>> steve hartman, on the road in pittsb gh. >> that's the overnight news for this monday. this monday. from the broadcast center in captioning funded by cbs it's monday, september 9th, 2019. this is the "cbs morning news". president trump cancels a secret meeting with leaders of the taliban. why he's now facing criticism on both sides of the aisle. a desperate search for survivors. at least four people are missing after a cargo ship capsizes off the coast of georgia. the reason rescue crews said it as too risky to go inside the vessel. and a marathon match. we'll show you rafael nadal's epic comeback to win the u.s. open men's final. ♪ good morning from the studio

57 newsroom at cbs headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, it's the latest setback in a bid to end america's longest war. president trump abruptly called off peace talks with the taliban and afghan leaders at camp david. mr. trump says the talks w woul have taken place this past weekend but were canceled after a taliban bombing killed an american soldier last week in kabul. laura podesta is here in new york. what is the status of the talks now then? >> reporter: well, at this point it's not clear when negotiations with the taliban might resume. and democrats and republicans say that's a good thing. they don't think leaders of the taliban can come to be trusted to a peace agreement anyway. president trump took to twitter to reveal that senior leaders of the taliban had been invited to camp david along with the president of afghanistan. the summit was aimed at fulfilling one of mr. trump's key campaign promises -- ending the nearly 18-year war against the taliban.

the talks were called off when a u.s. soldier died in a suicide bombing in kabul on thursday. >> the president ultimately made the conclusion that the meetings today wouldn't deliver on the outcome that he's demanding we get for the american people. when he saw that they couldn't deliver on the reduction in violence commitments that they had made said there's no sense in having this meeting. >> this is sort of when trump takes over, things get messed up. >> reporter: democrats assailed the administration's failed peace plan. >> it's another example of the trump administration's foreign policy which is a high wire act that ultimately is focused on trump as a persona but not on the strategy emethodical way of creating peace. >> reporter: criticism came from some republicans, as well. >> you can't trust the taliban. you can't trust al qaeda. when you see an attack that happens to gain leverage you know they're not serious. >> reporter: the taliban claimed the suspension of talks will harm the u.s. most, saying it will damage its reputation and unmask its anti-peace policy to the world even more.

14,000 u.s. military personnel are still stationed in afghanistan. wednesday marks the 18th anniversary of 9/11. the war in afghanistan began a few weeks later. anne-marie? >> laura podesta here in new york. thank you, laura. a desperate search is underway off the coast of georgia this morning. four crew members are missing from a huge freighter that capsized yesterday. kris van kleave reports. be advised, 650-foot ship on its starboard side. >> reporter: the trouble started early sunday morning as the ship was leaving port in brunswick, georgia. a man on a nearby pier spotted it and called 911. >> i'm looking at the deck of it facing me. it's flipped on its right side, appears to be. can hear announcements on the boat but i don't know if they're in the water. >> reporter: the cargo ship, "golden ray," with 23 crew and a pilot on board, started listing north of jacksonville, florida. when help arrived, the ship

carrying 4,200 vehicles was on its sides. >> reported within the ship's hull back at this point. >> reporter: the coast guard says there was a fire on board. 20 members of the crew were quickly rescued. >> smoke and flames began to appear, the situation was too risky to further go inside the vessel to attempt to locate the four individuals who remain missing at this time. >> reporter: the accident closed the port for the search and rescue effort. the captain of the "golden ray" is speaking with the coast guard. they'll need to stabilize the ship to continue the search and rescue operation. the coast guard and national transportation safety board will investigate. kris van kleave, cbs news, los angeles. now to the latest damage from what was hurricane dorian. in the bahamas, the death toll from the storm has risen to at least 44, but government officials warn that number will likely significantly rise as rescue crews continue searching devastated areas. some communities remain isolated by floodwaters. many roads into and out of some

neighborhoods are destroyed. hundreds are lining up for flights or boats off the island. others are trying to come to terms with what they've lost. >> this is the aftermath of everyone's nightmare. even me for myself, i underestimated the storm. >> at least five deaths have been blamed on dorian in the southeastern u.s. and one in puerto rico. ferry service is returning to north carolina's ocracoke island which was hit hard by the storm. 18 tornadoes were reported in north carolina as hurricane dorian hit the coast last week. survivors describe what they witnessed. >> in five minutes yesterday, it was that deep in that living room and still coming up. it got about hip deep. >> forecasters are also watching several other disturbances in the atlantic this morning. right now tropical storm gabrielle is posing no threat to land. forecasters say it's too soon to

tell if another unnamed disturbance will eventually pose any threat. dorian continues to weaken as it moves away from the atlantic coast of canada. over the weekend, dorian slammed three canadian provinces. at the height of the storm, more than 300,000 homes and businesses were without power. some people were encouraged to evacuate. there were no reports of any deaths, though. congress returns from august recess today. lawmakers face a broad array of issues including spending, trade policy, guns, and expanding the border wall. meanwhile, the house judiciary committee could vote as early as wednesday to formalize the impeachment investigation into president trump. the resolution will lay out procedures that will be used in the investigation with the goal of deciding by the end of the year whether to recommend articles of impeachment to the full house. now to campaign 2020 and new developments in our cbs news battleground tracker. new polling of the democratic candidates in 18 states finds a

shuffling in the top tier. senator elizabeth warren now leads former vice president joe biden by 8% points, bernie sanders is third. bide's support has largely held and risen in some places. the movement toward warren is not seen as attrition for biden but of lower tier candidates losing supporters who have gone to warren or in fewer numbers to sanders. mark sfoifd has joined the republican race against president trump. the former south carolina governor and cogressman made the announcement sunday. the 59-year-old has long been an outspoken critic of the president. he joins joe welsh and bill p d pepeld -- bill weld as challengers. coming up on "the morning news," a thrilling u.s. open men's final. rafael nadal proves why he's one of the greatest. and the investigation deepens. search warrants are served in a deadly california boat fire. this is the "cbs morning news." is that net carbs or total?...

[ cheers ] 7-5 -- >> it was a marathon match, but an emotional rafael nadal pulled out a victory at yesterday's u.s. open men's epic final. the number-two seed bested fifth seeded daniil medvedev 7-5, 6-3, 5-7, 4-6, 6-4 in a showdown that lasted almost five hours, a showdown that lasted almost five hours. it was the spaniard's fourth u.s. open win and his 19th grand slam title. he is one shy of roger federer's record of 20. dayton police officers are being honored at the white house today, and the investigation into a deadly california boat fire expands. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstands." the "los angeles times" reports search warrants were served at the southern california company

that owned the scuba diving boat that caught fire last week killing 34 people. yesterday the fbi, the coast guard, and other agencies served the warrants at the santa barbara headquarters of truth aquatics. agents also searched two other boats owned by the company. >> i'm not surprised. i mean, when you have that many people die in an accident, i don't care if it's been certified by the coast guard or not, it's -- you're going to have a thorough investigation. >> law enforcement sources told the "times" that a preliminary instigation suggests serious safety deficiencies aboard the boat. there are also questions about whether the crew was adequately trained. the "wall street journal" reports health officials are urging people to stop vaping following more deaths and hundreds of illnesses. there have been five reported deaths from severe lung injury associated with the use of nicotine or cannabis vaporizers. on friday the centers for disease control and prevention said while the investigation is

land o' frost premium. a slice above. here's a look at the forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ a texas man with a banjo was arrested for damaging this iconic wall street tourist attraction in new york city. police say the suspect, identified as tavon barleck of dallas, used the banjo and smashed it against the charging bull statue saturday. the statue was left with visible scratches and breaks around the bull's right horn. barleck is facing criminal mischief and other charges. on the cbs "money watch" now, san francisco has an electric idea, and a killer clown tops the box office. diane king hall is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, diane.

>> reporter: good morning. on the economic front this week the consumer will be a key focus. we'll get inflation numbers and retail sales data for august on thursday and friday. here on wall street stocks finished mixed on friday. the dow rose 69 points, the s&p added two, while the nasdaq fell 13. san francisco city officials are offering to purchase pg&e's electrical grid in the city for $2.5 billion. the city has been considering a purchase since the utility filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy in january. pg&e faced mounting liability for wildfires sparked by its equipment. it could pave the way for municipal utility. city officials argue that san francisco could provide power that is more affordable and reliable. nearly 100% of british airways flights in the u.k. have been canceled today and tomorrow amid a strike between the airline and the pilots union. the two are at odds over pay and working conditions. thousands of passengers have

been told not to go to airports. further cancelations could happen on wednesday. both british airways and the pilots union have indicated they're willing to start new talks. "it: chapter 2" dominated the weekend box office. [ laughter ] the highly anticipated sequel to the movie based on the stephen king novel brought in roughly $91 million. the lions gate film "angel has fallen" came in second bringing in $6 million. and "good boys" came in third with just over $5 million. and a popular brand of alcoholic seltzer water beverage has confirmed a nationwide shortage. white claw's popular with millennials and gen-z drinkers along with gen-x. it's become a victim of its own success, blaming the shortage on the rising popularity. the seltzer has a low calorie count and sugar. it's working around the clock to boost supply.

new england patriots quarterback tom brady is welcoming embattled star wide receiver at tonio brown to the team with open arms. during last night's patriots game, nbc's al michaels said brown's agent told him that brady told brown that he could move in with him until he gets settled in massachusetts. brown was released by the oakland raiders saturday after a series of incidents including a run-in with the team's general manager. later,ro a the patriots agreed to a deal. brown didn't play for the patriots last night. that didn't seem to make a difference at all. they certainly didn't need him much. the defending super bowl champs easily defeated the pittsburgh steelers 33-3 in the nfl's opening weekend. the 42-year-old brady threw for 341 yards and three touchdowns. in other games, the dallas cowboys beat the new york giants 35-17, as the teams combined for nearly 1,000 yards of offense.
