lee iacocca. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, a new report from homeland security offers an inside look at the growing crisis at the southern border. the report details overcrowding, prolonged detention, and security risks at migrant facilities in south texas. lawmakers are now calling on top immigration officials to testify on capitol hill. katherine johnson is in washington. katherine, what else does the new report say about these facilities? well, anne-marie, investigators visited phi ports of entry and to areas in the rio grande valley. they say they're concerned over the overcrowding and the detention is creating, quote, an immediate risk to the health and demonstrators around the nation

protested yesterday, demanding facilities holding migrant families be closed. this as there's growing outrage over the living conditions at the facilities. homeland security inspectors observed serious overcrowding at five detention centers last month. one man called the situation a ticking time bomb. a report from the inspector general's fa sill said rio grande valley facility were holding nearly 2,700 children. more than 50 were unaccompanied minors under 7 years old. they're looking for ways to get out of their cells. some would block toilets with mylar blankets and socks in order to be released from their cells during maintenance. they describe the situation at our southern border as an acute and worsening crisis. this week several lawmakers visited detention centers along the border.

>> i've been deeply moved by what i have seen, what i have observed. when you see something that is not right, not fair, not just, you have to say something. >> the house oversight and reform committee responded to the report by scheduling a hearing for next week. among those invited to testify are dhs secretary kevin mcaleenan and the acting head of customs and border patrol mike morgan. lawmakers have long called for better oversight on these facilities, and that will be the specific target at these hearings to learn more about that oversight. those hearings are scheduled to start a week from july 12th. anne-marie? >> thank you, katherine. a navy s.e.a.l. found not guilty is expected to be sentenced today on a separate charge. yesterday the jury did not convicted special operations chief edward gallagher guilty

but did find him guilty for posing with photographs of a dead war casualty. nichelle medina has more on that. >> reporter: the jury found navy chief ed gallagher not guilty of murder. and his wife spoke from san diego. >> we're finally vindicated after being terrorized by the government that my husband fought for two decades on the war on terror. >> reporter: at gallagher's murder trial he was accused of murder by members of his own team. >> huge weight off the gallaghers, huge victory for justice. >> the 19-year veteran was accused of stabbing to death a captured teenaged isis fighter in 2017. though he was acquitted of that count, he was found guilty of posing with the corpse. this video shows the isis

teen after he was injured by an air strike in iraq, struggling to breathe. a government witness dropped a bombshell testifying he was the one who killed the war prisoner by pressing on his tracheal tube. gallagher was also found not guilty of shooting at civilians in separate incidents. >> this vindication i hope will be a lesson learned to everybody that we need to uphold innocent until proven guilty. >> reporter: gallagher has already served more time than the maximum sentence on wednesday. he left court at the wheel of a white convertible beginning a new chapter of his life. nichelle medina, cbs news, los angeles. the u.s. census bureau has started printing the 2020 census without the question president trump asked for. they blocked the question from being added to the census. yesterday president trump tweeted he's not giving up. he asked the justice and commerce departments to do whatever is necessary. meanwhile they're trying to

obtain mr. trump's tax l ghthe latest in court and this comes amid the new criticism over his planned fourth of july celebration in d.c. yesterday, military tanks arrived in the nation's capitol. mr. trump said they'll be stationed at the national mall on the fourth of july. mr. trump will deliver remarks from the lincoln memorial. the event will also include flyovers by military aircraft. some democrats criticize the president of it. they fear it could damage infrastructure. there's no word on how much the event will cause. >> auto industry icon lee iacocca has died. he died yesterday at his home in bel air, california. iacocca helped create the ford mustangs and chrysler minivan. he's also credited with rescuing chrysler from bankruptcy in the 1980s.

in 1984 his biography became an international bestseller. he's survived by two daughters and eight grandchildren. iacocca was 94 years old. a moment of silence was held before the angels and rangers took to the field in memory of tyler scaggs. >> please join the texas rangers, the los angeles angels as we honor tyler skaggs. >> yesterday his image was displayed on an electronic billboard before the game outside dallas. angels players wore scaggs' number 45 on their uniform. it was the angels' first game since his death and they won, 9-4. the 27-year-old was found unresponsive in a hotel room in a dallas suburb. it's unclear how he died. police say suicide and foul play are not suspected. team usa will advance to the women's world cup final. yesterday the u.s. team beat

england 2-1 in the semifinals in france. it was a hard-fought match between two strong teams with everything on the line. roxana saberi reports. >> reporter: for its sixth game in a row, team usa scored first and fast. but just like that, england got even. the u.s. pulled ahead again, but the game was filled with tension and tough plays until the end when team usa handed their fans at the stadium and back home another victory. >> team usa all the way, baby. >> what did you guys think of the game. >> oh, it was an epic game, epic game. we're the opponent. so intense. proud to bring home the "w" for sure. >> reporter: u.s. beat england, ranked third in the world, without star megan rapinoe who

an arctic fox made a long journey, and dangerous mold at a seattle hospital. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. "the seattle times" reports seattle children's hospital revealed that one patient died and five others were infected by mold. the hospital was forced to indefinitely close all of its main operating rooms. yesterday the hospital disclosed the death and infections to the "times" in response to follow-up questions about the closing of 14 operating rooms since may 18th. the medical center said operating rooms were infested by mold off and on for about a year. they say it's likely due to deficiencies in air handling and purification systems. about 1,000 surgeries have been pose posted and others have been moved to alter gnat locations. nike is pulling a shoe from its store shelves. nike endorser colin kaepernick

urging the supreme court to recognize that federal civil rights law makes it illegal to discriminate against gay and transgender employees in the workplace. those companies include amazon, google, and bank of america. they argue that bias against lgbtq is a form of unlawful sex discrimination and say a ruling otherwise would harm businesses and workers. the justices will hold arguments in october on three cases. a recent series of facebook video ads for president trump's re-election campaign is using models to portray trump supporters. the ads include a young woman on a beach in florida, a bearded man in texas. turns out they're models in stock video for purchase available online. the ads do contain a disclaimer. the president's ad campaign committee declined to comment. according to the american ilead-up to theociation the

like cape cod in massachusetts, and that's also where 11 great white sharks have been spotted close to the shore in recent days. don dahler is on the cape. >> reporter: massachusetts marine biologist greg skomal tagged three of the 12 great whites spotted off cape cod in the past two days. >> wow! holy [ bleep ]. it jumped right out of the water. >> reporter: this wasn't skomal's first encounter with jaws. >> he was coming after you. >> i felt like a seal at that moment. >> reporter: social media recently pictured sharks swimming close to the border. marine biologists believe the reason they're seeing more sharks off the east coast is because of the seal population protected by law has exploded.
