shooting threats have been detected and averted since the tragedies in el paso, texas and dayton, ohio. in the last two weeks, authorities made arrests in las vegas, chicago, connecticut, ohio and florida. this newly released body cam video shows police in daytona beach arresting a 15-year-old o dly reatened in a video game chat room to bring an m-15 to school and kill at least seven people. police took that threat seriously and the boy's mother tried to plead with authorities. >> he's my little boy. he wouldn't do anything wrong. >> the recent mass shootings have fueled calls for gun control legislatation. yesterday presidpoke t ofhe nra and reportedly said universal background checks are off the table. the white house is pushing back on those claims.

shooting, a lot of promises and then not much done at all. >> they call it the slippery slope. >> reporter: at the white house yesterday, president trump expressed concern about new gun control legislation. >> we have very, very strong background checks right now. >> reporter: he instead pivoted to mental health issues. >> i said it 100 times, it is not the gun that pulls the trigger, it is the person. >> reporter: in the days following mass shootings in dayton and el paso that killed 31 people, the president delivered a more urgent message. >> i took it about meaningful, add that word, meaningful background checks. >> reporter: but stopped short calling for background check, something democrats say has broad support among americans from both parties. >> i have yet to meet someone

including republicans and gun owners who is not concerned about the level of gun violence that we have in this country. >> reporter: national rifle association president wayne lapierre tweeted he spoke withe did not sit well with pete buttigieg. >> even this president says he's going to do something about background checks and then word comes out today that he's consulted with his masters at the nra and they told him, sorry, you can't do that. it raises the very simple question, who's in charge? >> reporter: house democrats passed background check legislation earlier this year, but the bills have stalled in the republican-led senate. and here's some hope, senior administration officials tell cbs news that talks with the justice department are ongoing, rega rega regarding legislative and executive action

powerful in some places than it has been in years. meanwhile, the u.s. special envoy to afghanistan is heading to qatar and the afghan capital to resume peace talks aimed at ending 18 years of military intervention. david martin recently reported from inside syria on the fight against isis and has this report. >> reporter: fighters in syria taking the oath of allegiance to isis. and vowing to fight on. nearly six months after the fall of the last pockets of territory that made up their so-called caliphate. it is a propaganda video. but it represents a reality acknowledged by secretary of state pompeo to "cbs this morning." >> what we said is the caliphate is begun and there is always risk there will be a resurgence. >> reporter: a recent report said isis had solidified its insurgent capabilities in iraq and was resurging in syria.

the report cited estimates that isisti has between 14 and 18,000 members in iraq and syria, and the opportunity to recruit more from among tens of thousands of refugees living in poorly guarded camps. the u.s. has 5200 troops in iraq, and nearly 1,000 in syria, where the top commander for the middle east, general frank mckenzie, recently told cbs news, u.s. special forces are helping local tribes track down isis fighters. >> they try to get in the desert up here, empty quarter desert of southeastern syria and our partners go out and get them and we help them do that. >> reporter: isis is still capable of suicide bombings, assassinations and ambushes. >> is it gaining strength in your opinion? >> it is complicated. than they were three or four years ago. >> reporter: in afghanistan, isis claimed responsibility for

"the los angeles times" reports on new health guidelines, they suggest that more women should consider a gene test for hereditary breast or ovarian cancer. especially if they have already survived cancer once.
