and good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters in new york. anne-marie green is off. i'm brook silva-braga. good to be with you. president trump met with egypt's president a short time ago. so far tariffs and a trade war with china have dominated the headlines, and the president said there was progress in talks with china. >> china called last night, our top trade people, and said let's get back to the tables. i have great respect for them. very positive development for the world. >> laura podesta is in new york with more. laura, what other meetings are planned for the president today? >> good morning, brook. the president is scheduled to sit down one on one with the leaders of both india and germany as trade continues to be the final talking point during the final day of the summit.

while most americans were sleeping, president trump was back at it with the word leaders at the group of seven summit in france. yesterday president trump unveiled a broad new trade deal with japan. >> it's a great being transaction and we've agreed in principle it's billions and billions of dollars. tremendous for the farmers. >> leaders have otherwise agreed on little else. a senior trump official told cbs news the white house feels french president emmanuel macron is spending too much time on climate change and gender equality. mr. trump also talked trade with new uk prime minister boris johnson who said he's not a fan of tariffs. reporters asked president trump if he has any second thoughts about the escalation of the trade war battle with china.

>> might as well. >> you have second thoughts. >> i have second thoughts about everything. >> later it was said what he meant is he wishes the tariffs on china were even higher. but, brook, as you mentioned, the president told reporters earlier china called and wants to make a deal, so leaders of the two countries will be back at the negotiating table soorng and the president will be offering a press conference about china later today. >> thanks. as laura mentioned, there will be a press conference later. cbs news will broadcast it as president trump and president emmanuel macron have a joint conference later this morning. forecasters report the toear hurricane strength and possibly impact puerto rico later this week. tropical storm dorian could possibly turn toward tation wfor has the details.

>> good morning. we're watching tropical storm dorian. it is a very small storm and it continues to move to the west and slowly has been intensifying here. national weather center h indicated that it's at 50 miles an hour. today, possibly tomorrow it will be passing over the barbados and islands. the track does intensify that to a hurricane likely staying to the south, but still close to that island there, and as it approaches haiti and the dominican republic, well, the intensity goes down because it is encountering some wind shear and interacting with the land. watching that moisture as well, in addition to that, we have watches and warnings for barbados and a lot of moisture which could lead to flooding along the louisiana coast. we're getting herb rain, but a front will be moving through and pushing it out and drying it out by the middle of the week.

i'm dave warren for cbs news. brazil's government is sending troops to battle massive wildfires as the amazon continues to burn at an alarming rate. the fires have gained international attention because of the rain forest's important role in emissions. >> reporter: we are in rio branco. this is in the western part of brazil. you may be able to make the haze out. that's from the natural smoke of the fires. the state we're in is one of six that immediately requested the offer of military assistance from brazil's government to fight the fires. officials announced the availability of more than 40,000 troops and military aircraft yesterday, but only after days of pressure here in brazil and internationally, critics believe the policies of jair bolsonaro have dramatically worsened the problem. many of the fires are believed

to have been set by farmers clearing land. in a televised address saturday, bolsonaro said his government would crack down on illegal activity in the amazon, but many fear it's too little too late. the amazon is considered key in the battle against climate change. it's also home to a uniquely biodie diverse ecosystem to its indigenous communities. there have been 9,500 since thursday. manuel bojorquez, rio branco, brazil. in hong kong, pro-democracy protests took ageus turn as police engaged demonstrators and shot tear gas into the crowds. yesterday anti-government demonstrators advanced on police in a residential area of the chinese territory. officers issued warnings but were mostly ignored. authorities confirm a warning

shot was fired at people and a group was hurling objects at them. police deployed two water cannons, firing at barricades and demonstrators. at least 32 were arrested. back home, it's a case of testing boundaries of law. a nasa astronaut is accused of identity theft from space. jan its shamlian is in houston with the story. >> reporter: astronaut ann mcclain is facing what may be the first allegation of a crime in space. part of a battle with estranged spouse summer warden. warden says mcclain accessed her account from the nasa space station. >> what she did is use my personal log-in credentials to log in and look at my financial products and even a new account that i set up. >> reporter: warren says the

>> that, of course, is legendary singer stevie wonder headlining a concert yesterday in dayton, ohio. they raised money for the shooting victims from the mass shooting earlier this month. it was hosted by comedian dave chappelle. jon stewart also took part. other artists included chance the rapper. a controversial sheriff will run again for his old job and a twist in a sniper case. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand this morning. the "l.a. times" reports a sheriff's deputy falselyim-yd ai last weday investigators to evacuate a nearby apartment complex and shut down mass transit. they discovered it did not happen and he used a knife to create fake bullet holes in his shirt. >> there was no ballistic evidence in the parking lot at

all. there were no bullets recovered from the point of impact. there were no cars struck by gunfire. >> reinosa has been relieved of his duties. he did not provide a motive for fabricating the shooting. the matter will be referred to the district attorney. the "arizona central" reports joe arpaio will run for sheriff in 2020. the 87-year-old announced on wednesday he'll seek another term. he previously served for 24 years, lost the election in 2016. arpaio was a staunch foe of illegal immigration and vowed to open tent cities. the latest announcement, august 25th, is the anniversary of the 2017 pardon granted by president trump on a misdemeanor contempt of court conviction over

immigration patrols. and another controversial conservative wants to hold office. joe walsh is apologizing for race it comments he once made while announcing plans to run against mr. trump in the gop presidential primary. he has become a consistent critic in recent months. quoted as, nuts, erratic. walsh now joins former massachusetts governor as the only gop challengers to the president. and the "indystar" is reporting the colts owner jim irsay is keeping the door cracked for an andrew luck comeback. i guess anything could happen. irsay suggested a future in which he could envision the 29-year-old could return to football. in a shock announcement luck announced his retirement from the nfl. >> i'm in pain. i'm still in pain. i've been in this cycle which feels like -- i mean it's been four years for this injury/rehab

on the "cbs moneywatch," target is teaming up with disney, and why u.s. lobster exports are sinking. marc liverman is manning the post at the new york stock exchange this morning. good to see you. good morning. >> good morning. orders for july are set to be available today. stock futures are pointing lower following the latest escalation in the trade war with china. on friday, wall street ended the day sharply lower as president trump said he was ordering american companies to start looking for an alternative to china as beijing imposed retaliatory tariffs on u.s. imports. the dow sank 623 points, the s&p 500 dropped 75 points, and the nasdaq fell 239 points.

is target is hoping to bring the magic of disney into some of its own stars starting this fall. the indianapolis-based retailer says it's opening 25 permanent disney branded shops in october. it will open 40 more by 2020. it will offer princess items as well as feature disney a marv and dy aracte it also launched an online disney experience on its strike. more than 20,000 at&t workers went on strike saturday over what the union is calling unfair labor practices. technicians and others in nine states who install and maintain the wireless carrier's business and residential telecom network are involved in the strike. talks have stalled. a spokesperson for at&t says the strike benefits no one. the old agreement between the two parties expired on august 3rd. lobster experts from u.s. to china are hitting rock bottom

while exports from canada are rising. the u.s. ex-ported 80% less to beijing this year than last year. it comes as china, a huge and growing customer, slapped tariffs on the seafood and other products during july of 2018 during trade. it slapped heavy tariffs on the u.s. imported seafood and other products during rising trade tensions. canadians catch the same kind of species as u.s. lobstermen. an angel has fallen. the lionsgate action film landed at the top of the box office this weekend. >> don't move, don't move. i'm coming for you. >> the third film in the fallen franchise coming after "an angel has fallen" stars gerrard

. our top stories this morning, world leaders are gathering for a third day at the g7 summit in the south of france. trade issues with china have dominated the headlines, and this morning trump said china contacted american officials overnight and wanted to make a trade deal. tropical storm dorian is maintaining strength as it churns its way toward the caribbean. forecasters prodigit it could ens intensify to a hurricane by wednesday and impact puerto rico and the dominican republic. portions of barbados, st. lucia, st. vincent, and the grenadines could get up to 6 inches of rain. cases of viruses have been reported in 26 states. scientists are working on a
