shooting threats have been detected and averted since the tragedies in el paso, texas and dayton, ohio. in the last two weeks, authorities made arrests in las vegas, chicago, connecticut, ohio and florida. this newly released body cam video shows police in daytona beach arresting a 15-year-old o dly reatened in a video game chat room to bring an m-15 to school and kill at least seven people. police took that threat seriously and the boy's mother tried to plead with authorities. >> he's my little boy. he wouldn't do anything wrong. >> the recent mass shootings have fueled calls for gun control legislatation. yesterday presidpoke t ofhe nra and reportedly said universal background checks are off the table. the white house is pushing back on those claims.

shooting, a lot of promises and then not much done at all. >> they call it the slippery slope. >> reporter: at the white house yesterday, president trump expressed concern about new gun control legislation. >> we have very, very strong background checks right now. >> reporter: he instead pivoted to mental health issues. >> i said it 100 times, it is not the gun that pulls the trigger, it is the person. >> reporter: in the days following mass shootings in dayton and el paso that killed 31 people, the president delivered a more urgent message. >> i took it about meaningful, add that word, meaningful background checks. >> reporter: but stopped short calling for background check, something democrats say has broad support among americans from both parties. >> i have yet to meet someone

including republicans and gun owners who is not concerned about the level of gun violence that we have in this country. >> reporter: national rifle association president wayne lapierre tweeted he spoke withe did not sit well with pete buttigieg. >> even this president says he's going to do something about background checks and then word comes out today that he's consulted with his masters at the nra and they told him, sorry, you can't do that. it raises the very simple question, who's in charge? >> reporter: house democrats passed background check legislation earlier this year, but the bills have stalled in the republican-led senate. and here's some hope, senior administration officials tell cbs news that talks with the justice department are ongoing, rega rega regarding legislative and executive action

powerful in some places than it has been in years. meanwhile, the u.s. special envoy to afghanistan is heading to qatar and the afghan capital to resume peace talks aimed at ending 18 years of military intervention. david martin recently reported from inside syria on the fight against isis and has this report. >> reporter: fighters in syria taking the oath of allegiance to isis. and vowing to fight on. nearly six months after the fall of the last pockets of territory that made up their so-called caliphate. it is a propaganda video. but it represents a reality acknowledged by secretary of state pompeo to "cbs this morning." >> what we said is the caliphate is begun and there is always risk there will be a resurgence. >> reporter: a recent report said isis had solidified its insurgent capabilities in iraq and was resurging in syria.

the report cited estimates that isisti has between 14 and 18,000 members in iraq and syria, and the opportunity to recruit more from among tens of thousands of refugees living in poorly guarded camps. the u.s. has 5200 troops in iraq, and nearly 1,000 in syria, where the top commander for the middle east, general frank mckenzie, recently told cbs news, u.s. special forces are helping local tribes track down isis fighters. >> they try to get in the desert up here, empty quarter desert of southeastern syria and our partners go out and get them and we help them do that. >> reporter: isis is still capable of suicide bombings, assassinations and ambushes. >> is it gaining strength in your opinion? >> it is complicated. than they were three or four years ago. >> reporter: in afghanistan, isis claimed responsibility for

"the philadelphia inquirer" reports the city's police commissioner abruptly resigned. it comes amid allegations that members of his department engaged in sexual harassment and racial and gender discrimination against two female employees. in a lawsuit, one of the women claims ross ignored her complaints about another officer's sexual harassment because she ended a two-year affair with the commissioner in 2011. philadelphia mayor jim kenny says ross had not adequately responded to the allegations. ross refused the request for comment. "the los angeles times" reports on new health guidelines, they suggest that more women should consider a gene test for hereditary breast or ovarian cancer. especially if they have already survived cancer once.

when genes called brca 1 and brca 2 mutate, they can't repair damage as well, that increases the risk of certain cancers. gene testing allows certain women to consider steps to lower risks such as preventive mastectomy. most cancers are not caused by brca mutations though. "the new york times" reports president trump said american jews who vote democratic show quote, a total lack of knowledge or great disloyalty. it triggered an uproar from critics who said he was engaging in anti-semitic stereotypes. it is the latest on his attacks on democratic muslim congresswomen ilhan omar and rashida tlaib. the two suggested that the u.s. cut off aid to israel over its alleged treatment of palestinians. mr. trump questi democrats would defend them over israel. still to come, get ready for those holiday travel crowds. experts predict a record number of air travelers this labor day.

university's men's basketball team sister jean turned 100 today. yesterday, legoland presented her with a statue complete with her loyola colors, striped scarf and gls. legoland says it took more than 30 hours to build the 2 1/2 foot statue and it consists of 10,000 lego bricks. it will be on display at legoland discovery center in chicago until the end of october before moving to the university. how cute. on the "cbs moneywatch," the busiest travel day this labor day holiday and why walmart is suing tesla. diane king hall is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, diane. >> good morning, anne-marie. today will be another busy day 's, targ and nordstrom the biggest names reporting. other notable names scheduled for today, jumia tech and l brands. stocks fell tuesday with the financial sector leading the declines, the dow slid 173 points. the s&p 500 lost 23. and the nasdaq was down 54.

walmart is suing tesla, the installed solar panels that caught fire on some store rooftops. walmart says the fires broke out at seven stores between 2012 and 2018, causing millions of dollars in damage. walmart says tesla engaged in, quote, widespread systemic negligence. tesla has not commented on the lawsuit. marvel studios is set to part ways with sony pictures spider-man franchise. the issue was reportedly over the profit sharing structure. sony previously owned the rights to spider-man. when tobey maguire played theer then in y announced a hip wi di . e crversbe recey crbe more environmentally friendly. the toymaker says packaging for new products will be mostly hasbro plans to stop using

>> reporter: flying just above greenland's glaciers and icebergs, nasa scientists are dropping probes into the ocean. >> drop, drop, drop. >> reporter: trying to measure the temperature and salinity of warming arctic waters. josh willis of nasa's jet propulsion laboratory is four years into this mission. >> we think of greenland as a block of ice under a hair dryer, but really the oceans are doing a lot of the work too. >> reporter: greenland's ice sheet is melting six times faster than it was in the 1980s. and while warm air is a known culprit, willis' team is trying to understand the role oceans are playing. they call their project oceans melting greenland or omg. greenland to raise sea levels by 25 feet worldwide. we don't think it will happen right away, but just how fast it dote through the
