good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, president trump says he does not want to go to war following the attacks on saudi arabia's oil plant this weekend. mr. trump said it looks like iran is to blame. meanwhile attacks sent oil prices surging. gas prices here at home are expected to jump 10 to 25 cents. laura podesta is here in new york. laura, what is the president saying about all of this? >> well, when asked about it yesterday, the president essentially said not to worry, that they haven't risen very much so far and the u.s. has strategic oil reserves for situations like we're in right now. he said we'll dip into those reserves if necessary. president trump downplayed the saudi oil attack last night in

new mexico. >> but a few years ago they would have been in a panic. today we've got a lot of oil, we've got a lot of gas. >> earlier at the white house, the commander in chief suggested iran is behind last weekend's attack on two saudi arabian oil plants. >> it's certainly looking that way at this moment. >> and while he added that he'd like to avoid military conflict, he left the door open to an armed response. >> it could be met with an attack many, many times larger very easily by our country, but we're going to find out who did it. >> it caused the biggest oil disruption in history, reducing global output by 5%. iranian-backed houthi rebels in yemen claimed responsibility, but iran denied any involvement. saudi arabia says iranian weapons were used and has inv e invited the united nations in to investigate. >> we're very concerned that incidents similar to this may

provoke larger conflict.n cahioa ged caantience e'nder no obligation to defend saudi arabia. >> there's no circumstance right now where war with iran would be a good idea. >> secretary of state mike pompeo is expected to visit saudi arabia soon to discuss the attack, and for those concerned that oil prices are really going to spike in coming days, there is a safety net in place that's been used before. three times in recent history the countries that make up the international energy agency have acted today. that includes the gulf war, the destruction after hurricane katrina, and after a long disruption of oil from libya in 2011. anne-marie? >> all right. laura podesta in new york. thank you, laura. talks between united autoworker and general motors are expected to continue today. yesterday work stopped at more

than factories and warehouses when nearly 50,000 union members went on strike. dean reynolds looks at the issues at stake. >> reporter: striking autoworkers hit the picket lines wondering who to trust, general motors who made over $8 billion in profits last year -- >> do you feel that you're not getting a fair share of those profits? >> i know we're not. otherwise we wouldn't be standing here right now. >> reporter: also their union leadership is under investigation or misuse of benefits. one of their negotiators was arrested last week. >> that has cast a cloud over the negotiations. i think the biggest impact of that is does the rank and file really trust its uaw leadership. >> reporter: gm took the unusual step this weekend of publishing its offer to the union, in effect, going over the heads of the uaw negotiators.

more than $7 billion in investments, creating more than 5,400 new jobs, boosting pay, lump sum bonuses, and improved benefits. now without an agreement, workers are looking at strike pay of just $250 a week, far less than what they've made on the job. >> how long have you worked at gm? >> i've had 34 years at gm. >> it's come to this. >> it's come to this. >> kind of disappointing. >> sure is. >> reporter: while gm may hold the upper hand in this, a strike is not painless. various estimates peg gm losses at $350 million per day until the strike is over. dean reynolds, cbs news, detroit. well, president trump went on the attack against "the new york times" after it published a new allegation of sexual misconduct against supreme court justice brett kavanaugh. over the weekend the "times" ran an excerpt from a new book written by two of its reporters. in it a yale classmate of kavanaugh's said he saw

kavanaugh expose himself to a woman at a college party in the 1980s. the "times" later issued a clarification saying the female student declined to be interviewed, and friends say she does not recall the incident. mr. trump had harsh words for the knapp last night at a rally in new mexico. >> i call for the resignation for everybody involved at "the new york times" in the smear. >> democratic presidential candidates called for his impeachment. democratic senator chris coons said he was aware of the latest allegations against kavanaugh during his confirmation hearings last year and he said he wrote the fbi asking it to investigate. others said they would not support impeaching kavanaugh. the white house is telling

two former aides of the white house not to appear at the house judiciary hearing. they're considering impeaching mr. trump as part of its report. it was written that the justice department advised and mr. trump directed the two aides to defy subpoenas because of constitutional immunity. lawyers for both men said they would follow mr. trump's orders. former trump campaign manager corey lewandowski is expected to attend the hearing. investigators will be on the scene in maine today after a powerful propane explosion leveled a newly constructed building. it happened yesterday after fire crews arrived to look into a gas smell. one firefighter died. at least eight other people were hurt. the blast narrowly missed a school bus that had just picked up kids. don dahler has details. >> there's nothing left of it. >> reporter: cellphone footage taken right after the explosion in farmington, maine, shows

debris falling like snow.ra 'shelosest i can explain it. it was just total devastation. reporter: from the air, the extent of the blast zone is visible. the entire building that housed those with disabilities flattened by a gas explosion. this is what the fa sill looked like before the incident. it was evacuated when a worker smelled gas. the blast occurred moments later. lisa marsten had just been urged to leave by a maintenance man. >> i went behind the shed and tucked because things were flying everywhere. yeah. it was crazy. >> reporter: the town held a procession for captain michael bell, the fireman who was killed, but the toll could have been worse. the blast was felt for miles. fortunately the home was not yet in use. multiple homes in the area were damaged. the state and atf investigations will begin tuesday. but so far it's believed to have been an accident.

confirmed seven deaths. it is investigating 380 confirmed or probable cases of the vaping-related illness in 36 states plus the u.s. virgin islands. there was a big vaping bust in wisconsin. a new sexual misconduct allegations against antonio brown. those are some of the headlines on the "morning news" stand. the "milwaukee journal sentinal" reports two brothers have been charged with operating a counterfeit vacartridge vaping operation. tyler and jacob huffhines are charged with numerous charges including possession of thc with the intent to deliver, maintaining a drug trafficking place, and identity theft. the dep tutelage district attorney called it massive. >> it would have an proximate street value of 2.2 to $2.5 million. this is a very, very large criminal enterprise. >> tens of thousands in cash was found in their family home. police looking on tyler

huffhines' nap chat -- snapchat account saw that he was posting videos showing thousands of illegal thc vaping cartridges and other drugs. spots illustrated reports on new allegations against antonio brown. they learn about a second accusation of sexual misconduct by brown. it allegedly happened in 2017. his lawyer denies the claim. separately the nfl met with britney taylor yesterday at an undisclosed location to interview her. taylor accused the patriots wide receiver antonio brown of rape last week. a suspected serial killer was arrested in palm beach county. arr the chargefiee m-yol rey in behi

her women in day.frone of thelld victims is pleased with the arrest. >> when i found out, i walked outside, i looked in the sky, and i said, we got him, baby, we got him. >> police say they were able to track hayes and retrieve a cigarette he tossed on the ground linking him to the murders. and the "washington post" says transportation secretary elaine chao faces investigations over troubling accusations. the house committee is looking over whether chao misused her position. yesterday the democratic committee sent a letter requesting documents related to the company. the letter alleges chao's father had influence within the united states government and boasted access to president trump on "air force one." still ahead, adventures in space tourism. one company unveils plans for the first world space hotel.

>> good morning, anne-marie. on the earnings front we'll get reports from fedex and recent ipo chewy after the market closes. yesterday was a down day here on wall street. the dow tumbled 142 points. the s&p 500 lost 9 points, and the nasdaq dropped 23 points. president trump says the u.s. has reached an initial trade agreement with japan. in a letter to congress released by the white house mr. trump said he intends to enter into a deal on tariff barriers in the coming weeks. the president also said he will be entering into an exclusive agreement with japan on digital trade. neither requires a congressional vote under the so-called fast-track approval process. meantime the ceo of seaworld entertainment has stepped down after less than a year on the job. yesterday gus antorcha resigned

his position as ceo as well as his position on the board of directors. in a statement he said he still believes in seaworld's mission even though he may have, quote, a difference of approach. he became head of seaworld in february. netflix is paying a lot of money for a show famously described as "about nothing." the company struck a deal with sony pictures for a globalea to netflix paid well above the speculated $500 million. nbcuniversal's streaming service paid to take "the office" away from netflix. netflix also lost "friends" to the upcoming hbo max service. if you want to book a room, how about the world space hotel. it will rotate in space. it's a cruise ship-style hotel that will look like space. the gateway foundation released plans for the von brawn station. the amenities will include restaurants, movie screening, low gravity basketball and rock climbing facilities.

captured this video yesterday. he said it's the second time this year a hot air balloon has crash landed in his neighborhood and he credited the pilot for putting it down in a parking lot, narrowly missing houses. in california, three 14-year-old students have been arrested for allegedly making terrorist threats. police say the students posted a threat of violence against desert hot springs high school on social media. the teenagers were taken into custody sunday night. authorities seized a replica ar-15 assault rifle and a semi-automatic handgun. an investigation is under way. and one of "saturday night live's" recent hires has just been fired. word of shane gillis's addition to the show came just last week but the announcement came with backlash after a clip showed him making comments about chinese people and homosexuals. following his ouster, gillis tweeted i respect the decision they made.

chemical does have a potential cancer risk. marc liverman reports. >> reporter: scientists from yale school of medicine are getting the word out about their research on flavored e-cigarettes. their findings show chemical reactions between the flavor compounds and the liquid in the vaping products. >> it's not the compounds in the products the users are using. it's a chemical reaction happening in the liquid. >> reporter: researchers showed us the custom vaping machine they used to analyze the makeup of many chemical flavors. >> many are known to have chemical agents and toxic effects, but we still have to determine things. >> reporter: researchers say flavors are a big worry because they attract children and teens to start vaping. the trump administration is moving to ban the sale of flavored e-cigarettes, and many states including new york are taking their own steps. adding to concerns, a new study from researchers at duke health,
