>> begnaud: and youth is served at wimbledon. a 15-year-old from florida beats a five-time champion, venus williams. >> i never thought this would happen. i'm literally living my dream right now. >> begnaud: good evening from new york. i'm david begnaud. this is our western edition. there is a secret facebook group involving border patrol agents that has been exposed. investigative journalists at propublica discovered thousands of members posted jokes about migrant deaths as well as sexist memes. this came to light as president trump was signing a package of humanitarian aid for the border. and new questions are being raised tonight about those migrant care. more now from jeff pegues. >> reporter: the facebook group was dubbed "i'm 10-15," which is border patrol code for aliens in custody. recently, one of the group's 9,500 members posted this photo of a dead migrant and his 23- month-old daughter and asked if it was fake because the bodies were so clean.

in another post, group members responded with indifference to the death in border patrol custody of a 16-year-old guatemalan migrant, "if he dies, he dies." according to the media organization propublica, there were lewd memes and sexist posts, some of which were aimed at members of congress, including new york democrat alexandria ocasio-cortez. today she tweeted, "they're threatening violence on members of congress. how do you think they're treating caged children and families?" she was part of a congressional delegation that toured the detention facility in clint, texas, today. hispanic caucus chairman joaquin castro called for an investigation into the facebook posts. >> that shows, unfortunately, that there are many within c.b.p. who have become desensitized to the point of being dangerous to the migrants in their care and to their coworkers. >> reporter: today president trump defended the border patrol. >> the border patrol, they're

patriots. they're great people. they love our country. they know what's coming in. >> reporter: c.b.p. officials called the facebook posts "completely inappropriate." chief of operations brian hastings says an investigation is under way. >> each one of those individuals, if they are found to have done these, the appropriate disciplinary actions will be taken. >> reporter: just like police departments across the country, the union that represents c.b.p. agents says that it has cautioned its members about how they use social media. the union also says that that facebook group does a disservice to all c.b.p. agents. david? >> begnaud: jeff pegues leading us off from washington tonight. thank you, jeff. just a short time ago we got word that a pitcher for the los angeles angels died suddenly. his name is tyler skaggs. breaking details. >> reporter: 27-year-old los angeles angels' pitcher tyler skaggs was found dead in a texas hotel room this afternoon in a suburb of dallas.

the angels were in texas to play the rangers and had a game scheduled tonight. in a statement, the south lake texas police department said they responded to a call of an unconscious male in a room at a hilton hotel. officers arrived and found the male unresponsive. he was pronounced dead at the scene. >> tyler skaggs taking the mound for the angels. >> reporter: skaggs had pitched the first inning during a game saturday night between the angels and the oakland athletics. in a statement, the angels said, "tyler has and always will be an important part of the angels family." >> it's a really sad situation obviously. it's important that we all obviously keep him in our thoughts and prayers but also just have the perspective of, you know, how fragile life is. it's just really sad. >> the secret to all your success? >> like i said last time, i think it's confidence. >> reporter: skaggs was a first- round draft pick by the angels in 2009 and a regular starter since 2016. he had struggled with injuries

for the past three seasons, but he was the team's most reliable pitcher this season. skaggs had just married his wife carli last year. >> everybody talked about him. just saddened by the news today. >> reporter: the south lake, texas, police department says no foul play is suspected and the investigation is ongoing. fans have been posting their condolences on skaggs' twitter page, and the angels' game tonight has been postponed. >> begnaud: 27 years old. so tragic. nikki, thank you very much. facebook evacuated employees from four buildings today after the mailroom flagged a package that tested positive for a possible hazardous substance. the f.b.i. is investigating. the substance has not been identified. and no one was injured. to hong kong now. protests erupted today on the anniversary of its handover from british to chinese control. some protesters bashed their way into the legislative building and vandalized it. they are angry over an attempt to change the law to allow

suspects to be sent to china's mainland for prosecutions. ramy inocencio is in the middle of it all. >> reporter: hong kong has never seen this happen before, hundreds of young protesters, furious at their beijing-backed government, stormed the city's legislature. they broke through its doors, vandalized the walls, and called on the city's leader, carrie lam, to step down. they demanded she revoke a controversial bill that would allow extraditions to china. we are now inside hong kong's legislative chamber with the people who stormed this place. this really is unprecedented. looking at the signs here, the vandalization really, this sign here says, "no rioters. only tyranny." another sign says, "carrie lam, resign." the people here say they will not leave until they're forced out or until their demands have been met. the protesters spent three hours occupying the government

building. after clear restraint all day, hong kong's police force warned they would clear the area. we just got the signal from someone down the street that the police are on their way. people here are all getting ready with umbrellas to protect themselves from the tear gas that they are expecting. just after midnight, the police made their advance. after 30 minutes and several rounds of tear gas, all protesters have fled, but over 50 were injured, some seriously. monday's violence stood in clear contrast to the larger peaceful democracy rally happening nearby with hundreds of thousands in attendance. this is the third mass protest in just the past four weeks, and, david, just a few hours ago, hong kong's chief executive, carrie lam, condemned the storming that happened right here as extremely violent. >> begnaud: ramy inocencio in hong kong tonight, thank you. to dallas now, the national

transportation safety board just wrapped up a news conference answering questions about a plane that crashed outside dallas that killed ten people yesterday. the plane crashed right into a hangar just shortly after take- off. mireya villarreal now with the latest. >> everybody just stand by. we had an accident on the field. >> reporter: the private plane crashed at 9:11 a.m., killing all ten people on board. among the passengers who died was alice maritato, a sophomore in high school, and her brother dylan maritato. they were traveling with their mother and stepfather, headed to st. petersburg, florida. steven and gina phelan were also on board. investigators with the national transportation safety board found the cockpit voice recorder late last night. >> our team recovered the cockpit voice recorder, and it is being downloaded now in the washington, d.c., laboratory of the n.t.s.b. >> reporter: pilot david snell witnessed the crash from a nearby hangar. >> myself and my other pilot

friend, we knew that that airplane was not producing the type of take-off power that it typically would by the sound, plus it wasn't climbing the way that it typically would, and it appeared a little tail low. we knew that that airplane was in trouble. >> reporter: the twin engine beechcraft super king was taking off at the north end of the airport. witnesses say it lifted off the runway, reaching about 500 feet when it began losing power and altitude. the plane then veered left and dropped its left wing before slamming into the hangar. when you're watching this all happen, as a pilot, what is going through your mind? >> sickness. all my years of flying, i have never seen anything like, that but my thoughts are for the families, the people, the lives changed, and there's nothing you can do about it. >> reporter: you know, this plane rolled into the building you see behind me, and then it came out the front end. and investigators know this because there is security video of this accident. right now we're told that video will not be released until the full report comes out.

that could take well over a year, however, david, there is a preliminary report that could be released as early as two weeks. >> begnaud: okay. good. incredible hearing from that witness, mireya. thank you. as you probably noticed, president trump made history sunday. he became the first sitting u.s. president to set foot in north korea. he's now back at the white house in washington amid questions about what exactly was accomplished at the d.m.z. here's paula reid. >> reporter: the day after he became first sitting u.s. president to step on north korean soil, president trump tweeted, "it was great to call on chairman kim of north korea to have our very well-covered meeting." the president now must show the meeting was not just about media coverage but progress toward dismantling the north's nuclear program. >> it's just an honor to be with you and an honor that you asked me to step over that line. i was proud to step over the line. >> reporter: after a nearly one- hour meeting, the president told reporters he and kim agreed to restart nuclear negotiations after failed talks in hanoi

earlier this year. the meeting was a propaganda victory for kim as photos of the two leaders splashed across three full pages of the official government newspaper. mike morrell is a former acting director of the c.i.a. and a cbs news consultant. >> we have provided additional legitimacy to kim jong-un, which is gold for him, political gold for him at home. >> reporter: while kim has suspended nuclear and long-range missile tests, he continues to add to his nuclear stockpile. >> reporter: it comes at a price, but i actually think that price is worth getting back to the negotiating table and seeing if we can get somewhere with talking to these guys. >> reporter: national security adviser john bolton denied a "new york times" report suggesting the trump administration would settle for a nuclear freeze by north korea where they would end new production of nuclear material but maintain its current nuclear arsenal. he tweeted, "neither the n.s.c. staff nor i have discussed or heard of any desire to settle for a nuclear freeze by north

korea." president trump says u.s. sanctions will remain on north korea, but he's open to easing them if negotiations are successful. david? >> begnaud: paula reid from the white house tonight. thank you, paula. european nations are scrambling to save the 2015 iran nuclear deal. this after iran announced it has breached the limit of how much nuclear fuel it can hold under the agreement. president trump, who pulled the u.s. out of the deal last year, said today, "iran is playing with fire." to the presidential campaign now. senator kamala harris appears to have gotten a bit of a bump from last week's debate. a cnn poll out today puts her just five points behind joe biden. elizabeth warren and bernie sanders are third and fourth. ed o'keefe reports that harris has received some unwanted attention from the trump family. >> reporter: senator kamala harris was off the campaign trail today, a day after participating in a gay pride

parade in her hometown of san francisco. over the weekend, in a notable sign of unity, fellow opponents came to her defense. >> we have a president who is a racist and apparently based on a statement yesterday his son is following in his footsteps. >> reporter: he's referring to a retweet by the president's son, donald trump, jr. during last week's debate, he drew attention to a conservative commentator who claimed harris was "not an american black because her black father was from jamaica and her mother from india." a spokesman said he didn't know the senator's background and deleted the post once he saw that folks were misconstruing the intent of his tweet. on twitter, senator elizabeth warren called the attacks racist and ugly, and former vice president joe biden called the attacks disgusting and said the same forces of hatred that questioned former president barack obama's citizenship. he faced years of questions about his own background, spearheaded by then businessman donald trump. >> all i want to do is see this

a rare infection with so-called "flesh-eating bacteria." she was infected while walking on the beach near her home in st. petersburg, florida. here's dr. jon lapook >> reporter: for 77-year-old lynn fleming, a small cut suffered two weeks ago from a fall on the beach turned quickly into a fatal illness. fleming's son wade says she liked to walk on this gulf of mexico beach near her florida home. >> she didn't know there was a small ditch there, and she stumbled and fell and hit the embankment on the other side. she had a small little three- quarter-inch long cut on her shin bone. >> reporter: three days later fleming was found semiconscious in her home. she was rushed to the emergency room and was diagnosed with necrotizing fasciitis, a rare but potentially deadly infection from so-called flesh-eating bacteria. she died two weeks after her fall. this comes on the heels of another case in florida, a 12- year-old girl contracted the illness from a scrape on her toe and is now recovering at home. according to the c.d.c., approximately 700 to 1,200 cases

occur each year in the united states. even with treatment, up to one in three people with necrotizing fasciitis die from the infection. >> maybe if she was diagnosed a little earlier, maybe we would be sitting here talking to my mom without a leg. but with a life. >> reporter: types of bacteria that can cause this include strep, which may be living on skin, or rarely bacteria that can survive in salt water. once there is a wound, they can slip below the skin and cause severe infection. >> begnaud: jon, is antibiotics used to treat this? >> reporter: yes, if you get it sooner. but if you have a wound, wash it out with soap and water and look for signs of infection, redness, pain out of proportion, swelling, oozing at the area, or if you're just plain feeling rotten, check in with a physician. >> begnaud: how quickly should you go to a doctor? >> reporter: as quickly as possible. and once it's in the bloodstream, david, even with antibiotics it may be too late.
