live from the cbs a area studios, this is kpix 5 news. we have just learned the majority of the victims of the southern california boat fire tragedy wherefrom the bay area. that includes students from a santa cruz school. good afternoon, the search is now suspended after the coast of santa barbara county and just in the last hour, the sheriff gave new details about the victims.>> the majority on the people on the ship appeared to have been from the santa cruz, san jose bay area region that contracted with this company that charted this vessel. >> cbs reporter backs the team coverage from santa barbara.>> reporter: coast guard officials shifted their search for recovery effort for search for victims.>> efforts will be made to stabilize the boat so that divers can safely enter it and

search it and recover additional victims.>> reporter: the 75 foot conception was on a three-day diving trip when a burst into flames as passengers of below deck. >> there are 33 people that can't get off. >> reporter: authorities have recovered 20 victims who became trapped in the ernie vessel. >> there was a stairwell to get down the main entryway up and down and there was an escape hatch and it would appear that both of those were blocked by fire. >> reporter: mourners have placed flowers in 34 counters where the dive but was supposed to return monday evening. this woman who visited the memorial says her sister was one of the crew members who died.>> it is a very difficult situation and i am still in shock but over time, i think i will slowly be able to heal. >> reporter: authorities are interviewing the five crewmembers who escaped to try to figure out what sparked the fire. the crew was slipping on the upper deck where the bridge was

located so they may have managed to survive that way. >> emily turner has continuing coverage at a school where students and parents were on board the boat. >> reporter: pacific collegiate is a school of 500 students so you can imagine everyone knows each other and is a very tight knit community. the news has rocked them. the start of the school day was full of hugs and flowers at pacific collegiate as news slowly spread that two of the students were involved in a deadly southern california boat fire. a parent says the school reached out last night with the news adding, at least two parents were also on board.>> i expect they will be difficult, i think today that young people have a variety of ways to respond to crisis situations. so we are prepared for whatever they bring to school this morning.>> reporter: the school brought in four grief counselors, a small, tightknit group that will need lots of love and support says the head

of the school.>> obviously, any kind of crisis or loss devastate the community because we are a small school a very tight knit. i anticipate that everyone in our school community, students, staff and families will be deeply affected. >> reporter: it is not just the school affected but the entire community of santa cruz. one of the co-owners of the dive shop that charted the but was also on board the ship. >> within the past 15 minutes we have learned the identity of one of the victims, the family of 41-year-old kristy finstad confirming that the veteran diver and former city of santa cruz employee was among the missing and presumed dead. the mayor of santa cruz releasing a statement a short while ago saying the horrific incident is being felt deeply bauer community and we are in disbelief at what has happened and the hearts go out to the families of all of those who

are waiting for news on their loved ones. much more on the story coming up on the channel 5 news at 5 pm and online at kpix.com. a busy street in san jose is back open following it deadly hit and run. driver struck a pedestrian story road near philly bay avenue at 4 am and took off. a van traveling behind the suspect struck the same pedestrian but state and called police. the victim, unfortunately, died thecene and if you have information call police. christmas hill park in gilroy reopen for the first time since a gunman killed three people during the annual garlic festival. it is now back open after being closed for more than a month. as police investigated the mass shooting. an hour and a half ago, the city held a moment of silence and a temporary memorial site to remember the victims. >> this is the first time i've been back in the park since the incident happened. it is a weird feeling, but it good feeling, too. looking at this memorial they're putting up. it is a

great tribute. >> the park has three stones in the ground for the three victims and 17 posts for the 17 injured. the jury in the ghost ship trial has resumed deliberations. two men were charged with manslaughter in the deaths of 36 people inside the warehouse in december 2016. last week, a reconfigured jury met for three days without reaching a verdict. i met the live news desk and we have a major announcement from walmart this morning. the store will no longer sell ammunition for handguns and, is now asking his customers to not carry guns into walmart stores. walmart says it will stop selling handguns altogether in alaska, the only state where is still selling handguns. but walmart will continue to sell hunting rifles like long barrel deer rifles and shotguns

including most ammunition for those guns. in a memo to employees, the ceo says walmart's changes were prompted by the el paso, dayton and odessa mass shootings. we are trying to take constructive steps to reduce the risks that events like this will happen again. he said. walmart represents about 2% of the guns sold in the united states. to the storm watch now, hurricane dorian is downgraded to a category 2 storm but still headed towards the united states coastline after battering the bahamas. we are starting the team coverage now. hurricane dorian is starting to move away from the bahamas after just pummeling the bahamas over the last two days. here is the radar and you can see, dorian, the wind is picking up in florida we are watching the feeder bands pick up around florida. decrease into a category 2 storm, max sustained wind of

110 miles per hour. it was stationary this morning and now starting to move at five miles per hour to the northwest. it will run parallel to the florida coast and georgia coast but so close to the coast that there are tropical storm warnings and hurricane warnings in effect in the florida coast, the east coast of florida through georgia and the carolinas. and likely looking at that hurricane force wind and tropical storm force wind, future cast wind all the way up to northeast coast by later this week. watching a very closely for you. hillary lane looks at the intense damage from dorian.>> reporter: new scenes from the bahamas show the unprecedented damage dorian left behind. >> please pray for us everyone. >> reporter: dori installed as a category 5 storm counting the abaco and grand bahama island with torrential rain and 220 mile-per-hour wind gusts. storm surge swallowed entire

the city and a lot of tourism. he kicks off with an mc, that started a line of speeches especially from the warriors executives. reese heard from the governor and the mayor as well who talked about the connection of the center to san francisco by hiring san franciscans to build the stadium. and how local businesses are involved with food service and bay area residents were asked to participate.>> this chase center will be an incredible asset for san francisco for generations to come. and we are so proud to be here to cut the ribbon today, to make it a reality, to so many people who deserve this incredible space. i will definitely be here when beyonci is performing.>> reporter: so many of us want to be here for that. the late mayor ed lee played for a crowd who was a big-time

supporter of the stadium and of course, the warriors. this venue is a beautiful venue, more than 18,000 seats inside and as i mentioned, on friday, that is the biggest or the first performance here at chase center and is metallica collaborating with the san francisco symphony. quite the mix with their collaborating for 20 years and this is the first time playing together at chase center. it is also the home of the warriors and coming up, we will talk to a warrior superman who doesn't mind the trip along the bay bridge to get to a game. ahead, making the travel industry more sustainable, the new venture from britain's terry.

i am at the chase center, the brand-new home for the golden state warriors and we talked to one super fan whose love for the team runs deep.>> after have stars on my feet. >> reporter: looking at him, lloyd is no doubt a warriors fan.>> his house takes it to a whole new level. >> reporter: when you told your painter you wanted to do it in warriors colors, what did he say?>> he said no problem. just buy me some beers.>> reporter: the house is hard to mix. when you open this gate and walk in? >> it is a dream come true. i have to pinch myself to see if i am still alive. i ain't dreaming?

this is incredible. >> reporter: it caught the eye of steph curry who shot a music audio last here last year. >> at the end of the night i couldn't even grab my arms up. it was like the best thing at my house. god is watching me. >> reporter: he has been a warriors fan for 40 years and made his mom one, too. it started when he was 17 and sold snacks at warriors games. his stutter kept him from talking a lot in high school but, he had to yell to make money.>> get your coca-cola, get your soda, get yourself you had to be real loud.>> reporter: the warriors helped him through hard signs to. he lost his son years ago and when he played in them championships, his life changed when his daughter had a life- threatening infection.
