good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, hurricane dorian regained strength overnight and is headed to the carolinas. dorian is now a category 3 storm. hurricane watches and warnings are posted along the southeast coast, and more than 1 million people have been ordered to evacuate the carolinas. more than a foot of rain could fall on coastal communities there. hilary lane is in atlantic beach, florida. hilary, florida seems to have been spared, but the bahamas are dealing with the aftermath of dorian. >> reporter: anne-marie, the hurricane tore through the bahamas with the power of an ef-4 tornado. neighborhoods were leveled. 24 people are confirmed dead. here in the u.s. attention is

turning toward the carolinas where they're expected to get a direct hit from dorian. the full impact of dorian on the bahamas is becoming clear. >> our response will be day and night until the lives of our people return to some degree of normalcy. >> reporter: the u.n. says some 70,000 people are in need of aid, but reheef is now starting to come in. >> it's incredible. the amount of outreach. >> reporter: tim aylen choked up as he thought about the offers for help. during the storm he and his family left behind a flooded house that's now ruined. >> we're all in the same clothes we escaped this house in, so it's good to get the support. >> reporter: others were not as fortunate. adrian farrington lost his son. he said his 5-year-old boy is still missing. dorian's outer rain band soaked

florida yesterday, but it's now moving up the east coast, taking a more direct aim at the carolinas. >> triple threat of heavy rain, high tides, and storm surge. >> reporter: some charleston, south carolina, residents fled to a storm shelter as dorian moved closer. >> hope for the best, prepare for the worst. i'm preparing for the worst. >> reporter: further north ships at the norfolk, virginia, naval base were ordered out to sea away from dorian's direct destructive path. north carolina has announced the first hurricane-related death. an 85-year-old man was on his ladder preparing for the storm. he fell off and died. anne-marie. >> hilary lane reporting from atlantic beach, florida, hilary, thanks a lot. the center of hurricane dorian will continue to approach south carolina this morning. cbs news weather producein possible land fall. well, good morning.

unfortunately we're back to a category 3 storm with dorian. it has expanded in size. the rain shield from jacksonville all the way up into north carolina. the wind is at 115 miles an hour. the wind is 95 miles south-southeast of charleston as it moves to the north at 7. it will start to move quickly, but not before it makes brush with or landfall with the south carolina coast or north carolina coast. the outer banks by friday morning, and then this thing is out of here. the two main threats we've got to worry about -- or there are three actually. the first, the storm surge between 2 to 4 foot. anywhere in orange from charleston up through wilmington, that's up to 6 feet of storm surge. the high tide is sometime this afternoon around 1:00 or 2:00. this is a look at the winds this morning. charleston seeing hurricane-force winds and tropical-force winds all the way

up into north carolina. by this evening, myrtle beach seeing hurricane-force winds. ut irbankingtingfhere finally, the rain -- the potential for a foot of rain in the charleston area on top of the wind and the rain, that's another threat. we've still got another 24 hours. david parkinson, cbs news. president trump is facing criticism this morning after appearing to use a map showing an altered projukz of hurricane dorian possibly striking alabama. he displayed a map last week showing the map. it appears to be a hand-drawn half circle thal extended over the cone of alabama. earlier this week the president tweeted the hurricane threatened alabama.

the weather casters in alabama quickly refuted that claim. forecasters say it is unlikely dorian would hit alabama. ahead on "cbs this morning," co-host tony dokoupil will be reporting from charleston, south carolina, as that city prepares for hurricane dorian. a california sheriff's deputy narrowly escaped with her life after a suspect she was trying to arrest grabbed her gun and opened fire. the violent encounter was captured on video in san ber narr dino county yesterday. you can see the suspect shooting at the deputy as she tried to get away. laura podesta is in new york. how did all of this get started? >> well, anne-marie, it started as a domestic violence call. a woman called 911 saying she needed help with her son. that son then turned on the deputy. anne-marie, cellphone video of that encounter was posted on video. you can see in it how close this deputy was to losing her life. watching this cellphone video as a san bernardino county sheriff's deputy gets into a

violent struggle with a man in victorville, california. that man starts punching the officer, wrestling her gun away, and begins shooting at her. deputy meagan forsberg was miraculously not struck by any bullets. she runs for her life. other responding deputies arrive and begin opening fire. the 21-year-old suspect was shot and taken to the hospital. as he's being loaded into the ambulance, it appears deputy forsberg walks right past the man who almost killed her. officials say she was not seriously injured. >> it was a violent attack. struck her multiple times. >> investigators say the situation started when deputy forsberg was called to the home by a woman who needed help with her son. it's unclear what provoked the 21-year-old suspect. and we're told the suspect is expected to survive. his injuries are not life-threatening. anne-marie. >> wow. that is unbelievable video.

laura podesta here in new york. thank you so much, laura. >> thanks. new information is emerging this morning about the deadly boat fire off the coast of southern california. 33 bodies have now been recovered. one person remains missing. the victims include high schoolers, a hairdresser, marine biologist, movie special effects designer, and a family of five. authorities say the 34 people were trapped below the deck of the dive boat when the fire broke out on monday. the coast guard said the boat was not required to have fire sprinklers onboard. five crew members including captain managed to escape, and the ntsb is investigating. google has agreed to pay a $175 million fine to settle a lawsuit alleging a violation of children's privacy on youtube. the lawsuit claims google collected personal information of children under the age of 13 without their parents' consent. as part of the settlement, the

company agreed to obtain parental consent. it also said it will limit data collection regardless of their age. the ride-hailing service lyft is facing accusations of failing to protect passengers against sexual assault. a complaint filed by 14 women claims that as early as 2014 lyft was aware drivers were sexually assaulting female passengers. the lawsuit also alleges lyft failed to report rapes and sexual crimes to police. in a statement responding to the suit, lyft said the safety of its passengers is fundamental to the company. it said we screen every single driver and active drivers need to pass another background check every 12 months. well, the woman who was sexually assaulted by stamford student brock turner has been revealed. the victim was only known as emily doe until now. her real name is chanel miller, and she's come forward with her story in a new memoir >> i'm not just a drunk victim

hundreds of firefighters in southern california are battling a large brushfire that's threatening homes. the fire began burning in a hilly area last night just west of marietta. it has spread to nearly 1,000 acres, and it may have been triggered by lightning. people living nearby have been forced to evacuate. schools in the area will be closed this morning as a precaution. there was a new brexit setback for britain's prime minister, and health risks for separated migrant children. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. "usa today" reports watchdog found that migrant children separated from their parents at the border suffered post-traumatic stress disorder. the attorney general of human health services says they also suffer from fear and anxiety. it's the first accounting by the trump administration's zero policy that started last year. hhs says it has taken reasonable steps to address the problems.

britain's "guardian" reports prime minister bourjos johnson failed to get a bid on the country's way out. parliament turned down his attempt to find less obstructive lawmakers in the new election. they also blocked his plan to leave the european union by the end of october even without a brexit deal. johnson is opposed to extending the brexit deadline. and the "hartford courant" says the estranged husband of a missing mother is out on bond after being arrested again in connection with her disappearance. yesterday fotis dulos was arrested for tampering with evidence. according to reports, investigators believe he waited for his estranged wife to return home, killed her, drove her body away in an employee's vehicle and removed potential evidence.

facebook, and bud light loses its corn syrup war. diane king hall is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, diane. >> good morning, anne-marie. the job market is in focus and we'll get two reports, adp's report as well as the jobless claim. lululemon and docusign will release their quarterly report cards. tech companies led stocks higher yesterday. the dow rallied 237 points, the s&p 500 picked up 31 points, and the nasdaq soared 102 points. phone numbers linked to facebook accounts have been found online. according to techcrunch, an exposed server containing 419 million records over several databases was found around the world, including the u.s., the uk, and vietnam. each record has a user's facebook i.d. and phone number listed on the account. techcrunch says anyone could find and access the database because the server was not protected with a password.

facebook says the data has been taken down and there's no word that it has been compromised. there's a nearly $70 billion takeover of aetna. the judge approved a merger last year on the condition that the company sell its medicare drug business in order to secure competition. cvs is in the process of turning itself into a health care company. it plans to expand services such as nutritional counselling and blood pressure screenings in 1,500 stores by the end of 2021. and budweiser has been ordered to stop using the label no corn syrup on its packaging. the ruling bars bud light from running certain tv, billboard, and print ads that suggests that miller lite and coors light contain corn syrup. the chicago-based company sued
