afternoon for sure. this is the perfect place for start of the warm-up here if chrissy field. you can see the golden gate under mostly sunny skies. just a beautiful afternoon. catching the sunshine across the region. a live look, ux see blue skies over downtown san francisco. 24 hour temperature change, much warmer compared to yesterday at this time by several degrees. if you've been outside, you have felt the difference. from below average temperatures yesterday to above average temperatures today, san francisco, a high of 72 as we head through the rest of the afternoon. oakland, 77. san jose, 84. concord, 91 degrees. two to four degrees above average for this time of year. this is just the beginning of the warm-up. we'll talk about how warm it will get where you are coming up. >> thank you. and i'm emily turner at the

live news desk. a live look at president trump speaking right now in lieu byville, kentucky, to the american veterans convention. one of the major topics is gun control. he's expected to cover suicide prevention and access to health care along with education and other issues of concern to the veterans. before departing from washington, dc, the president talked about gun control and claimed the u.s. had strong background checks for gun purchases and wants to work with democrats to, quote, fix the loopholes. >> we have a lot of background checks right now. gun owners can tell you that. others can tell you that. there are certain weaknesses and we want to fix the weaknesses. i'm concerned no matter what we agree to, i'm concerned the democrats will say, oh, well, we now want this. it's a slippery slope. >> reporter: the president spoke with the nra president

yesterday. trump also told reporters today that he agrees something does have to be done about the situations with guns. we'll continue to follow the story. back to you. and the trump administration announcing a plan to hold undocumented families detained together indefinitely. there was a 20 day limit to holding children. the move is exampled to face court challenges. >> reporter: acting department of homeland security secretary announced changes to the way the u.s. handled migrant children. >> no child should part of a scheme to manipulate the immigration suspect. >> reporter: it would end the agreement that requires the government to release detained families in 20 days. under the new plan, the families would stay together and be held indefinitely. so far this year, the federal government siz almost 475,000

families have been apprehended at the southwest border, 90% of whom crossed illegal. they call the agreement outdated and the changes are necessary because the current system is fuelling the surge of the migrants to the border. >> the rule will reduce the unprecedented volume of family units straining the resourcesover the department and put children at risk. >> reporter: the american civil liberties union called the new regulations another cruel attack on children with the anti-immigrant policies, adding the government should not be jailing kids. and meantime, less than two weeks before the scheduled trip to denmark, president trump canceled the visit over the purchase of greenland. the prime minister says the country is not for sale and called the president's interest in buying the island absurd. president trump responded this morning, calling the response nasty and inappropriate.

and new at noon, words of hate discovered on one of of the south bay's biggest college campuses. the fliers were sound on the san jose state campus. and similar flyers posted across the country and immediately removed. the university president said, quote, our community will not tolerate hatred, discrimination, or forms of social violence against individuals or groups on the basis of race, ethnicity, and immigrant status. today was the first day of class. at this point, it's unclear what was written on the flyers. and take a good look at that guy. this is the suspect involved in a pair of auto burglars near uc berkeley in the area of telegraph avenue. laptops and computer equipment were stolen. if you have information, police want to hear from you. and the case of a two alarm

blaze that broke out a little after midnight in san jose at a home on sa far ri drive. and two people managed to escape without major injuries after their small plane crashed in the pacific ocean. the plane went down about 5:50 yesterday afternoon in the waters off half moon bay. the plane's pilot was in the bay area from colorado to visit friends who were flying nearby in another plane. >> reported small aircraft down. >> reporter: he just recently bought the plane and his friends were recording images of it in flight for the first time. >> we were a few thousand feet up. a little west of the coast and lost power all of a sudden. and there wasn't a bang, wasn't any kind of an indication it was the motor. it seems to be fuel related. >> the pilot of the other plane

contacted authorities for help. coast guard rescuers pulled the pilot and the male passenger to safety. and brazil's amazon rain forest is burning at a record rate. large portionsover the country covered in smoke. there have been nearly 73,000 fires there, an 80% increase compared with the same period in 2018. it could strike a devastating blow to to fight against climate change. the area is under a state of emergency. more on the story coming up at 5:00. . of and in atlanta, the search is on for a shooter who opened fire on four female students. it happened last night near clark atlanta university. an argument broke out and someone opened fire in a crowd of about 200 people. the shooter escaped. the victims are in sable condition. the students start classes today. and mass shootings created a new normal for students. as kids head back to school,

they're learning how to stay safe during an attack. >> jackie ward continues the back to school cover in san mateo. there's a new effort to keep students safe. >> reporter: officers lead teachers and students through active shooter drills every school year. today, we hear from a former teacher and a current parent about the state of school safety. >> it's more than just an educator doing a drill with the student. it's a community effort. >> reporter: she was a teacher before becoming president of the education association. since the deadly shootings at marjory stoneman douglas high school in parkland, florida, students have taken challenge and spoken up for gun control. >> there's no longer a code of silence. the code op silence has gone away. the teens understand the importance of making statements. >> reporter: in addition to the earthquake safety drills, our

kids are now experiencing active shooter drills. covered in fake blood, calling out for help, and knowing the best escape route is the reality for a lot of students across the country. that weighs heavily on parents' minds. >> every time they go to school, i think about it. and worry about it. it doesn't go away. >> my day, it was nuclear war drills. this day, it's the fire drills, the shooting drills. and the other things that may have to navigate through. >> reporter: as part of the project this summer, the unified school district made a number of security updates, including cameras, gates, and fencing along the perimeter of the campuses. the physical barrierings continue to go up and they're encouraging students to speak out. >> we need to work as a country. and obliterate the hate i
