migrants from mexico into the u.s. laura podesta has more on this really shocking story. >> according to court documents it appears the crimes were motivated by money. the migrants told investigators they were paying $8,000 to be smuggled to los angeles or new jersey. one of the marines said he was expected to be paid $1,000 for his role. >> basically it's a shock to the system. >> the arrests happened as the marines stood in battalion formation. a spokeswoman sad the operation was carried out in public with the goal of sending a message.

>> as soon as the arrest happened, the officers are really talking and open dialogue with the marines. >> the inquiry is being done by the ncis. it began when a border patrol agent stopped two marines at the mexican/u.s. border. three undocumented migrants were hiding in their back seat. >> if and when those charges are brought to those marines, at that point we'll be able to release the identification of those marines plus the specifications of what they've actually been charged with. >> eight additional marines from camp pendleton were taken in for questioning about a separate matter. it's believed to be drug-related. all the accused between 18 and 22 and serving in their first tours of duty. the marine corpsaid ne of crazy stuff.

safer. north korea says its latest missile test was a warning to south korea over its plan to hold military exercises with the u.s. the tests involved two weapons. one was a tactile weapon. it flew some 230 miles before going down in the sea of japan. despite the mike pompeo told bloomberg nuclear talks could start in a couple of weeks. a man was arrested for killing his own family and then going on a shooting rampage. he allegedly shot his mother, father, and brother early yesterday. his father and brother died. they believe he then shot and killed his ex-girlfriend at a gas station. the gas station employee was injured. he shot and killed a fourth person on a bus. he was arrested two hours later.

a top executive for vaping company juul testified. others were questioned yesterday about their role in the teen vaping epidemic, jamie yuccas reports. >> reporter: children as young as 8 years old were targeted online and through summer camp according to an investigation. the company spent more than $200,000 to sponsor so-called wellness camps. >> i hope there was nothing that we did that made it appealing to them. >> reporter: the ceo apologized to parents in a new documentary, but teens are buying it because of their sweetness. the problem, contain nicotine. >> we had a very contentious relationship. i became very suspicious obviously.

>> reporter: the centers for disease control reports an 80% surge among high school students from 2017 to 2018. philip and caleb testified a juul representative approached them. even in san francisco a city that has voted to ban the sale of e-cigarettes, many including cory williams are still vaping. >> do people think it's safer to vape from cigarettes to e-cigarettes? >> i think it is. >> reporter: the food and drug administration is reviewing the product's safety but this week launched an ad campaign telling children to beware. >> do you know if you vape -- >> according to the fda, more than 4 million teenagers use

e-cigarettes. the company supports banning sales for those under 21 years old. jamie yuccas, cbs news, san francisco. a brutal heatwave that sent breaking records across western europe is finally expected to ease up today. yesterday paris set a new all-time record high of 109 degrees. in london, it hit 100 degrees. today it's expected to stay in the 80s in both cities. germany also set a new record at 107 degrees, and the netherlands recorded its highest temperature ever of 105 degrees. the uk says clie ma'am change has increased the likelihood and severity of heatwaves across europe. so coming up on the "morning news" now, the show will go on. how the woodstock 50th anniversary festival was and this sign, why the federal government could be getting involved. you see me.

dramatic body cam video shows officers breaking into a hot car to rescue two toddlers inside. it happened in an ohio walmart parking lot. the parents accidently locked their keys in the car with their 2-year-old and 3-year-old daughters inside in one of the hottest days in northeast ohio in more than a decade. both kids are okay. woodstock's 50s anniversary festival is saved, and vaping may be to blame for the severe lung damage that hospitalized a group of teenagers. those are some of the stories on this morning's newsstand. mississippi's "clarion-ledger" reports ole miss students who posed with signs could be punished by the doj. the three students were suspended from their fraternity house. it shows them standing in front of a bullet-ridden sign for a

civil rights leader. one was holding a shotgun and another was holding a semi-automatic weapon. the photo was posted on instagram in march. it's not clear if the frat students shot the sign or just stood in front of it. >> "the hollywood reporter" says bill cosby's insurer has settled janis dickinson's suit. it's stemming from comments his lawyer made in 2015. he called her story fabricated and a lie after she said she had been drugged and raped by cosby in the 1980s. yesterday during a press conference dickinson said the compensation does not diminish the damage done. >> nothing can ever erase the experience and memories of an assault. jail is where he belongs. but there aren't enough years left for him to pay. >> d amount in the settlement. the san diego "union

tribune" reports the blue pills being trade and sold on the streets are linked to at least four deaths within 24 hours. that's according to sheriff's officials. the pills come with a promise of a painkiller high, but no one knows what they contain. that makes them especially dangerous. several other nonfatal overdoses are said to be linked to the drug as well. the milwaukee "journal sentinel" says eight milwaukee teens were hospitalized with severe lung damage. that may have been caused by vaping. the wisconsin teens all suffered from extreme cough, shortness of breath, and fatigue. some had also lost weight from vomits and diarrhea. officials sate's unclear what exactly the teenagers inhaled. >> maybe they're doing off-brand juul. maybe they were making their own juul. >> vaping among teens has skyrocketed over the last few years. and "the new york times" says the woodstock 50 festival is saved with just weeked to spare.

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ it looked like a scene right out of a disaster movie. almost 70 cars derailed yesterday in missouri, dumping sand along the tracks. the train was headed to texas from wisconsin. no one was hurt. the cause of the derailment is under investigation. on the "cbs moneywatch" now, vet downn air pollution in california. wendy gillette is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, wendy. >> good morning, anne-marie.

gdp data will be released today, giving investors a first look at economic growth in the second quarter. on the earnings front notable companies reporting today include twitter, mcdonald's, colgate polmolive and pharmaceutical giant abbvie. stocks closed lower with designs on tech shares. the dow fell 128 points, the s&p 500 lost 15 points, and the nasdaq lost 82 points. apple will acquire intel in a billion dollar deal. intel can develop modems for devices that are not smartphones including personal computers and autonomous vehicles. apple was already buying intel modems for some of its iphones. the company will get 2,200 intel employees plus intellectual property and equipment. four automakers reached a deal with california to set stricter air pollution and

gas mileage standards than the trump proposal. ford, bmw, honda, and volkswagen signed the deal to increase gas mileage and greenhouse gas emissions requirements. they pushed to keep the mileage at about 30 miles per gallon. southwest airlines is warning of higher than expected costing following its extended grounding of the 737 max jet. it will not fly the jet until january. the move is expected to leave dozens of canceled flights and potentially higher ticket prices during the busy end-of-year holiday travel period. the faa grounded the boeing 737 max fleet in march after two deadly crashes. southwest announced it will no longer have flights into or out of new jersey's newark airport. anne-marie, that's a bummer for me.

we are getting a new look a. this image was captured by the hubble space telescope. the spiral galaxy has near perfect symmetry with its arms reaching out into space. according to scientists it has a lot of similarities to our milky way. a cat made a play during a league cup quarterfinal soccer match in utah. the animal executed a perfect outside run and was in clear line of a goal as the sides played on. >> f a s he had a touch on the ball there. wow. the cat's mls dreams were dashed soon after after the four-legged striker was safely removed from the field. a little bit of a close call there.

crest.ers.org... ...and start improving your health today. our top story this morning, 18 marines have been arrested in a human smuggling investigation. some are accused of helping smuggle migrants into the u.s. the arrests were made at camp pendleton, a california base near the u.s./mexico border. the marines are accused of crimes ranging from human smuggling to drug-related offenses. north korea says its latest missile test was a warning to south korea over its plans to hold military exercises with the u.s. one of the missiles was a new tactile type of weapon. it flew some 230 miles before going down in the sea of japan.

the warning comes as officials struggle to return to nuclear talks. and for the first time in 16 years the justice department says executions of inmates on death row will start again. jeff pegues reports. >> reporter: daniel lewis lee, a white supremacist, was convicted in 1999 of murdering a family of three, including an 8-year-old girl. the department of justice said lee and four other men would be put to death in december and january, the first executions under the federal death penalty since 2003. president trump has long said that he wanted to revive the federal death penalty, including after 11 people were shot and killed in a pittsburgh synagogue last year. >> people that do this, you have to bring back the death penalty. this is the worst form of terror. >> reporter: one reason for the federal moratorium was concerns of the drug cocktail for lethal
