from colin kaepernick. >> when you see it, it's like you see slavery. >> begnaud: and how a family tragedy led two sisters to share the gift of life. >> i couldn't save my dad, but i was able to save somebody else. >> begnaud: good evening from new york, i'm david begnaud. this is the western edition of we'll start with news breaking tonight in southern california. a decorated navy seal has been found not guilty of killing a war prisoner in iraq. special operations chief edward gallagher was acquitted today by a jury of combat veterans. they did convict him of one minor charge, posing for photographs with a dead war casualty. jonathan vigliotti leads us off tonight from san diego. >> he is going home. >> reporter: the 19-year military veteran, medic, and navy seal learned his fate after more than six hours of deliberation by a seven-person military jury. >> we are finally vindicated after being terrorized by the government that my husband fought for two decades of the war on terror. >> reporter: the trial revealed

a seal team divided with a dozen witnesses testifying. seven seals, including two who said they saw the act, accused gallagher of repeatedly stabbing an injured teenage isis fighter in the neck and body while other members of the team were treating his wounds in may 2017. he then allegedly posed in front of the corpse as part of a reenlistment ceremony. gallagher's attorney described the trial as a mutiny led by junior seals that didn't like his client's demanding leadership style. the two-week trial was rocked by shocking moments including a stunning admission from a prosecution witness. navy seal kori scott, who said he, and not gallagher, killed the injured isis fighter. "i held my thumb over his tracheal tube until he quit breathing." the defense attorney then asked, "why did you kill him?" scott replied, "because i knew he would die anyway." the navy prosecutor said gallagher's own words and photos proved his guilt in a social media post, the seal is seen

posing in front of the corpse with a message sent to his friends, "good story behind this. got him with my hunting knife." but gallagher and his wife have steadfastly maintained his innocence. >> we want to celebrate today in the victory that we have and my husband being a free man. >> reporter: again, gallagher was only found guilty of posing with that body, which is a violation of the military's code of conduct. it does carry a maximum sentence of four months, but david, he's walking away a free man tonight having served more than six months. >> begnaud: jonathan vigliotti with the verdict from san diego. thank you, jonathan. we have gotten our clearest picture yet of the growing crisis at the southern border. just today government inspectors told us about deplorable conditions for migrants in detention facilities. some were held in standing-room only cells for a week. today there were protests and it happened nationwide. mireya villarreal has more. >> reporter: these are pictures

from surprise visits inside border patrol detention facilities in south texas. federal inspectors observed serious overcrowding and prolonged detention at five locations just three weeks ago. one senior manager at the facility calls the situation "a ticking time bomb." a report from the office of inspector general says in june rio grande valley facilities were holding nearly 2,700 children. more than 50 of them were unaccompanied minors under the age of seven. at three locations, children had no access to showers and many had limited access to a change of clothes or laundry facilities. the report shows migrants held in standing-room only cells for a week at a time, while others confined for more than a month in overcrowded rooms. there were several protests where adult male detainees clogged toilets with blankets and socks so they could be released from their cells during maintenance. the department of homeland

security acknowledged the report's findings and describes the situation at our southern border as an acute and worsening crisis. this 12-year-old girl was recently released from another detention facility in clint, texas, near el paso, where it received national attention for conditions described as being unsanitary. she says, "some children didn't bathe and were given little food." >> never again! >> reporter: today across the country protests were staged outside congressional offices pushing politicians to close down these facilities. >> this is part of a national effort to make sure that all the congress people during their break are visiting the camps if possible. >> reporter: the building you see behind me is one of the busiest facilities for border patrol in the country, and what we know is that it's one of the five that was on that report and inspected last month. david, congress has called an emergency hearing to address the findings in that o.i.g. report, and that will happen next week.

>> begnaud: mireya villarreal in texas tonight. thank you, mireya. i have to tell you, just about everyone in our newsroom watched team u.s.a. beat england today 2-1 in the women's world cup for soccer. this was the semifinals. it was a hard-fought match between two very proud teams, and everything was on the line. our roxana saberi was there in lyon, france. >> reporter: for a sixth game in a row, team u.s.a. scored first and fast. >> goal! >> reporter: but just like that, england got even. the u.s. pulled ahead again, but the game was filled with tension and tough plays until the end. >> saved! >> reporter: when team u.s.a. handed their fans at the stadium and back home another victory. >> team u.s.a. all the way, baby. >> reporter: what did you guys think of the game? >> epic game, epic game. worthy opponent. very physical match. proud to bring home the "w" for

sure. >> reporter: the u.s. beat england, ranked third in the world, without star player megan rapinoe, who watched from the sidelines. i's not clear if she sat out because of an injury. with this mix of talent and experience, the u.s. is used to winning. >> this was such a great game for us to build on. we made it to the finals. that's what we've been waiting on. >> that was it. the u.s. wins. >> reporter: the stars and stripes are now aiming for a record fourth world cup trophy, a goal many of their fans say is well within reach. how far do you think the u.s. will go? >> oh, we're going to take it. we're defending champs. we're going to take it. >> reporter: the u.s. will now go on to the final here in lyon on sunday. they will play either sweden or the netherlands. david. >> begnaud: so there could be a celebration on sunday. thank you, roxana. there will be a celebration thursday in the nation's capital, and the tanks have already arrived. major garrett now on how this independence day will be different. ♪ ♪

>> reporter: in recent years fourth of july on the national mall has been a tribute to universal american themes-- the declaration of independence, the constitution, a star-spangled civic hymn. this year by design it will be much more about him. >> and i'm going to be here. and i'm going to say a few words. and we're going to have planes going overhead, the best fighter jets in the world and other planes, too. and we're going to have some tanks stationed outside. >> reporter: two tanks and two infantry fighting vehicles arrived by train today, power washed before being trucked to the mall, where they will stay put to prevent their treads from tearing up city streets. air force one and marine one will fly over, as will a b-2 bomber, f-22 fighter jet, osprey helicopters and the blue angels. the largest concentration of military might in washington since the end of the first gulf war. president trump will speak from the steps of the lincoln memorial before white house

david. advocates for undocumented immigrants had sued the administration, taken the case all the way to the supreme court. the supreme court handed them a victory, saying it needed more information. the president threatened to delay the census, but the constitutional requirement to count every person in the united states every ten years forced the census bureau to get the questionnaire printed so it could get it out. >> begnaud: major garrett at the white house, thanks, major. there was a moment of silence tonight before the los angeles angels game in order to honor tyler skaggs. the pitcher died yesterday. he was 27. today the team spoke for the first time since he died. carter evans is at the game in arlington, texas. >> it's difficult. >> reporter: the shock is still fresh and emotions raw as those in the angels organization speak out for the first time since the death of pitcher tyler skaggs.>e heart.usou ry do.. you're so in shock. >> reporter: skaggs died suddenly in his hotel room just hours before the team's

scheduled away game against the texas rangers. he was only 27, and in the prime of his career. >> a good fastball early on from skaggs. >> reporter: he had pitched just two nights earlier at the team's home field in anaheim. as the news quickly spread, fans flocked to angels stadium to pay respects, including some who were at that game. >> it's just shocking to me because we were here saturday night when he pitched. now he's gone. just... >> devastating. >> yeah, devastating. >> you have to feel sorry for the family right now. just... my heart goes out the them. >> reporter: skaggs is survived by carli, his wife of just seven months, and his parents. the cause of death may not be known for several weeks. and even though last night's game was postponed, tonight's will go on. >> these guys will be there fighting for each other with tyler weighing heavy on their hearts tonight. >> reporter: right now police do not suspect foul play. they also don't think suicide is a factor at this point. it will likely be a very

emotional game here tonight. david, we've seen angels fans in the stands here in texas tonight clutching photos of tyler ngaggs. >> begnaud: glad you're there. thanks, carter. nike was set to sell a new sneaker that featured a 13-star american flag in time for the fourth of july, but the company suddenly pulled them out of stores. if nike was trying to avoid a controversy though, it did not work. here's meg oliver. >> reporter: nike set off a firestorm after pulling their shoes emblazoned with the betsy ross flag-- an early version of the american flag with 13 stars and stripes used in the 1700s, before slavery was abolished. when you look at that early version of the american flag, what does it symbolize? >> well, it symbolizes-- actually, i see the colonies, and that leads directly to slavery. >> reporter: in some cases the betsy ross flag has been co- opted by white supremacist groups like the k.k.k. conservatives lashed out against nike, republican senator ted

cruz of texas wrote, "it's a tod thing nike only wants to sell sneakers to people who hate the american flag." arizona's republican governor, doug ducey, withdrew all financial incentives the state promised nike to invest in a $185 million factory in arizona, and former republican presidential candidate herman cain tweeted, "nothing can happen in america anymore if colin kaepernick doesn't like it." >> believe in something, even if it means sacrificing everything. >> reporter: former n.f.l. star colin kaepernick is the face of nike's "just do it" campaign. he reportedly complained to nike the flag is an offensive symbol of slavery. >> this is a great teaching moment, and it brings us in contact with the history that most of us and most americans do not want to deal with. >> reporter: in a statement, nike doesn't mention kaepernick, but says they made the decision to halt distribution based on

boat. he was coming for you. >> mouth wide open. and i felt like a seal at that moment. >> reporter: social media recently featured pictures of sharks terrifyingly close to swimmers in florida. marine biologists think the main reason they're seeing more sharks off the east coast is because the seal population, which is protected by law, has exploded. >> we think it really is as simple as larger number of seals, more sharks coming close to shore to feed on the seals. >> reporter: the orleans, massachusetts fire chief anthony pike has added land line phones because of bad cell reception. f people can pick this phone up and get to the emergency communication center. >> reporter: and on the beach there are first aid boxes for dealing with severe injuries. >> tourniquets, eye protection, gloves, trauma dressing. if you have access to this box, you have a pretty good cache of what you may need in a major emergency. >> i ask people, if you're going ou're in an area where these sharks are hunting, this is a natural hunting ground for this species. take into consideration the fact that you are a land animal going
