steven. president trump is welcoming a bipartisan border bill that provides more than $4.5 billion to ease the crisis at the border. yesterday the house passed a

senate version of the bill. it would aloe indicate $11 billion to improve the facilities and almost $3 billion to care for migrant children. nancy pelosi said we need to act quickly on the situation. >> the situation is a challenge to the conscience of america. mortar apprehensions hit their high evidence levels in may. and we're learning more about the shark attack that killed a woman in the bahamas. the family of the woman who died is waiting to find out when her body will be returned to the u.s. a biologist says that there was likely a trigger that caused three sharngs tks to attack 21-year-old jordan lindsey on wednesday. the sharks' behavior was apparently not normal. she was snorkeling when she was e io wit >> shark attackss begin th toave

>> last year there were 66 worldwide. only four of them were deadly. investigators are trying to figure out what caused a small plane to skid off a runway in siberia, killing two crew members and injuring many passengers. it experienced engine failure. it overshot the runway, slammed into a building and then caught fire. video from the scene showed the plane on its belly with its nose broken off. 48 people including five crew members were onboard. police in utah have identified a missing person of interest. yesterday salt lake city police spent hours searching a home in connection to the disappearance of 23-year-old mackenzie lueck. the person has not been identified and police identified multiple bags of evidence. >> this is a digital forensic investigation.ring crsteing app

when it arrives at titan eight years later, the drone will use propellers to fly over and land on several spots. it will study whether titan can support primitive life. lebron james may soon be switching numbers, and a new rule for tweets. those are the headlines on the morning newsstand. the "washington post" says twitter will begin putting labels on tweets for those who break its rules. the new policy could potentially have stark implications for president trump's twitter account. users will have to click through the warning to see the tweets, but the tweet itself will not be removed. the "los angeles times" reports grand jury transcripts released yesterday show that rapper nipsey hussle was shot with two guns after he and his accused killer talked about snitching. prosecutors testified before a

grand jury last month that hussle told holder that he was talking about snitching on a gang. holder used at least two guns and shot hussle at least ten times. holder has pleaded not guilty. and cbssports says lebron james will reportedly give away his number 23 jersey to all-star anthony davis. they have agreed to the trade with the new orleans pelicans, but it won't begin until next week. davis has worn number 23 without his seven-year career. james has also worn 23 throughout most of his career but also used number 6. he might be going back to that number with the lakers. e, is w ta dreams come true. taco bell's pop-up hotel is a hit. we'll show you the special amenities offered to guests.

ed sheeran and khalid have teamed up to make some beautiful musical. the perfect singer and the young performer dropped their new song "beautiful people" overnight. it's the third single off ed sheeran's upcoming co-lab perspirati -- collaboration on july 12th. on "cbs moneywatch," taco bell opens up a pop-up hotel and another delay for the return of boeing's max jets. diane king hall is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, diane. >> good morning, anne-marie. on the earnings front beer giant consolation brands were the only ones to report today. here on wall street stocks closed mixed yesterday with banks and health care companies facing the market. the dow fell 10 points, the s&p 500 gained 11 points, and the nasdaq added 57 points. boeing will take until at least september to fix a newly identified problem on its grounded 737 max.

joo 50 years ago today the crowded stonewall inn took a stand. it served as a catalyst in the gay rights movement. tom hanson looks at the inn's place in history. >> reporter: the bar tender remembers the night the police raided the stonewall inn 50 years ago. >> we heard the screaming on the other side. we knew it was a raid, but we didn't know it was a raid of all raids because we were so used to raids. >> reporter: on june 28th, 1969, the lgbtq community took a stand on the police who raided the greenwich bar, throwing stones and bottles. before gay rights they were forced mostly underground. >> two out of three americans look upon homosexuals with

disgust or fear. >> reporter: they look at the latest exhibition before and after stonewall. >> the exhibition covers the '50s through the '90s. >> reporter: the museum's director describes how the stonewall became a movement. >> it provided a safe haven in an arena for letting loose. that was really critical for this community. >> reporter: the stonewall's owners say it still provides a forum for activism. >> what can the average person do to support the cause? >> to realize where they came from, to realize that the right they have now wasn't always there and if they don't fight for it, they could lose it again. >> it's critical that stonewall continues to be that globalized symbol and continues to lead the fight and stay at the forefront of the gay rights movement. >> reporter: and to remember

it's the place where p.r.i.d.e. began. tom hanson, cbs news, new york. and the u.s. women's soccer team is getting ready to take on france today in the final semiquarterfinals. the defending champion americans will meet the number four ranked french team in paris in what's expected to be a tough match. the americans have played france 23 times in their history with france winning just three times, but in the last three matches france has won twice and there was one draw. the temperatures in paris is expected to be in the 90s at kickoff. so coming up on "cbs this morning" in our series "a more perfect union," jan crawford shows us a program that helps struggling students explore their personal stories through art. i'm anne-marie green. this is the "cbs morning news." our top story this morning, democratic presidential candidates called for a new generation of leadership during the second night of the democratic debate. kamala harris had a heated exchange with former vice president joe biden over the issue of race. biden called the attacks a mischaracterization of his position. and south bend, indiana, mayor pete buttigieg was asked questions about shootings in his hometown of a white officer shooting a black man. in a 5-4 decision, the supreme court blocked president trump's question on the 2020 census.

jan crawford has more. >> reporter: the justices said they would have to be naive for the rationale adding a question to the 2020 census. wilbur ross said it was to improve voting rights. but john roberts called that explanation contrived. >> every single person in this country deserves to be counted, plain and simple. >> reporter: it was a victory for immigrant rights groups who accused the administration to adding the question to deter noncitizens from responding to the census. blocking the question for now, the justices sent the case back to the lower court for more evidence, which likely will include documents from a deceased republican operative outlining a strategy to undercount minorities by adding the citizenship question. on twitter the president said the question was totally ridiculous and the fight wasn't over. he said he was asking lawyers about a delay in the census while the administration gave the court additional information.

>> i think it's a very fair question like how old are you, you know, what's your race, what's your gender. i never thought it was inappropriate. >> reporter: it wasn't the only politically loaded case on the court's last day. in another 5-4 decision, this time with the conservatives joining roberts, the court looked at partisan gerrymandering and said federal courts should stay out of it. the justices refused to strike down electoral maps in north carolina drawn to favor republicans and in maryland drawn to help democrats as too extreme, saying that political question was better for state courts and legislatures. now, as for that census battle, the constitution requires a census every ten years, which means it has to be done in 2020. so it's entirely unclear whether this issue could each be resolved in time for that. jan crawford, cbs news, the supreme court. coming up on "cbs this morning," a preview of the
