both called 911 on the day of the violent rampage. ♪ good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. hurricane dorian weakened to a category-three storm overnight with 120 mile-per-hour winds. it's expected to move dangerously close to florida's east coast later on today. more than a million people from florida, georgia, and south carolina have been ordered to evacuate. hurricane watches and warnings remain in effect across parts of those states, and nearly 4,500 members of the national guard are also at the ready in florida. cbs news weather producer david parkinson is tracking dorian's path. >> well, good morning. the storm has not moved. dorian is just stationary. look at it, it's spinning 100 or so miles off the florida coast. the winds now 120 miles per hour, and it is not moving.

it hasn't moved since about 7:00 p.m. last night. a wider look shows you that we need that little area of brown, that trough, to start picking it up. we think that's going to start happening today. we do expect the storm to move to the north, probably be parallel with vero beach by this evening. by tomorrow morning it's parallel with about daytona beach. we've taken the landfall chance out of florida and georgia. it is now the first chance that we have landfall on thursday in south carolina or potentially north carolina. still as a category-two storm. i do want to show that the wind field on this storm has expanded greatly. so it was 100 or so miles yesterday. it's now over 200 miles. tropical storm-force winds. by this afternoon the tropical storm-force winds go through west palm to the space coast. they continue through the evening. that's where the strongest winds have their paths by tomorrow morning. daytona beach, jacksonville, as well, by the afternoon. notice that orange and red disc

where the strongest winds are, they stay offshore straight through the evening on wednesday where you're seeing the winds pick up in the savannah and charleston area. the potential rainfall, again, staying mostly off shore. there's a whole lot of it. it doesn't take a lot of a wobble on the storm. we still don't have any movement. that is the latest on this storm. we'll continue to track it. we'll have an update on "ctm," as well. david parkinson, cbs news. hurricane dorian is responsible for at least five deaths in the bahamas. in the southeast united states, preparations continue. dorian threatens to drop about a foot of rain from florida to the carolinas. hillary lane is in daytona beach, florida. what kind of damage has dorian done so far? >> reporter: anne-marie, the images out of the bahamas are devastating. it came through with the same power as an ef4 tornado. neighborhoods were completely leveled, homes were floating in the water. we know a little boy drowned. his sister still unaccounted for. in the meantime, hurricane

dorian heads toward the u.s. hurricane dorian kept its devastating grip on the bahamas. >> we are in the midst of an historic tragedy. >> reporter: after many flooding and winds took a heavy toll. >> complete devastation. >> reporter: the storm claimed lives and damaged or destroyed thousands of homes monday. >> our mission and focus now is search, rescue, and recovery. >> reporter: the u.s. coast guard brought injured people to nassau international airport while dorian still raged. the national weather service says the storm is expected to approach the eastern florida coastline later today. >> people need to remain vigilant. >> reporter: millions of people over four southeastern states have been ordered to evacuate. >> get out now while you have time, while there's fuel available. >> reporter: with dorian's path uncertain, some have decided to wait and see. that includes the gash family whose cocoa beach home sits surrounded by water.

>> if the hurricane kind of wobbles and comes closer, then we can go inland a little bit. that's kind of my reassurance of we're keeping an eye on it. >> reporter: meanwhile, a convoy of emergency vehicles drove south through florida just in case dorian doesn't keep its distance. here in daytona beach, conditions are expected to worsen tonight into tomorrow. there is a mandatory evacuation order now in effect for low-lying areas here. live in daytona beach, hillary lane. over to you. >> all right. thank you. ahead on "cbs this morning," more on hurricane dorian. cbs evening news anchor and managing editor norah o'donnell will have full coverage from cocoa beach, florida. and now to the deadly boat fire off southern california. at least 25 people are confirmed dead and nine others are still missing. 39 people were aboard a dive ship early yesterday morning when the fire broke out. five crew members survived after

jumping overboard. the ship was off the santa cruz island. it was on a three-day scuba diving ecursion to the channel islands. omar villafranca report -- john than vigliotti reports from oxnard, california, where the investigation is underway. >> reporter: as the ship burst into flames the accounts heard on this dispatch audio are chilling. >> report of a vessel on fire with 33 people -- correction, 34 people trapped below deck. the vessel fully engulfed now. >> roger, there's no escape hatch for anybody on board. >> reporter: by the time the coast guard and others reached the ship, fire was everywhere. >> i can't breathe. >> reporter: the call went out to every boat nearby. >> if you have any fire-fighting gear on board, hoses, anything, that would be great. >> reporter: it was too late. the ship listed, then sank. the coast guard has blocked off the area where the fire took place. the diving vessel was anchored at about 25 yards off the coast. it is now completely submerged.

the passengers were all experienced scuba divers on a ship called the "conception." authorities say the company operating the boat had an excellent safety record. at 3:00 a.m., most passengers were likely asleep. the bunk area has a stairwell up to the galley, the only ou >> the crew was actually already awake and on the bridge. they jumped off. >> roger, can you get back on board and unlock the boat -- unlock the doors so they can get off? >> reporter: it's unclear if there was time. good samaritans rescued the five surviving crew members but said there was nothing more they could do. they called the scene horrendous. there was also this heartbreaking scene of family members of the passengers waiting for any word. >> right now they're conducting shoreline searches for any available survivors. >> that was jonathan vigliotti reporting. we are learning new details about the moments before a gunman went on a deadly shooting rampage in west texas. the gunman killed seven people saturday as he went on a ten-mile path of carnage from

midland to odessa. tom hanson reports. >> reporter: police in west texas say 36-year-old seth ator was fired from his job just a short time before he went on saturday's shooting spree. >> right after that firing, he called 911, odessa police department's 911, and so did his employer. and basically they were complaining on each other because they had a disagreement over the firing. >> reporter: authorities say ator rambled but did not threaten anyone during the calls. they say the trooper who pulled over ator was unaware of what had happened. >> my understanding is the trooper pulled him over for a traffic violation. they were not actively looking for this particular vehicle. >> reporter: police say he opened fire with an assault-style rifle, then took off leading police on a high-speed chase while randomly shooting at other people including this truck driver. >> just pop, pop, pop, pop. >> reporter: at one point the gunman hijacked a mail van, killing 29-year-old postal worker mary granados.

at least five people have been killed in the bahamas as hurricane dorian continues to stall and batter the country. the category-three storm's center is about 30 miles northeast of freeport, grand bahama island. a life-threatening storm surge of up to 18 feet is expected on grand bahama island. a man is accused of pulling a gun on a popeye's worker, and a security threat cancels a labor day parade. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "usa today" reports a new jersey labor day parade that the governor was supposed to attend was canceled. that's after explosive devices were found near the parade route. governor phil murphy and his wife were scheduled to be at yesterday's parade in south plainfield. a suspicious package with a device was left at a bar about 35 miles away. that led to the home of a 55-year-old man where other devices were found nearby. the home is located near the start of the parade route.

police say the event was canceled out of an abundance of caution. cbs houston affiliate khou reports police say that a man pulled a gun on a popeye's employee after the restaurant ran out of chicken sandwiches. authorities say several people went into the houston restaurant last night, and one man took out a gun and demanded chicken sandwiches. no one was hurt. the incident is now under investigation. and the "washington post" says house democrats are planning to launch an investigation into president trump's alleged role in a scheme to silence two women who claim they had affairs with him. the house judiciary committee i hearings about the payments to ex-"playboy" model karen mcdougal and adult film star stormy daniels. mr. trump's former attorney, michael cohen, pleaded guilty to campaign finance charges connected to the case and is serving three years in prison. attorneys for mr. trump deny the president committed any wrongdoing. still ahead, brexit showdown. prime minister boris johnson

when the fire broke out early yesterday morning. five crew members survived after jumping overard. nine people are still missing. in health news now, more than 200,000 americans each year undergo bariatric surgery. a new study finds the benefits include decreased risks of heart attacks and strokes, as well as healthier blood sugar levels. dr. jon lapook has one patient's story. >> reporter: 57-year-old carolyn auckerman is a bundle of energy. a far cry from a year ago when she hit 310 pounds. >> i got tired easily. i had sleep apnea, diabetes. >> reporter: then she had gastric bypass surgery where doctors shrink the size of the stomach so less food can be absorbed. carolyn has lost 130 pounds, and her type-two diabetes has disappeared. dr. steve nissan and colleagues at the cleveland clinic wanted to know if bariatric surgery could also prevent the
