plus, the red carpet turned purple for television's big night. we'll tell you the big winners from this year's emmy awards. ♪ good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. president trump is here in new york city this morning for a three-day visit to the united nations. a whistleblower complaint about mr. trump's conversation with the ukrainian president threatens to overshadow the trip. democrats are demanding details of president trump's phone call to the ukrainian leader this summer. laura podesta's here in new york. what exactly is the president saying about this call? >> reporter: well, president trump defended his call to ukraine's president earlier this summer. he called it absolutely perfect, that it was congratulatory and focused on corruption in ukraine. but mr. trump also suggested he discussed vice president biden and biden's son in that call.

democrats frame those actions as an effort to pressure ukraine to dig up damaging material on trump's potential 2020 rival. president trump arrived in new york last night ahead of the united nations general assembly. the u.n. held its first youth climate summit this weekend after millions marched around the world. >> we showed that we are united and that we young people are unstoppable. >> reporter: president trump will not attend today's session on climate change. instead he's speaking at a meeting on religious persecution. >> it was a perfect call. >> reporter: his focus yesterday was on ukraine. while leaving the white house, the president seemed to confirm that he did discuss former vice president joe biden and his son hunter during a phone call with ukraine's president in july. >> the conversation i had was largely congratulatory, was largely the fact that we don't want our people like vice president biden and his son

creating to the corruption already in the ukraine. >> reporter: the conversation is reportedly the basis of a whistleblower complaint against president trump. according to the "wall street journal," mr. trump pressured the ukrainian president eight times to investigate hunter biden, who worked for a ukrainian gas company during the obama administration. >> that was not pressure. i -- i know when i give pressure. >> reporter: ukrainians' foreign minister over the weekend also denied suggestions his nation's leader was pressured. >> trump's doing this because he knows i'll beat him like a drum. >> reporter: biden and other democrats want the white house to release the transcript of the phone call. and president trump says he's thinking of releasing that transcript. the white house has so far blocked congress' ability to see the whistleblower's complaint. anne-marie? >> so if the president doesn't lease the transcript, are there any other options such as

something that would let the public? >> the director of national intelligence could share details but he hasn't, citing presidential privilege. now he's feeling the heat because speaker nancy pelosi said unless maguire provides the to congress he and other officials will be entering a, quote, grave new chapter of lawlessness. pelosi has always expressed restraint regarding impeaching the president, but she made it sound like if this wasn't handed over that restraint may be over. anne-marie? >> pretty strong words. laura podesta in new york. thank you, laura. a new poll of likely democratic voters in the iowa caucuses shows a change in the ranks. the "des moines register"/cnn poll shows elizabeth warren leading by two points. experts say her slow and steady rise is the result of her ground game. she's also the best-liked candidate in the field. bernie sanders is a distant third followed by pete buttigieg and kamala harris. one in five caucus-goers are set on a first choice candidate,

while 63% could support someone else. the iowa caucus will take place in february. and now to escalating tensions in the middle east. iran's president has called on western nations to stay away from the persian gulf. at the same time, the debate continues over who's responsible for an attack on oil facilities in saudi arabia. ian lee reports from riyadh. >> reporter: what started out as an attack on two saudi oil facilities, leaving twisted metal and burnt-out fuel tanks, has turned into a war of words. iran's president, hassan rouhani, said the u.s. is creating an arms race in the region. while iran's foreign minister told margaret brennan on "face the nation" it could lead to conflict. >> i'm not confident we can avoid a war. i'm confident that we will not start one. >> reporter: secretary of state mike pompeo shot back. >> iran's foreign minister, as you may have heard, has repeatedly denied any part

played by iran in this attack. will the u.s. release evidence that proves he's lying? >> well, we already have. there's already ample evidence that demonstrates that he's lied. you saw the saudis showing these were iranian systems built -- built and manufactured inside of iran. >> reporter: this week, saudi arabia showed us what they said is the evidence tehran was behind the attack despite the houthi rebels still claiming responsibility. the blast marks on the refineries point north, toward iran. and you can see five of these towers were hit. when you look at the damage that was done, you can see that it's pointing in a northwesternly direction. that's likely where the projectiles came from. saudi officials also claim that pieces of drones and cruise missiles recovered were made in iran. but a team of u.n. investigators is in the country independently inspecting saudi arabia's claims. the united states says the additional troops are taking a defensive posture, but iran continues to warn that any strike against the country will see swift and broad retaliation.

ian lee, cbs news, riyadh. a powerful storm is threatening the caribbean this morning, and it could hit puerto rico and the virgin islands as early as tomorrow. tropical storm karen formed over the weekend. it's packing winds of 40 miles per hour. karen could drop up to six inches of rain on parts of puerto rico. over the weekend the storm drenched the islands of trinidad and tobago causing flash flooding. there were no reports of any deaths, though. embattled wide receiver antonio brown tweeted that he's done with the nfl. in a now-deleted tweet, he criticized the patriots for cutting him. two women are accusing brown of sexual misconduct. brown had recently been signed by the patriots but was released last week in what sources tell cbs news was a mutual decision made by the team's coach and owner. dana jacobson spoke to head coach bill belichick after their game in boston yesterday. >> reporter: i think i'd be remiss if i didn't ask, what was the final straw with antonio brown? >> we're focused on the jets today.

>> thank you, coach. >> brown denied wrong doing and has not been charged. for the first time in history, the primetime emmy awards had no host. but nonetheless, the show did go on for television's biggest night of the year. >> the emmy goes to "game of thrones." [ cheers ] >> the hbo fantasy series took home one of the biggest awards last night -- best drama series. the show's fourth win in the category. the amazon series "fleabag" won four awards including best comedy series and best actress. and "pose" star billy porter was named outstanding lead actor in a drama. porter is the first openly gay ator to win in the category. this year the emmys' red carpet was purple to evoke loyalty because they were honoring tv and hollywood royalty. coming up on the "morning news," mike pence faces backlash for his motorcade.

-- on the morni the "dallas morning news" reports tensions are high as the murder trial of former police officer amber guyger starts today. the 31-year-old white officer is accused of shooting her 26-year-old black neighbor in his dallas apartment last year. lawyers for guyger are expected to argue self-defense. guyger claims she mistook jean's apartment for her own and thought he was a burglar. wfor says an orlando grandmother is demanding answers after her 6-year-old granddaughter was arrested. the grandmother says she received a call last thursday from a school resource officer saying her granddaughter kicked someone and was being charged with battery. the girl was handcuffed and fingerprinted and had her mug shot taken. the grandmother says the girl was acting out in class because of a lack of sleep from a medical condition. >> this is a medical condition. i said, you know, she has a sleep disorder, sleep apnea. he says, well, i have sleep apnea, and i don't behave like that >> the orlando police department says officers are required to get approval from a watch commander before arresting

anyone under 12. the officer assigned to the school reportedly failed to do that. an 8-year-old at the same school was also arrested that day. "the new york times" reports for the first time hong kong police officers disguised themselves as protesters and were seen beating demonstrators during a protest last month. [ screams ] the "times" says the protest was over for hours when a group of men rushed in, tackled people, and began beating them with batons. one man says he suffered a brain hemorrhage. others had fractured bones. officers are accused of using excessive force. police say they used a decoy operation targeting a core group of violent rioters. "the hill" says vice president pence's eight-car motorcade on a michigan island where cars are banned is drawing criticism. on saturday, pence spoke at a republican leadership conference on mackinac island.

the u.k. civil aviation authority said negotiations to secure emergency funding failed. the sudden collapse of the 17 more than 150,000 vacationers stranded abroad. the british government says it will use a small fleet of aircraft to help citizens get home. the decision to cease operations also puts 21,000 jobs at risk worldwide. investigators in indonesia have determined design and oversight lapz lapses played a key role in last year's deadly lion air crash, according to the "wall street journal." investigators also reportedly found multiple pilot errors and maintenance mistakes that caused the boeing 737 jet to go down. 189 people were killed in the crash. the faa grounded boeing 737 max fleet in march following that accident and another deadly accident involving a boeing 737 max aircraft. "downton abbey" was crowned the winner at the box office over the weekend.
