57 newsroom at cbs headquarters here in new york, good to be with you, i'm anne-marie green. lawmakers are moving forward with their impeachment inquiry into president trump. this morning the acting director of national intelligence will testify on capitol hill. for the first time, joseph maguire will speak publicly about a whistleblower complaint that's at the center of the impeachment inquiry. house democrats who read the document say that it's deeply disturbing. laura podesta is here in new york. what are democrats hoping to get out of maguire's testimony? >> reporter: they're hoping maguire will explain why he withheld the complaint from congress for weeks. maguire is not expected to reveal many details about the substance of the complaint. this morning marks the first opportunity for lawmakers to ask acting director of national intelligence joseph maguire about the whistleblower complaint involving president trump. >> what it relates to is

serious, urgent, credible, and we should hear from the whistleblower. >> reporter: members of the house and senate intelligence committees reviewed the complaint last night. >> disturbing. alarming. >> reporter: it includes a phone call between president trump and ukrainian president zelensky that's become the focus of an impeachment inquiry by house democrats. >> the complaint was very well written and certainly provides information for the committee to follow up with other witnesses and documents. >> reporter: a summary of the call reveals the president repeatedly asked zelensky to investigate joe biden and his son, hunter, and suggested he work with u.s. attorney general william barr and mr. trump's personal attorney, rud giuliani. >> you take a look at that call, it was perfect. i didn't do it. there was no quid pro quo. thank you so much. it's a great honor. >> reporter: yesterday the two leaders met on the sidelines of the united nations general assembly. zelensky backed up the president.

history of heavy nicotine vaping. health officials say that the case is among nine identified incidents of vaping-related illnesses in georgia. other possible cases are being reviewed. >> the case is an older gentleman who was a former cigarette smoker. about six years ago had switched over to nicotine vaping. >> the latest death comes as one state begins its toughest crackdown yet on vaping. don dahler reports from massachusetts. >> reporter: as the heat on e-cigarettes increases, juul lab ceo kevin burns announced his immediate resignation. last month on ctm burns gave a blunt message to young users. >> don't vape. don't use juul. don't start using nicotine if you don't have a pre-existing relationship with nicotine. >> he used to smoke in the house whenever he wants -- >> reporter: the company has suspended all advertising and says it will not lobby the trump administration on new vaping laws saying it will fully support and comply with the final policy when effective.

on the first day of a four-month ban, smoke shops across massachusetts had empty shelves. the moratorium of e-cigarette products includes flavored and unflavored containing tobacco and/or marijuana which is legal in massachusetts, and both on line or retail sales. massachusetts governor charlie baker said it was necessary for health officials to get a handle on a spike in vaping-related illnesses. >> this temporary ban will allow state government and medical providers the time they need to understand the dangers and respond accordingly. >> reporter: massachusetts' governor says he can extend the ban beyond the four months and other states are taking similar steps. neighboring rhode island issued a ban for all flavored vaping products, and california is urging its residents to stop vaping altogether. dan daler, cbs news, boston. the entertainment company warner bros. is insisting that its film "joker" does not endorse violence. the announcement comes amid new

warnings over possible threats of mass shootings at film screenings of the "joker." cbs news has learned the fbi is looking into online posts by extremists. warner bros. says it's not the intention of the film or studio to hold the joker character up as a hero. police in aurora, colorado, say "joker" will not be shown at the theater where 12 people died in a mass shooting in 2012. a united nations report issued on an urgent warning on climate change, oceans are warming, sea levels are rising, and polar ice is melting. all of that is accelerating because of increasing carbon dioxide levels. the report warns the harshest consequences may be on low-lying coasts where almost 700 million people live. mireya villarreal has this "eye on earth" report. >> reporter: multimillion dollar homes and yachts line the shores of miami beach. for more than 60 years, this has

this week, cbs news has been investigating the wide-ranging costs of medical care in this country. in a special series called d f esposito from new york. he was hit with more than $650,000 in bills after emergency back surgery. frank's insurance covered some of the cost, but he still owed $220,000. >> you say it, this can't be real. i mean, i don't have to pay this. how -- how am i going to pay this? you sit there and start crying because you don't know what you're going to do. >> after our story aired, esposito is get something relief. oxford united health care will pay the remaining $220,000 claim. the move comes after new york governor andrew cuomo saw our story and told state officials to look into esposito's case. coming up on the morning news now, post-election surprise. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu gets a chance to keep his job. and royal nickname.

a new york state grand jury had subpoenaed the tax records from mr. trump's longtime accountant. a judge delayed enforcement of the subpoena until at least next week. the manhattan district attorney is investigating the trump organization's possible role in buying the silence of two women who claim they had affairs with mr. trump. "the new york times" says israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu has a new chance to keep his job. yesterday israel's president asked netanyahu to form a new government. it came after last week's national election failed to give netanyahu's likud party or the main opposition party enough parliamentary seats to form a majority. netanyahu has 28 days to put together a majority. "the chicago tribune" reports an illinois man seen on video confronting a woman for wearing a t-shirt with a puerto rican flag was found guilty of a hate crime. yesterday a jury convicted timothy tribas for berating and questioning the citizenship of a woman last year in a chicago park.

s&p 500 was up 18, and the nasdaq gained 83 points. president trump has announced the first stage of a new trade agreement with japan. the president commented on the plan at the u.n. general assembly yesterday. he did not go into details. mr. trump says japan will open new markets to approximately $7 billion in u.s. agriculture products. the federal trade commission is suing match group for allegedly using fake love interest ads to trick consumers into paying for a subscription to dating site match.com. the agency says hundreds of thousands of people subscribed to match after getting responses to fake profiles. match says it blocks 96% of bots and fake accounts. mattel has launched new gender-neutral dolls. the new doll line is called creatable world. the dolls have different skin tones, hair, and clothes that allow kids to make it a boy, girl, neither, or both. mattel has been criticized in recent years for its lack of

the museum bought it from a paris art dealer for $4 million in 2017, but it was found to be stolen from egypt six years earlier and smuggled out. investigators say the museum was given fraudulent documents. the met has apologized to egypt. and the minnesota twins are headed to the playoffs as champions of the american league's central division.
