omar villafranca begins our coverage tonight from nags head, north carolina. >> reporter: on north carolina's outer banks, helicopters lifted people from their waterlogged homes. water, and other supplies to people cut off from the aninland.dorian pounded ocracok. despite a mandatory evacuation order for ocracoke island, an estimated 800 people were still in their homes inside when the category one storm slammed into the tiny barrier island. search-and-rescue teams went door to door, sometimes by boat, to check on residents looking for help. elsewhere in north carolina, dorian damaged parts of the main highway on the outer banks. state officials say it could flke weeks to fix. flooded roads and downed power lines also made getting around a problem.r y.

wind gusts over 70 miles per hour damaged trees and some homes, leaving residents to pick up after the storm. >> my neighbors weren't so lucky. i mean, he's got a tree over his driveway that has to be taken care of. >> reporter: here on the outer banks, targettg back toormal. there's still no swimming allowed, but people are coming back to the beaches. reena. >> ninan: omar, thank you. iall, the humanitarian crisis in the bahamas is growing increasingly dire almost a week after hurricane dorian made landfall. the death toll now stands at 43. it's expected to rise significantly. food, water, and other supplies are rapidly running out. more than 1,000 people evacuated from the caribbean nation arrived on a cruise ship in rtorida today. errol barnett reports on the recovery effort from grand bahama. mo reporter: it was a three-hour wait for fuel this morning at one of the few working gas stations on grand bahama island. >> this is what we've been doing since dorian left the bahamas. >> reporter: cbs news also witnessed long lines outside

freeport b and gcery thst e maclean's tomeorm ofelp. asleeroy werin ldinton asked if he could hitch a ride. his home, he tells us, is barely standing. how long do you think it will take to rebuild? r: a couple of years. >> reporter: a long time. >> yeah. >> reporter: in freetown, we saw emmes demolished. high rock, named for being the highest point on the island, all town services obliterated. hotside this cemetery, a casket lay in the caribbean sun. >> the whole town is wiped out. >> reporter: marcia russell-grant, who evacuated ahead of the storm, is trying to get home. what do you expect to see? >> i expect to see total devastation, but we see some walls of our house still up. so we're hoping that there's something we can salvage. >> reporter: we then came across hiis equinor oil complex, also battered by the hurricane.s the

structures, and on those structures, the domes were completely removed by hurricane dorian, oil all around us, and the smell is pungent. in a statement to cbs news, equinor oil says it is safeguarding the environment and veas not identified any oil on beaches and has not observed leakage of oil from its terminal to the sea." now, a security official here checked our press credentials and said we're free to walk around inside, but that we do so at our own risk. the widespread contamination is evident, and it's just one more aspect of recovery for the bahamian government to address. reena. >> ninan: errol barnett in grand bahama, thank you, errol. new provocations from iran today. a government spokesman revealed that iran can now enrich uranium to near-weapons-grade levels and launch advanced centrifuges. both actions are in violation of the nuclear deal. iran has also reportedly seized another ship in the strait of
