headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, the weather system in the gulf of mexico this morning could strengthen into the first hurricane of the storm season as early as tomorrow. flash flood warnings are in effect from texas to florida as residents prepare for high winds and dangerous flooding. marc liverman is here in new york. marc, how much of a threat is this going to be? >> good morning, anne-marie. still too early to say how and where things will be impacted. one thing is for sure. the storm soon to be named barry is going to take a big toll. storm watches and warnings are now in place in states along the gulf of mexico. >> the entire coastal area of louisiana is at play. >> a large storm system is brewing over the gulf of mexico. this weekend it's expected to develop into hurricane barry, the first of the 2019 season. on wednesday new orleans got a

possible preview of what's to come, an extensive downpour that caused flooding in just three hours. >> pretty crazy. i'm going to book the next flight back to australia. >> the storm is coming at a time when the mississippi is flowing at twice its level. the army corps of engineers says it will overtop the levee in some overlying areas. >> mandatory evacuation orders are being posted in louisiana's coastal areas. >> every time it rains hard or we get a south wind, you're going to get a flood. >> new orleans officials say they're as prepared as much as they can be. 128 drainage pumps are currently operational and ready to be put to work if needed. and new orleans officials have asked residents to keep at least three days of supplies on hand

and keep the neighborhood storm drains clear so water can be moved quickly. the last time they had a hurricane hit like this was hurricane al ma in 1963. anne-marie? >> marc liverman in new york. thank you, mark. this morning a hurricane watch is posted for much of the louisiana coast. chief meteorologist scott padgett of our station shows us where the storm is expected to hit. >> good morning. when you look at possible storms, you look at the area of least resistant. there's a big area of high pressure in the southwest in the u.s. and this system is right in between it feeding off sea temperatures of 84 to 86 degrees. latetoday tropicalstorm bay wild about 45 miles per hour and be on a due west track. but going through thursday night into the day on friday will turn more westward as high pressure starts to build back. then going through friday night into saturday, possibly moving

onshore in south central louisiana and continuing as a tropical storm saturday into sunday before downgrading. the other big story, rain. a lot of rain expected with barry. you can see we can have anywhere from 5 to 10 to even 20 inches of rain in louisiana, mississippi, and even parts of ark as the storm makes its way to the north. scott padgett, cbs news. i.c.e. officials will carry out raids as early as this weekend. the raids will continue sunday and continue over the course of multiple days. at least 2,000 immigrants will be targeted in at least ten major cities. they were deported but remain in the country illegally. last month president trump postponed the mass roundups after the date was leaked. and a young mother whose child died after they were released from a detention center has filed a multi-million-dollar

lawsuit blaming the facility. testifying before a house panel yesterday, the guatamalan woman said her daughter died due to inadequate treatment while at the medical center. >> translator: the world should know what is happening to so many children inside these i.c.e. detention facilities. >> her testimony comes a week after the inspector general of homeland security released a report citing overcrowded and unsanitary conditions at migrant detention centers. there was a claim by a 15-year-old girl who said she was molested by a border patrol agent while she was in yuma, arizona. labor secretary alex acosta is being called to resign. acosta was a u.s. attorney in south florida at the time and said the plea deal was the best he could get. >> he needed to go to jail.

>> reporter: for almost an hour, labor secretary alex acosta defended his actions. as u.s. attorney in miami when he oversaw the controversial plea deal with convicted sex offender jeffrey epstein. >> we did what we did because we wanted to see epstein go to jail. >> reporter: alex acosta says the state charges would have meant epstein would get off. it led to a watered down jail sentence of 13 months. >> there's a value to a short guilty plea because letting him walk, letting what the state attorney was ready to do, go forward, would have been absolutely awful. >> reporter: epstein's alleged victims were not informed of the plea or even consulted. the federal judge ruled the deal violates the ryes of the victims. on monday the 66-year-old multi-millionaire pleaded not

guilty in new york to new charges of sex trafficking of dozens of minor girls. reports say he recruited the young women to his homes in palm beach and new york. this week more women have come forward to say he abused them. this woman said she was 15. >> did jeffrey epstein rape you? >> yes, he raped me, forcefully raped me. >> acosta was asked if the victims were owed an apology. >> these victims were traumatized. w can't begin to understand what they went through, and they look at this and say, but why. and so you always look back and say what if. >> reporter: acosta's answers did not satisfy those asking him to step down. >> nothing justifies his misconduct, changes the very death.

he must go, he must resign. >> meanwhile barry krischer said the u.s. attorney's office always had the ability to file its own federal charges. krischer said a lengthy indictment was prepared but abanaf sret negotiations between acosta's and epstein's lawyers. overseas there are new tensions after iran apparently tried to stop a british oil tanker. three of its ships tried to stop the ship in the strait of hormuz. britain claims iran only backed down after verbal warnings from a uk navy vessel. the iranian national guard denied the allegations. iran said if it had seized orders to seize any ships, it would have done so immediately. this comes almost a week after a british ship seized an iranian tanger claiming iran was violating sanctions by taking oil to syria. yesterday iran's president warned britain would face

consequences over the seizure. and it was deja vu for members ofhewomen's national soccer team. they celebrated a second consecutive win with a ticker tape parade in new york city. yesterday thousands of fans cheered the team which is also fighting for equal pay. co-captain megan rapinoe called for unity. >> we have pink hair and purple lair, we got white girls and black girls and everything in between, straight girls and gay girls. hey! we have to be better we have to love more, hate less. >> the players are headed to california after the parade to attend the espy where they won best team trophy, and alec morgan won best female athlete. so coming up on the "morning news," a close call in arizona after a car collides with a large cactus. and a grim discovery in the search for a kentucky woman

a prickly situation in tucson, arizona. part of a giant cactus went through a car's windshield. authorities say a car was crossing the median yesterday when he hit the cactus. there were no serious injuries. police say the driver was arrested after they saw signs that he was impaired. a wild fare and serious allegations and new developments in the search for your a missing kentucky mother. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. cbs lexington affiliate wkyt reports human remains were found at a property connected to a missing mother of four. she was last seen january 4th. that's when she left a bar with a group of men to go to a home. the property where the woman was

discovered was her last known location. it's about 40 miles from the bar. the property belongs to family of a man being questioned in the case, and no one is currently in custody. "the salt lake tribune" reports the man accused of killing university of utah student mackenzie lueck has been charged with aggravated murder 31-year-old alou roy aja hue faces a possible death penalty if convicted. lueck disappeared last month. she was hit with blunt for trauma to the head and she was bound with zip ties and rope. she was found about 85 miles south of salt lake city. and "the wall street journal" reports pacific gas and electric knew for euros that hundreds of miles of aging power lines could spark wildfires and did not fix them. documents obtained by the journal showed that dozens of old steel towers, equipment, and power lines needed to be replaced.
