feinstein. i'll let you take a look at some of their signs. we have people of all different ages and ethnicities here with the common cause that we're seeing across the country right now, a message to close the camps. these people are incensed by the conditions of some of the detention centers at the mexican border and the stires coming out of there about child abuse and neglect. here is one called stopplestead in florida. the protestors want this facility to close. they want all of them to close. they want the politicians to stop signing off on payments for detention, and they want all members of congress to go and visit these centers to see them for themselves. and they're heartened by all of the support gathered here today. >> i feel like we're offering people something to do with their shattered hearts when they hear the news every day,

particularly i think the children. it is dire. >> it is horrific. >> reporter: there are also a couple of people gathered now in palo alto, and there are more demonstrations scheduled for tonight. one in oakland, one at walnut creek. both at 5:30. you can find out more about them at moveon. org. the protests are happening all across the country. demonstrators were out earlier today at the offices of the republican senators marco rubio in miami, florida and lindsey graham in mount pleasant, south carolina. the protests come as president trump threatens to deport more illegal migrants. just as the lawmakers got an up close look at the detention facilities. they are calling them deplorable and unacceptable. >> reporter: congressman castro shot cell phone video of women in border patrol custody. he says some detained migrants have been denied medication and showers. >> we saw that the system is

still broken, that people's human rights are still being abused. >> reporter: castro was one of caucus who toured detention nic facilities in texas. >> these women were being told by the officers to drink out of the toilet. >> reporter: an official pushed back saying they're drinking poetable water from the sink attached to the toilet. cbs news has confirmed a new department of homeland security inspector general report is expected this week that will describe conditions at some facilities as cramped and dangerous. texas senator ted cruz was also on the southern border monday. >> the responsibility for this crises lies directly on the united states congress. on loopholes that congress has put in the laws that are encouraging far too many people to make this arduous journey. >> reporter: frump has signed the $4.

their buildings are clear for re-entry after reports of potentially hazardous mail yey morning the equipment facebook uses to screen its mail sounded an alarm on a mailbag testing positive for sarin. sarin is described as a nerve agent that forces the body's muscles into overdrive and often kills people who come in contact with it. several agencies, including the fbi, were called in to test the mail. in the meantime in san francisco we are expecting an update from police today on a horrific car crash at sfo that left one person dead and two others hospitalized. it happened yesterday afternoon in the arrival section of the international termal. a witness tells us two men and a woman were loading their suitcases into a car when it was hit by another vehicle. the police say there is nothing to suggest the crash was intentional. and new at noon, vaping advocates submitted a petition to roll back san francisco's new ban on the sale of e- cigarettes. the group collected more than 20,000 signatures in their

for measures of youth vaping while still allowing adults to buy e- cigarettes. it has tech necks and pre-set purchasing limits could reduce the use of vaping products by people under the age of 21. >> this ban doesn't make sense. you're taking a product that has helped thousands of people stop smoking cigarettes off the shelves, which is going to drive them back to smoking cigarettes, and how is that good for public health? roar the department of elections now has 30 days to verify signatures. if passed, the initiative would also enact new regulations for online retailers that sell the products. governor gavin newsom is highlighting affordable housing. what is once a vacant lot will soon be # 7 brand-new affordable housing units. thanks to state funding and a $4.5 million bond from the city of emeryville, this will be home to dos of people this

monday, kpix 5. president trump just commented on the homelessness crises in san francisco and los angeles. in an interview with fox news yesterday, he said, quote, we may do something to get that whole thing cleaned up. it is inappropriate. the sounds of glass shattering and the alarm going off caught the attention of a person who alerted police of a jewelry store burglary in san raphael. it happened on fourth street. the men wearing ski masks took several items from the store and took off in a gold mercedes. the investigators say the suspects could be linked to other bay area jewelry store ar ngfremont will face a judge today. the police say the 43-year-old christina haller and a man were seen arguing last month. haller allegedly firing a flare at him.

the taste of the day, hot house tomatoes, beefsteak. they're grown in hot houses year round, so because mother nature really doesn't have a big, you know, say in how they're groin because they're grown in hot houses, there is no reason why you can't buy them perfectly year round. because if the hot house release as tomato that is not ripe, let's talk about selection and storage. when you buy a beautiful beefsteak hot house tomato, make sure it is nice and red all around and heavy for its size. very important no greening, and when you bring them home, store them object the counter, never, ever in the refrigerator. i hate tomatoes in the refrigerator and they're too cold and they lose that wonderful juice. so store them in the refrigerator and there you go.
