joining us, i'm kenny choi. >> and i'm michelle griego. we have team coverage on the heat and fire danger from the north bay to the south bay today. let's start with meteorologist mary lee. >> reporter: tracking strong offshore winds. mount saint helena, 42 miles an hour wind gusts. diablo, 37. mount tam, 23 miles an hour wind gusts as well as danville. a red flag warning in effect now until 11:00 a.m. tomorrow. the north bay mountains, east bay hills and diablo range due to the strong gusty range. low humidity. that means an extreme fire danger. also, offshore winds. we are heating up. heat advisory today for most of the area. temperatures well above average this time of year soaring into the triple digits inland. and the 24-hour temperature change, we are much warmer compared to yesterday at this

time running anywhere from nine to 18 degrees warmer compared to yesterday. the hot gusty conditions mean a fire risk is rising. kpix5's jackie ward is in santa rosa where crews are getting ready to fight if disaster strikes. >> reporter: if there is a red flag warning in effect in santa rosa, you will see in front of every fire station. the fire department is facing two threats. fire, plus the potential loss of power. this combination led to increased staff and equipment. >> we will try to keep the fire small. >> reporter: standing by is a strike team made up of five engines: there is also a county funded task force consisting of eight pieces of equipment plus a leader. cal fire stocked up with aircrafts, dozers, crews, and engine. >> it's what we do.

compared to october of 2017, we don't want to live through that again. a little work and lost sleep now to prevent something like that is worth it. >> reporter: a possible public safety power shutdown might happen tonight. pg&e has lowered the number of people it will affect. >> i do have generators, extra food. water. i'm set up so if anything should happen, i have my papers ready. >> i'm very concerned to enough may not have been done to make sure that we don't have another large fire like that. >> reporter: temperatures will possibly peak at 103 degrees today. which makes the national weather service consider this a moderate heat risk event. the weather coupled with a potential psps is why the finley community center will open as a cooling center. the red flag warning has been extended until 11:00 tomorrow morning in the north and east

bay hills and isrosa , jackie w kpix5. pg&e will let the santa rosa fire department know if they are going to do a shut-off at 12:30 while the threat of power outages looms in the north bay, it's a reality in the sierra foothills. 20,000 customers have had their power shut off because of the fire risk. some are furious with pg&e for not helping them with generators. it is unclear how long the outages will last because they have to wait for an all clear on the red flag warnings. >> reporter: i'm anne makovec in san jose where the fire department recruits are undergoing a training exercise despite the hot dry conditions today. so they know what to do when a real fire breaks out. there are five scenarios. 21 recruits are going through today designed add close to real life as it gets. the smoking power resembles a high-rise fire. this mock rooftop teaches them how to cut holes to let the

smoke escape. there's a propane fire where an instructor controls the flames in case things go awry. and, two structures that resemble homes where the firefighters are put to a real life test. >> they have to go in and find their victim chest are mannequins. come out in zero disability and disentangle themselvessed to get out. >> reporter: today's high fire danger is only adding to the difficulty. they are taking frequent breaks. this has been in the works six months and the department wasn't about to postpone it. >> if we had a fire in a real structure today, we wouldn't say we will come back tomorrow. we have to fight it today. so they need to practice regardless of how the weather is. >> reporter: the recruited involved in this training session will graduate from the academy on october 4. in san jose, anne makovec, kpix5. and we will have continuing coverage on the fire watch on air and online at kpix.com. we are just learning that two people under the age of 65 have died of the flu in santa clara county. one was an adult, the other was

a child. their flu vaccination status is unknown, but both cases are being investigated. the search is on for a suspect who shot and killed a woman last night in san jose. it happened on monterrey road in san jose near rotor road. when san jose police arrived, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. police have not released any suspect information. this is san jose's 26th homicide since january. a fiery crash shut down both directions of i-80 in vacaville early this morning. just before 6:00. a commercial van carrying gas tanks collided with another vehicle. the van's engine compartment caught fire and sparked fears the tanks could explode. eastbound lanes reopened an hour later and westbound lanes were back open by 8:00 a.m. a fire broke out at a house in south san francisco early this morning. the two-alarm blaze was reported just before 2:00 on randolph avenue. no injuries reported. president trump tweeted out

saying he has authorized the release of the full transcript of his controversial phone call with the president of ukraine tomorrow. cbs news learned the president ordered the state department and the pentagon to withhold hundreds of millions of dollars in military aid to ukraine days ahead of that july phone call. in it, he said that he is said to have pressured the leader of the country to investigate joe biden and his son hunter. >> i said hold it up. let's get other people to pay and everybody called me saying oh please can we play. and there was never any quid pro quo. >> the controversy the fueling renewed democratic calls for impeachment. seven democratic freshmen in the house from swing districts signed an op ed says if he used taxpayer dollars as leverage for his own gain, that would be a threat to all we have sworn to protect. >> if they want to do it, go

new at noon, the california department of public health has issued a public health advisory urging everyone to stop vaping. this as federal prosecutors are conducting a criminal investigation into san francisco-based e-cigarette maker juul. the wall street journal report it is investigation was launched by the u.s. attorney's ofce in northern liforn. the focus on the probe remains unclear. juul is facing several federal and state investigations into its marketing. juul has not d th wh official mmfrom cothe centers of disease control testified on capitol hill today about the vaping epidemic. the cdc reports 530 cases of lung injuries in 38 states connected to vaping. there have been nine confirmed deaths. >> what do we not know so far? probably the most important thing, we don't know the cause.

tomorrow as well. speaking of that high fire danger, we are looking at strong gusty winds that will pick up even more as we head through the overnight hours. wind gusts really pinpointing the north bay. and, the north bay mountains under that red flag warning. still pretty windy wednesday morning and finally things will be tapering off as we go through the rest of your wednesday. if you want some relief from the heat, it is coming. a low pressure system will bring a stronger marine influence for us by the end of the week. sunset at 7:03. triple digit heat, fairfield, concord, liver for, 97 in san jose. 92 oakland. 87 san francisco. another hot day tomorrow. finally, that marine influence kicks in for us and the on shore flow thursday. cooling it down friday. and especially into the weekend. temperatures drop below
