died. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. hurricane dorian weakened overnight, but is still posing a major threat to the carolinas. the category 1 storm is lashing carolina's outer banks with torrential rains and high winds. 15 inches of rain could fall there. hurricane warnings and surges are posted along the coast. forecasters predict dorian could make landfall sometime this morning. katherine johnson is in the thick of it in kill devil hills. that's in north carolina. katherine, what are conditions like there right now? >> reporter: anne-marie, here in the outer banks there's a strict curfew for those who decided to stick it out. they've been instructed to stay in their homes from 8:00 last night all the way until noon today depending on the weather

carolina, exploding transformers and downed power lines left thousands in the dark. the rain here is really starting to pick up right now as flash flood warnings start to go into effect here in north carolina because it's just hurricane dorian that we have to worry about. it's the storm surge that will follow once the storm moves out

of the way, we're told by officials forecasting, 4 to 7 feet of floodwaters rising by high tide, which should hit around 4:00 p.m. anne-marie? >> all right. katherine johnson in kill devil hills in north carolina. thank you so much, katherine. it's expected to head up the east coast. cbs news weather producer david parkinson is tracking dorian's path. >> good morning, anne-marie. the update on this story is dorian is finally starting to move out of here. you can see the center of the storm so close to cape lookout and really pushing those heavy bands on, but in order to get a land fall, you need the center of the eye to pass over land and we'd may be just shy of that. you see the doppler there. it shows you that the eye wall is on land there. that means there's winds of up to 90 miles an hour there. northeast quadrant means you could be seeing todays.

we have a watch in the yellow shaded area. that's until 7:00 a.m. for the potential, we saw how devastating it was. flash flood warnings everywhere in red. flash flood watches everywhere in green. there's a lot of rain. that's why. you see a foot of rain over wilmington, nearly a foot over charleston and myrtle beach as well. there's additional rain until today. that's why we have the flash flood watches and washings. it's 590-mile-an-hour storm. it's a huge improvement and just outside of cape lookout. that's the last time on this cone you're going to be seeing this cone. friday at 8:00 a.m. 's just southwest of hatteras, and look at that. it's gone off the cone, and dorian goes in the history books as a devastating storm but it's assaulting the u.s. no longer. david parkinson, cbs news. ahead makes landfall.

more than a dozen wildfires are burning across north carolina this morning. the red bank fire and the tenaha fire, in murrieta, 60 miles southeast of los angeles. winds are expected to pick up today and fuel those flames. some 800 firefighters are battling the flames and there are also water-dropping helicopters. so far it's burned 2,000 acres and is only 10% contained. robert mugabe, the former leader who was forced to resign has died. he led zimbabwe to independence. he blames problems on

international sanctions and once said he wanted to rule for life. no information on his death, but mugabe was 95 years old. federal investigators have revealed the cause a possible ce fire that destroyed a boat killing 34 people. kris van cleave reports. >> reporter: investigators tell cbs news they increasingly believe the fire started on the ship's second level known as the galley, trapping 34 people below deck, their only two exits blocked by fire including a small escape hatch above a bunk bed. >> did it surprise you how small that second exit was? >> it didn't it surprised me how small it was, how hard it was to access. >> reporter: they described harrowing moments after the fire started. >> they tried to enter through the double doors and couldn't get in because of the flames. they tried to access the galley from the front through the

windows, but the windows wouldn't open. and at some point because of heat and smoke and fire, they had jumps from the boat. >> reporter: among the possible causes the ntsb is considering, did lithium batteries used for underwater cameras overheat. they have to raise the boat, and the efforts to recover it are being hampered by increasingly strong winds over the next few days. and the ntsb is trying to determine of the night crewmen who the watchman was and what they may have seen. new information is emerging into the missing connecticut mom jennifer dulos. yesterday the girlfriend turned

herself in. draw co-nas and jennifer's husband fotis dulos were arrested over the summer. jennifer dulos disappeared in may. an american woman has been arrested in the philippines for allegedly attempting to take a baby out of the country. jennifer talbot is from ohio. investigators say that she got through an airport immigration counter on wednesday before being intercepted at a boarding gate by airline personnel. >> no, they did not see the baby because she was burying the baby in a sling bag. >> the baby is only 6 days old. authorities say talbot gave an affidavit consenting to travel with the baby. coming up, an airline pilot

he's accused of disabling a navigation system on a bahamas-bound flight with 150 people in july. it was scheduled to depart from orlando airport. the tampering caused an error alert as the pilots powered up on the runway. as a result, the flight was aborted. no one was injured. according to a criminal complaint, the veteran employee was unhappy over stalled union negotiations. the "san francisco chronicle" says the jury in the ghost ship trial acquitted one and was hung on derick almena. it came after almost three years after the deadliest fire in oakland's history ripped through a warehouse killing 36 people. the fire happened during a large party in a warehouse called the ghost ship which was illegally converted into a space for artists to live and work. two days after the inferno, harris who co-ran the building with almena described how

30, but that number is expected to rise dramatically. according to one early estimate, the damage in the bahamas could cost up to $7 billion. on the "cbs moneywatch" now, two drugstore chains want customers to leave firearms at home, and facebook wants to play matchmaker. diane king hall is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, diane. >> good morning, anne-marie. all eyes are on the job market this morning with wall street set to release the jobs report at the end of august. on wall street yesterday stocks rallied in the wake of news that the u.s. and china are returning to the bargaining table. the dow soared 372 points, the s&p 500 rose 38 points, and nasdaq jumped 139 points. walmart has asked customers not to openly carry guns in its u.s. stores. this follows the latest mass shooting. kroger has also asked.

even in states where open carry is allowed. walmart plans to halt the sale of some ammunition and pulled out of the handgun category entirely. meantime facebook has announced a new platform for dating. the new service will be called facebook dating and can be accessed in the facebook app, but requires users to create a separate dating profile and links users with potential matches based on locations, preferences, and groups. they'll work with instagram and and offer what they call secret crush. they can compile a list called a crush list. it will match them if the crush list lists them as well. lawsuit claims t-mobile sold used phones as new and put customers on expensive financing plans without their consent. the lawsuit also alleges t-mobile overcharged customer, didn't provide them with legal receipts, anned deceived them over its refund policy.

...that outlastsour craving. learn the signs at autismspeaks.org. our top stories this morning, the eye of hurricane dorian is near the north carolina coastline headed northeast. forecasters expect dorian to produce life-threatening storm surges, dangerous winds, and flash floods. the hurricane is packing winds of 90 miles an hour and is expected to move up the east coast tonight and into the weekend. and evacuation orders remain in place as firefighters battle a wildfire in southern california. the fire in murrieta has grown to more than two square miles. right now it's only about 10% contained. there have been no reports of structure losses though. and there's a major break in the nationwide vaping crisis.

public health officials say some of the marijuana products that recently sickened users contain the same chemical, the type of oil made from vitamin e. at least two deaths are linked to vaping. dean reynolds spoke to a young man who nearly died from it. >> how are you feeling now? >> i'm getting better now that i'm off oxygen, but when i first got here, it was like a baby bear was on my chest. >> reporter: when he got to advocate con dell medical center in libertiville saturday, 18-year-old adam was feverish, vomiting, and gasping for breath. from what doctors know of his case, vaping nearly killed him. his pulmonologist. >> anything in your mind? >> we look for other potential causes, but we haven't been able to find anything else. >> reporter: adam's mother polly drove him to the hospital.
