information released within just the last hour. began, everyone. i'm michelle griego. >> i'm kenny choi. the national transportation safety board just released the preliminary information on the dive boat fire that killed 30 people off the southern california coast. anne makovec is here with the very latest. >> reporter: it is a two-page report released less than an hour ago and it runs down the tragedy from the crew members' perspective since they are the only ones who survived. it describes one waking up to a noise and seeing the fire rise from a compartment below him. he alerted the other four crew above deck. they radioed the coast guard and then tried to access the compartment below where the passengers were sleeping. the report goes on to say unable to use the ladder which was on fire. the crew members jumped down to the main deck, one crew member broke his leg in the process. and tried to access the salon and galley compartment which was fully engulfed by fire and thick smoke. unable to open the window and overwhelmed by smoke. the crew jumped overboard. the report goes on to say that two crew members and the captain then swam to the stern, got back on the boat, but they still couldn't get to the deck

below because it was blocked by fire. so they launched a small emergency boat and picked up the two remaining crew members in the water. we have new video from the site. coast guard officers will be working to stabilize and remove the boat from the water since it sank on labor day. the final body was retrieved last night. no mention of safety lapses. passengers may not have received throat safety briefings. >> thank you. we'll have much more on this story coming up on the kpix 5 news at 5:00 and online, of course, kpix.com. new details today about the shooting death of former nfl defensive back and bay area native terrell roberts. his family says he was killed last night on fascination circle in richmond in his grandmother's backyard.

kpix 5's jackie ward has the latest on the case. >> reporter: police here in richmond tell me that around 4:10 yesterday afternoon, terrell roberts was hit in the chest by a single bullet and it killed him. the suspect is still out there. >> from what we've learned, it was a disturbance in the garage. the shooting occurred in a garage and he stumbled to the backyard. >> reporter: clyde tucker has lived here for 36 years and said he had known roberts since i was little. >> i see him, we have talks d i would, you know, give him encouragement and stuff to keep it straight and everything. so yeah, he was a great kid. >> reporter: another neighbor described him as interesting and nice. he spade he spoke to the grandmother earlier. >> she said, yeah, she knew some of his so-called friends, but she doesn't know who it was and why they would do it to him. she didn't know. >> reporter: roberts was originally from berkeley. he graduated from el cerrito

high school, went on to play football at oregon state university and made it into the nfl playing two seasons for the cincinnati bengals before he was injured and retired. some former teammates expressed their condolences saying: >> reporter: the suspect is described as a 25-year-old to 35-year-old 250-pound bald man with a beard wearing a black shirt when the shooting happened. police are now asking anyone in that neighborhood if they have surveillance video that may help them in their investigation. roberts was 38 years old. in richmond, jackie ward, kpix 5. >> roberts is a twin but police say this is not a case of mistaken identity. police have not identified a motive yet. to the weather right now and a heat advisory for parts of the bay area as we take live

look outside. inland locations like dublin feeling it the most today. meteorologist mary lee is tracking the temperatures this afternoon. mary. >> that's right, kenny. we're watching those temperatures rise well above average for this time of year definitely that summer-like feel as we go through today and for tomorrow. and that is why a heat advisory is in effect today and tomorrow. let's show that you heat advisory in effect today until 7:00 p.m. and then again from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. tomorrow. most the bay area in the 80s and 90s today. it gets hotter for tomorrow. we are talking triple digits for friday because of the strong ridge of high pressure. we have a "spare the air" alert. we'll talk about what to expect as we go through next week.

more coming up. campaign 2020 we are hours away from the next democratic presidential debate. the field of hopefuls continues to narrow. and tonight's debate in texas includes all of the front- runner at once. cbs reporter natalie brand is in houston with a look ahead. >> reporter: good afternoon. this will mark the first debate when all the top tier candidates will take the stage in one night at the same time and also the first debate of the season on a college campus. and that means a key part of the audience tonight will be young adult voters. former vice president joe biden will be center stage tonight highlighting his status as the moderate front-runner sandwiched between two progressives, senators warren and sanders. >> you always go after the leader. so clearly, i expect warren in particular and also bernie sanders to attack biden.

>> reporter: dr. michael adams chair of the political science department at texas southern university says the venue a historically black college presents an opportunity for the candidates. >> the candidates who actually speak to the progressive issues in terms of social justice issues, criminal justice reform, i think it will resonate with this particular audience. >> reporter: these tsu students say they want to hear substance, not just sound bites. >> we heard our parents speak about all the fancy words and we have got then but we want to see actual action. >> reporter: voters will be listening for action plans on two issues that resonate cross- country. but especially hit home here in texas. immigration and gun violence. two mass shootings have shaken the state in recent weeks. >> let's not just graze over gun control. we know that we need it. but let's see, like, how it's going to happen and that should be a first 100 days issue. >> reporter: climate change is also in focus. activists suspended themselves from a bridge shutting down the

dramatic new video of the moment a plane makes an emergency crash-landing in florida. look closely as the plane's wing almost hits an airport employee. look at that! afraid the plane would catch fire, witnesses took quick action grabbing fire extinguishers and getting the two people on board out of the aircraft. the two pilots survived and no one on the ground was hurt. as the u.s. government works to crack down on vaping, san francisco-based juul is going global. the ecigarette maker has entered china via e-commerce sites like alibaba and jd.com. it's an effort to tap into the world's largest market of smokers and as we first reported yesterday at noon, president trump is vowing to ban flavored ecigarettes in the u.s. to deter youth vaping. let's see how stocks are trading during the afternoon session:

as an 8th grader she created a device regarding heat stroke and dehydration. sharon chin introduces us to this week's bay area jefferson award winner. >> work together on this one first. >> reporter: girls attach markers in a battery-operated motor on a cylinder to make a robot. she teaches at sunrise middle school in san jose. the concept sticks with the 7th grader. >> open my eyes for me to be a scientist or, like, to be an inventser. >> reporter: she came up with the idea for the program while volunteering among elementary students who didn't know much at all about engineering. >> really made me feel kind of confused and angry because i was going to a school where i was being taught programming in middle school itself.

>> reporter: the 17-year-old notre dame high school senior founded makers of tomorrow in 2016 to expose underserved students to her passion. >> engineering is so critical to getting future jobs in the silicon valley and future careers. i really wanted to make an impact on these students by introducing them to engineering. >> reporter: she did the research herself and developed her own curriculum. it's no accident that all these activities are hands on. sunrise middle school administrator is impressed. >> i think that's amazing. you know? it takes a long time to come up with lesson plans especially ones that are engaging as this. >> reporter: she and her high school volunteers have taught more than 150 students in about a dozen south bay schools and libraries. the city council grants pay for the materials. the projects from circuitry to coding teach perseverance through trial and error to students like samia. s hruti is a role model. >> she has the brains.
