>> sitting on the ground with my enad between my knees and vomiting up blood, and there's blood all down my shirt. >> ninan: how a perfect getaway turned into a near-death experience a newlywed couple won't soon forget. >> this is the cbs weekend news. >> ninan: good evening. i'm reena ninan. president trump is under fire tonight after an attack on another prominent african american member of congress. this time, the president lashed out on house democrat elijah cummings. it's the latest in a series of attacks on congressional leaders. paula reid begins our coverage tonight from washington. >> reporter: before heading out for a round of golf this morning, president trump launched a twitter attack against maryland congressman elijah cummings claiming his district is "a disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess." cummings' district includes much of the city of baltimore and reaches into the baltimore and howard counties.

shpetime ihis district to help clean up a very dangerous and filthy place. the attack appeared to be related on a july 18 hearing on board detention facilities where cummings sparred with kevin mcaleenan. >> we're doing our level best in a very challenging situation. >> what does that mean? what does that mean when a child is sitting in their own feces, can't take a shower? come on, man! >> reporter: today, the president insisted the border is clean, efficient, and well-run, just very crowded. cummings responded by tweeting that he goes home to his district daily and fights for his neighbors. he then urged the president to work with him on addressing prescription drug prices. baltimore is ranked as one of the most violent cities in the u.s. but the president's language today mirrored his previous attack against the so-called "squad" of four minority congresswomen where he asked, "why don't they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime

infested places from which they came?" house speaker nancy pelosi defended cummings, tweeting, "we all reject racist attacks against him and support his steadfast leadership." tonight city leaders spoke out. >> it is completely unacceptable for the profit of the united states of america to use his considerable employer and global voice to attack an american city. >> ninan: paula, any sense as to why he's launching this attack now? >> reporter: he clearly wants to draw attention to the struggles of a democratically controlled district. but by tweeting about baltimore, he's distracting from two notable accomplishments he had yesterday. first the supreme court told him he could begin using pentagon funds for construction of a border wall, and he struck a deal with guatemala that may help stem the flow of migrants. he has also been tweeting about antifa, the wall, and the muelvestigatn. reena. >> ninan: paula reid at the white house. thank you, paula. two american tourists have been

arrested in the deadly stabbing of a police officer in rome. finnegan lee elder and gabriel ehristian natale hjorth have been detained and expect to be charged soon. seth doane reports tonight from rome. o reporter: a tribute to the slain officer has been growing today on the rome street corner where mario cerciello rega, a ff-year-old newlywed and officer for the carabinieri police force was stabbed to death. the 19-year-old american suspects, who police say confessed, are being held inside the regina coeli prison. "i found he was stressed, that's for sure," finnegan lee elder's lawyer said, "but i don't think er's appropriate to do iaterviews." rvis all started early friday morning when italian police say the americans stole a backpacki, which include his cell phone. the man called the phone, and the americans demanded a gram of cocaine and 100 euros to give the bag back. they set up a meeting point

here, and the italian men timid off the carabinieri, who showed up in plain clothes. a scuffle ensued, and the carabinieri officer was stabbed to death. police said they reviewed surveillance video to track down the suspects. local media published this, which purportedly shows the icericans, though the carabinieri would not confirm the video. the carabinieri identified the americans and found them here at their hotel, just about a block away from the crime scene. inside their hotel room, they also found the murder weapon, a knife of considerable size, beich had been hidden away thind a removable ceiling tile. mlice say the young men were ready to leave italy the same day. fufuneral for the officer will be held monday at the church where he was married just 43 days ago. seth doane, cbs news, rome. am ninan: the family of one of the americans released a statement expressing their deepest condolences towards the officer.

they say they're shocked and bsmayed by the events and have not been able to have any communication with finnegan lee elder. in hong kong, an eighth weekend of violent protests has spiraled out of control. demonstrators are outraged over an attack by gang members last week. rtmy inocencio reports tonight from hong kong. >> reporter: rage and chaos in hong kong hit its highest peak yet. police saturday night stormed a ghbway station in the yuen long neighborhood, hitting people with batons and arresting protesters who refused to leave. it was the worst violence the city has seen since june and came after thousands of protesters again squared off against police for hours. protesters blocked roads and threw bricks, bottles, and umbrellas. police fired back with round after round of tear gas and rubber bullets. met this time, protesters wouldn't budge. they were better prepared and ready to fight.

right now, the protesters are trying to push back the riot police and it looks like they're succeeding. just in the past minutes or so, se riot police were throwing the first round of tear gas. we, ourselves, were sprayed but rsw it's only angered the crowd even more. angr're angry after a mob of men last weekend brutally attacked protesters and innocent bystanders in this town's subway. the men are believed to be members of organized crime gangs pd it took police roughly 40 minutes to respond. >> we want to demonstrate what justice is. >> reporter: furious protesters today tried to take the fight back to the neighborhoods where the gangs are from, but were repelled repeatedly by police. this is worst chaos we have seen on hong kong's streets. it's gotten worse every single week. the fear is if this continues to escalate, the people's cberation army will step in. ramy inocencio, cbs news, hong kong.

>> ninan: david ortiz has been released from a massachusetts hospital nearly two months after being shot in the dominican republic. ble former boston red sox slugger, also known as big papi, was shot in early noon during an amburg in santo domingo. police say a friend of ortiz was the intended target. so far, 14 people have been arrested in the case. four american athletes are among those injured following a deadly collapse at a nightclub in south korea. it happened overnight in the coyote ugly nightclub in gwangju. kenneth craig reports. >> reporter: it was a night of houtbration that without warning gave way to chaos as a balcony collapsed at a south korean nightclub. olympic gold medallist kaleigh gilchrist was among the american athletes injured during the ordeal, left with a deep cut in her leg, so severe, it required surgery. the american men's and women's teams were at the club toasting to the women's world

championship victory. three other u.s.a. water polo players were hurt. more than a dozen people were injured, including eight international athletes competing in the world aquatic championships in gwangju. two south koreans were killed when the elevated platform came crashing down. cell phone video shows club- trys trying to hold up a section of the balcony to prevent it from totally coming down. a south korean fire official said the upper floor collapsed because the steel supporting it thuldn't withstand the weight. police have detained and are now questioning two owners of the club and two workers about whether that structure was legally added to the nightclub. pndreds of people were inside this club when this happened, but u.s.a. water polo officials say all of their athletes are accounted for and safe, reena. >> ninan: that's so good to hear. do we know how kaleigh gilchrist is doing? >> reporter: her father posted a statement on facebook earlier today. ie said she had surgery. she is out of surgery, she is

resting but he is not sure when she will be able to travel. >> ninan: thank you. a new york city father is charged with manslaughter and criminal neglect homicide in the death of his twin children. police say the father forgot about the children in his car when he went to work friday morning. when he got off later that afternoon, he found the children unconscious in the back seat. he tried calling 911, but the children were already dead. >> the vehicle had tinted tindows, so it was almost odpossible for anybody to notice that the children were there. >> ninan: detectives believe that this was a tragic accident. a group of girl scouts in minnesota are safe tonight after two of them were hurt in the wilderness where lightning struck. mpingroup was camping in a forest near the minnesota-canada border when strong storms overtook the area friday night. herescue team found the group early this morning. rescuers say the two girls were not directly hit but may have experienced ground current.

they were taken to the hospital and released. nsifce are intensifying their oanhunt for two teen murder suspects in canada. they're accused of killing three people, including an american woman and her australian boyfriend. janet shamlian reports on the new efforts under way to find ffem. >> reporter: heavily armed canadian police are now canvassing homes door to door, as well as checking trains, using dogs and drones in the search for these two teens halieved to have gone on a killing spree and on the run for two weeks. the checkpoints are 2,000 miles from where the duo is believed to have killed three people, including chynna deese from north carolina and her australian boyfriend lucas inwler, touring the brick wilderness when they were found shot to death next to their band. police say a canadian professor is the third victim. rdter finding the teens' burned- out s.u.v. and two confirmed sightings, police initially believed the two are on foot but now say they could be long gone.

>> it may be possible someone was not aware who they were providing assistance to. >> reporter: it is the daily yeadline in canada and has the small town of gillam in northern manitoba on edge. >> a lot of community members haven't gotten sleep. >> reporter: here at home, friends of chynna deese will say goodbye today at a memorial in charlotte. the canadian army has now arrived in the region and is assisting with the search. the question is whether these teenagers have had help and are already out of the region. reena. >> ninan: janet shamlian in los angeles. eo least eight people have been killed after two earthquakes, magnitude 5.4 and 5.9, hit the philippines early this morning. many people were in their homes when the earthquake struck. at least 60 people were hurt, no erunami warnings have been issued. t,night, a success for nasa in its latest mission to space. space-x dragon cargo ship docked with the international space station today.

50 feet. here's jamie yuccas. >> reporter: the tropical island of st. kitts seemed like the perfect choice for a honeymoon to clay and acaimie chastain. the indianapolis couple was hiking a dormant volcano. clay found a rope leading down into the crater. his wife stayed on top. >> i was holding on to the ropes walking backwards. the next thing i know i was sitting on the ground with my bad between my knees vomiting up blood and there's blood all down my shirt. i think a rope snapped and i fell, but we're not entirely certain because i don't remember falling at all. >> reporter: when his wife reached him, clay had no idea where he was. >> he was incredibly lethargic and he had no sense of balance so he was like an intoxicated person is the best way to describe it. >> acaimie had to push, pull, and coax her husband ne >> and i was completely freaked

out because i knew we were entirely alone. >> reporter: after nearly four hours, acaimie was finally able to get cell service and call for help. >> i think it was just by god's grace that we were able to make it all the way down, to make it t safety, that i was able to get an ambulance there. >> reporter: clay sustained a serious head injury. the couple's family raised nearly $30,000 to transport clay back to a hospital in the states >> and he had a fracture at the base of the skull in the temporal bone. this is a very serious injury. fortunately, the fracture was are where the bones did not actually become displaced. they stayed together. >> reporter: doctors expect he'll make a full recovery, and the newlyweds say when they return to indianapolis, they'll enjoy the rest of their honeymoon on the couch. jamie yuccas, cbs news, l.a. >> ninan: still ahead, a rare look inside the nerve center for u.s. air force drone missions around the world.

>> ninan: finally tonight, an emotional sight that brought a ghave young firefighter to tears. for the first time in his life he saw the american flag in all its star spangled glory. 'sre's norah o'donnell. >> o'donnell: it's the most treasured symbol of our country. e ifine if you couldn't see the red, white, and blue. that's exactly what happened to peuglas county, georgia, firefighter spencer caradine. th i never knew that there was a different red than my eyes. an o'donnell: spencer is islorblind, and he only recently found out, all because of his fellow firefighter, jordan gardner. ne when i realized he couldn't see what i saw, i just-- i wanted to be able to fix it. >> reporter: jordan ordered him ppair of special glasses and planned a big surprise at the firehouse on the fourth of july.

stabbed to death last night near the hotel where the two suspects were staying. both suspects are 19 and they both recently graduated from mill valley. we are there now and we spoke with some people who know them. >> reporter: they both graduated from this high school in 2018. both played varsity sports. getting mixed reaction from folks who know the two suspects. some folks say they are not too surprised about the murder allegation and arrest. italian police and both suspects are 19 years old. finnegan elder is from san francisco and gabriel natale- hjorth from mill valley. >> i have known him since he was born and i am in shock. >> reporter: most neighbors know finnegan elder as sin. he played football for sacred heart high school in san francisco. later trent sold
