barreling toward the u.s. dorian is pounding the northwestern bahamas this morning with winds of 175 miles per hour. some 30 inches of rain could fall there. a life-threatening storm surge of up to 23 feet is possible. a hurricane warning is now in effect for parts of florida's east coast. dorian is a threat from florida to north carolina. cbs news weather producer david parkinson is predicting the unpredictable path of the storm. >> well, good morning. the storm has barely moved. it'g a little bit toward the north. that's an indication that we're starting to see maybe a shift to the north for florida to avoid seeing a landfall. right now the winds are at 175 pliels an hour. it ee moving to the west at 2 miles an hour and it's still off the west palm beach coast, but it's unfortunately way too close for comfort.

here's the concern. it goes all the way up the florida coastline. by tuesday morning it's still a category 4. by wednesday, a category 3 with 100-mile-an-hour winds sitting off jacksonville. you can see the leftp the flori all the way up the georgia ca by thursday even it's ju rona, dot pay h attention to the center line. pay attention to the fact that you're in the cone. if you're under evacuation, you need to follow them. here's the deal. we've got to wait for the high-pressure ridge to break down and the cone to scoot up. the question is when will it do that. we just don't know. the key here, we have a very serious storm very close to florida. david parkinson, cbs news. across the southeast

evacuations have been issued affecting millions. the national hurricane center says rainfall could produce flash floods from florida's southeast coast to georgia and the carolinas. l in ona h, hilary, how are people there preparing? >> reporter: wendy, some people are hunkering down, getting ready to ride out the storm. others are getting ready to evacuate. here in florida, nine counties are under evacuation orders. in daytona beach where we are right now, those evacuation orders begin at 10:00 a.m. today. this all as hurricane dorian batters across the bahamas overnight as a powerful category 5 storm. it's one of the strongest atlanta hurricanes ever recorded and the strongest ever to make landfall. >> this is probably the most saddened and worst day of my life to address the bahamian people. >> reporter: the national

hurricane center says the islands are likely being hit by a life-threatening storm surge and catastrophic winds. dorian's intensity and unpredictability continue to surprise forecasters, but even as it crept west toward florida, it's unclear if it will make a direct strike over the u.s. and authorities aren't taking any chances. mandatory evacuation orders have been posted here at daytona beach and in coastal communities as far away as north carolina. >> the strength of this storm cannot be underestimated. >> reporter: states of emergency have been declared in florida, georgia, and the carolinas. officials say even if dorian veers back out to sea, the region is still facing days of devastating rains and wind. >> it seems to be one of the biggest hurricanes we've ever seen, and that's a problem. that's a problem. >> reporter: dallas-ft. worths are already getting ready for dorian's aftermath. emergency supplies and power trucks have been positioned to move in once the coast is clear.

and travelers will want to check with their airline bef various airports in florida will be closing today including ft. lauderdale, west palm, and back over to you. ahead on "cbs this morning," am of correspondents in ne florida. now to the deadly shooting ram pain in texas. cbs news has learned the identity of the gunman behind the attack. 36-year-old seth ator was shot and killed by police saturday. our cbs station in dallas-ft. worth kvtv reports ator was fired from his job just hours before the shooting. seven people were killed and 22 others hurt, including three police officers when ator went on a shooting spree from midland to odessa. david begnaud spoke to relatives of one of the victims.

>> there's a shooting going on in odessa. >> reporter: the violent rampage that began on a texas interstate saturday started with a traffic stop. state troopers had pulled over a man who opened fire on them with an ar-15-type assault rifle, and then he took off. the shooter ditched his vehicle and hijacked a postal service van, driving around and shooting randomly at people. >> we have an active shooter on the interstate. >> reporter: the deadly chase ended outside of a movie theater. an eyewitness recorded the gunman barreling toward a police vehicle that was blocking the road. officers opening fire, killing the gunman. the seven victims who died range in age from 15 to 57. among those killed was 29-year-old postal carrier mary granados. >> i basically heard her scream. >> reporter: we spoke to her identical twin sister rosy who was on the phone with mary when she was shot.

>> you know people in the public are horrified to hear what happened. it's another mass shooting event about a month after what happened in el paso. what are your thoughts? >> i think that he could have taken the car without having to kill her, you know, just -- he could have taken the car. that's it. that's all he needed. he didn't have to take my sister. >> that was david begnaud reporting. people living in odessa, texas, gathered sunday to mourn the victims killed in that shooting spree. both mayors of odessa and midland spoke at the vigil and expressed solidarity with each other's cities. president trump is condemning the shooting in texas, calling it a, quote, wicked attack, but stopped short of supporting gun cont committed to working with congress on ways to prevent mass shootings. after the el paso and dayton shootings that killed 31 people last month, president trump said he wanted tougher gun laws, but

he later reversed his position. yesterday the president said the latest shooting has not changed anything. >> for the most part, as strong as you make your background checks, they would not have stopped any of it. so it's a big problem. it's a mental problem. it's a big problem. >> we're averaging about 300 mass shootings a year. no other country comes close, so, yes, this is [ bleep ] up. >> acting homeland security secretary kevin mcaleenan also weighed in on the texas shooting. he said such attacks should absolutely be considered a homeland security threat. students in hong kong are planning to strike today as a continuation of nearly three months of anti-government protests. over the weekend protesters used burning barricades to block roads near hong kong's airport and damaged a train station. demonstrators also threw gali b

passes. forecasters say it will be a day-long assault. in other news former secretary of defense james mattis is speaking out, and kevin hart is recovering from a car accident. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. "usa today" reports comedian kevin hart suffered major back injuries after the car he was riding in veered off a southern california road and rolled down an embankment.hart was of two ps in his vintage 1970 plymouth barracuda when it smashed through a wooden fence on a malibu road early yesterday morning. a crash report indicates a friend of hart's was driving the car when it went out of control. the report says the driver was not under the influence of alcohol. cbsnews.com reports on font former defensere televisio interview. he called mr. trump an unusual interview in an interview with

keep boeing's 737 max fleet grounded into the holiday travel season. american announced over the weekend their cancellations extend through december 3rd. united made a similar announcement lasek, saying the max would remain out of their schedule through december 19th. in july southwest announced their cancellations would go through january 2nd. the 737 max was grounded in march following two deadly crashes overseas. people living along the southeast u.s. coast are still not sure what will happen with hurricane dorian. government officials from florida to north carolina are preparing. the category 5 hurricane is the second strongest storm to form in the atlantic ocean since 1950. weather experts say even a small deviation in the forecast could be catastrophic. it was divine intervention of a different kind that helped pope francis when he got stuck in an elevator. a smiling pontiff apologized for arriving late to the crowd gathered for his weekly address in st. peter's square yesterday. the pope explained because of an electrical problem at the vatican, he was stuck in an elevator for 25 minutes. he called for a round of applause for vatican firefighters who came to his aid freeing him. and a shocker at the u.s. open tennis tournament in new york. men's top seed and defending chon nkoviis u

our top story this morning, hurricane dorian is lashing the bahamas. dorian made landfall on grand bahama as a monstrous hurricane category 5 on sunday. florida, georgia, and north carolina are bracing for dorian as it slowly moves west. nikole killion is in jacksonville, florida, where hurricane preparations are under way. >> reporter: preparations were made as dorian batters the bahamas and menaces the u.s. r devastating images out of the bahamas. please keep them in your prayers. they were hit with a hurricane with 185-mile-per-hour winds. >> reporter: the category 5 hurricane is among the most powerful to hit the bahamas in wia als are . generators into the southeastern u.s. >> we expect that much of the eastern seaboard will be
